Kyle Boller returns to the Bay Area

kyle_boller_rams_ap_marciojosesanchez2.jpgQuarterback Kyle Boller, who parlayed his stint at Cal-Berkeley into a ride up the draft board and, eventually, a disappointing career as a starting NFL quarterback, has returned to the Bay Area.

The Raiders have announced, via Twitter, that they have signed Boller.

He does not yet appear on the team’s web site, either on the transactions page or on the roster.

Boller spent the 2009 season with the Rams, after spending 2008 on injured reserve with the Ravens.  In all, Boller was in Baltimore for six years.  He started 42 games over five seasons, including all 16 in 2004.

In Oakland, he’ll presumably compete with JaMarcus Russell and Bruce Gradkowski for the starting job.  Boller’s final year in Baltimore was also Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson’s first of two years with the Ravens.

UPDATE:  The move now appears on the transactions page.

On a roster of third-string QBs, Boller is starter material.

  2. BaldingersPinky says: Apr 15, 2010 5:40 PM

What is that play where the QB throws from one knee through the uprights? The Raiders can run it now. Nice!

  3. irishsamurai says: Apr 15, 2010 5:48 PM

wow,and i thought the riders couldnt get any worse at qb than jamarcus bustell, but i guess even the raiders are still not done with making stupid, stupid moves, the only thing he can doo out there is possibly make bustell look better[crazy talk]
i loved how billeck was so amazed at his skill of throwing ball through goal posts on his knees[wow that was some power],but i didnt see it as a precurser to how his career was gonna go,he couldnt stop tripping over his own feet out of the snap,so i guess, yes,it was importannt for him to learn to throw from his knees

  4. SATAN567 says: Apr 15, 2010 5:50 PM

Does this mean they are no longer considering Tim Tebow? What a joke.

  5. nfcbeast says: Apr 15, 2010 5:51 PM

    Boller still plays football?
I was at Sears and i swear he sold me a heated bench.

  6. dogma1 says: Apr 15, 2010 5:51 PM

The Ravens drafted a bust here.

  7. tatum32 says: Apr 15, 2010 5:53 PM

Dumbest move ever. Like Madden said; “If you got five quarterbacks, you have no quarterback”

  8. theuncletodd says: Apr 15, 2010 5:53 PM

and I thought the Browns had QB issues…

  9. Catamount says: Apr 15, 2010 5:54 PM

First pick overall and a first rounder at QB. Sounds like trouble for the AFC.
    But its not.

  10. East Bay Ray says: Apr 15, 2010 5:55 PM

Let’s see. JaMarcus Russell, Kyle Boller, Alex Smith and David Carr. I think the Bay Area has the market cornered on bust former 1st round pick QBs.

  11. Chapnasty2 says: Apr 15, 2010 5:56 PM

What’s sad is that he is an upgrade from what they already have

  12. ampats says: Apr 15, 2010 5:58 PM

    Great Signing !!!
Now the Raiders are set at QB for 2010 season.
With the first pick in the 2011 draft the New England Patriots on a trade from the Oakland Raiders select ——-

  13. Redleg says: Apr 15, 2010 6:04 PM

Would have rather seen JP Losman come back…Has to be a camp arm only with a SLIM possiblity of beating out Charlie Frye for #3 (but I like Frye’s work ethic more than Boller’s athletic “prowess”.

  14. falconfan75 says: Apr 15, 2010 6:06 PM

Already an upgrade over what they had!!!

  15. mikebiggs68 says: Apr 15, 2010 6:08 PM

Geez…AL DAVIS IS A MORON…you mean to tell me KYLE BOLLER gets signed when JASON CAMPBELL is wasting on the Redskins roster? KYLE BOLLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. The Notorious V.I.C. says: Apr 15, 2010 6:08 PM

so the Raiders now have the 2 QBs who are most famous for throwing from their knees during their pro days.
Which is good, because with that Raiders OLine, that will be a useful skill to have.

  17. SterilizeTHenry says: Apr 15, 2010 6:09 PM

It’s not a huge signing, but it could be an indication that Oakland is not looking to draft Clausen at #8, like Mel Kiper is predicting.

  18. RaiderChile says: Apr 15, 2010 6:10 PM

Great, from a possible McNabb signing to Boller, really good move. I can hear the fans in San Deigo, Denver and KC quivering with fear! Pathetic. They are making it easy for Russell to start, and he will start cuz of the money, they’ll lose 4 games in a row and Bruce almost-almighty will get hurt after a 2-2 run and Boller ends up losing the rest of the year. Looking a another great season!

  19. TFBuckFutter says: Apr 15, 2010 6:10 PM

Remember when the Raiders sued the Bucs over their logo?
Now the Bucs can sue the Raiders over their practice of acquiring completely worthless QBs. The Bucs have a trademark on THAT.

  20. falconfan75 says: Apr 15, 2010 6:11 PM

already an upgrade over what was there!!!

No, not really. He’s still worse than Gradkowski and probably very even with Jamarcus.

What’s sad is, Boller can’t throw that far when standing up. I always hear about this story though, like it’s impressive.

  22. spliffbunker says: Apr 15, 2010 6:19 PM

dont forget they also signed JP Losman last year…

  23. fordlaw says: Apr 15, 2010 6:24 PM

Maybe Russell can be released now!!

  24. raiders177 says: Apr 15, 2010 6:28 PM

I for one welcome the addition of a Pro Boller.

  25. rolli1967 says: Apr 15, 2010 6:30 PM

Boller is more expirienced than Gradkowski and is way better than the lazy fat-assed QB JaMarcuss Russel. Look for Boller to start for sure. Maybe they can let Russel play as an offensive lineman if they want to give him something to do other than sit on his lard ass and collect millions. I am a Browns fan, but I do feel sympathy for the torment that Al Davis puts you Raider fans through year after year.

the vietnam vet who beat some guy up on a bus in oakland.

  28. eaglesrule says: Apr 15, 2010 6:32 PM

he could be the starter but i see them using bruce as openign day starter

  29. swervinmervin says: Apr 15, 2010 6:35 PM

He is the best QB on their roster. They should win anywhere betwiin 7 and 9 games if he plays all season. Hell, they won what – 5 or 6 games with a combination of JaThargic Russell and Bruce Gradkowski as starting QBs.

  30. K-Rock says: Apr 15, 2010 6:36 PM

Boller was brought in to help put Jackson’s offense in place. Will make camp run much smoother.

  31. Raider8Earl says: Apr 15, 2010 6:37 PM

A guy who knows what it’s like to be a starter and what it takes. I would like to see Bruce and Kyle competition under center and JaMarcus thrown to the lions.

  32. WhoDey_Man says: Apr 15, 2010 6:40 PM

wow. i didn’t think the old burn victim could do anything to make his team worse. i was wrong.

  33. nowathand says: Apr 15, 2010 6:55 PM

I thought they signed JP Losman to a two-year deal. Is it him and Kyle Boller for the third spot or is Jamarcus getting cut?

  34. The Shape says: Apr 15, 2010 6:58 PM

Morons… Like that’s going to help. Boller won’t even beat out Fyre for the 3rd spot on the roster.

  35. trickbunny says: Apr 15, 2010 6:59 PM

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

  36. thebootguy says: Apr 15, 2010 7:03 PM

  37. czechm8 says: Apr 15, 2010 7:08 PM

As a Ravens ticket holder I was witness to his many disappointments and his few triumphs. He was ruined by Brian Billick who insisted that the Ravens draft him as a junior out of Cal, and then proceeded to start him, totally unprepared, in his rookie season. It was a train wreck made in hell.
But I will say this….he was a total team player for the Ravens. Boller always owned up to his mistakes (and there were many), but he was sure to spread the congrats around when he led the team to victory.
That classy attitude will serve him well in the Land of Al. I wish Kyle all the best in the Blackest Hole of the NFL.

“If you got five quarterbacks, you have no quarterback”
They technically have 4… Losman is a UFA
Oh wait, Russell technically counts as 2, your right.

  43. joetoronto says: Apr 15, 2010 7:28 PM

Hey ampats, how did that deal for Burgess work out for you?
lol, a 3rd and a 4th for a guy who’s not even on the team.

  44. 909RaiderLifer says: Apr 15, 2010 7:35 PM

Camp arm, with a connection to Jackson. Will compete with Frye for #3 QB spot at best.

  45. comment_submission_error says: Apr 15, 2010 7:54 PM

Doesn’t Boller already suffer from PTSD? If he’s going to play in Oakland he’ll need to check his insurance policy.

  46. LovinBlue says: Apr 15, 2010 8:32 PM

It’s either “Cal” or “UC Berkeley.” There’s no such place as “Cal-Berkeley.”

KYLE BOLLER IS NOT GOOD AT FOOTBALL! I am a diehard Ravens fan, and seriously don’t know what you were watching. Intrigity does win football games. Billick did not ruin him, HE IS JUST NOT GOOD AT FOOTBALL!!!

Does not deter from the possibility of drafting Clausen at 8.

  49. SleazyWhipcashPersonalInjuryAttorney says: Apr 15, 2010 10:08 PM

Tebow in the second would be perfect.
He is the antithesis of Russell.
The competition may be the only way to bring out the best in Russell.

  50. mikeorclem says: Apr 15, 2010 10:27 PM

i know kyle is not a good quarterback(as of now) he doesn’t have IT> but he is a great guy, teammate, and person. i totally respect him for trying his guts out to get over the hump. he may still click someday. if he had a better start to his career, backing up chris redman, instead of being thrown in as a starter right off the bat, he may have developed better. i blame billick for this. good luck kyle.

Ummmm, I really don’t see the Raiders & Redskins making too many deals considering BRUCE ALLEN & MIKE SHANAHAN ARE CALLING THE SHOTS IN WASHINGTON!
At least a couple of you were intelligent enough to realize that new Raiders OC Hue Jackson is familiar with Boller from their days in Baltimore. It actually makes a lot of sense to bring in guys you know to help implement changes in a system.
But instead, we get endless comments like the one above and the hilarious “Jafatwalrus Bustsmell” and “Darius Heyward-BUST” jokes.
Ryan Leaf, Dan McGwire, Akili Smith & Jim Druckenmiller: all 1st round picks with less wins & lower career passer ratings than Russell. Alex Smith has a 69.2 career passer rating, a whopping 4 points higher than Russell with 2 extra years of NFL experience. Just some food for thought.
