Vincent Jackson might be next up for deal

Brandon Marshall’s contract proved that off-field problems only matter so much when it comes to money in the NFL. (Even if he’s not the top-paid receiver in football.) Talent pays, no matter how many arrests, domestic disturbances, and suspensions a player has.

Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson has generally kept a low profile in the NFL, but he is facing a suspension by the league after two DUI arrests. That shouldn’t necessarily preclude a big deal this offseason.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego-Union Tribune makes a strong case for a contract Thursday, noting Jackson’s work ethic and explosive ability.

Unlike Marshall, Jackson is a true field-stretching talent. The two receivers are very different, and we suspect general managers would be split as to who they would prefer.

Set to make $3.268 million this year as a restricted free agent, Jackson is underpaid. Acee notes the Chargers haven’t signed one of their core players long-term in two years. It’s time.

The longer the Chargers wait, the more money they will have to pay.
