Adalius Thomas suggests Pats mishandled his arm injury

adalius-thomas-fab4c3c7fc669233_large.jpgVeteran linebacker Adalius Thomas senses that he’s on the outs in New England.  But with a widespread belief entering the offseason that the Patriots would terminate a contract signed three years ago, the Pats have yet to release him.

It could be that the Patriots, who owe the player nothing until the start of the 2010 regular season, are waiting for someone to make a trade offer.  A cynic may wonder whether the Patriots have simply opted to teach Thomas a lesson by squatting on his contract and keeping him from hitting the market in the uncapped year.

A cynic also may believe that Thomas’ decision to talk about his circumstances is aimed at getting the Pats to pull the plug.

In an interview with Shalize Manza Young of the Boston Globe, Thomas talked about his circumstances.  For the first time, he complained about the care that the team provided in the wake of a broken arm that ended his 2008 season prematurely.  Specifically, he says that the team sent him to a massage therapist, not a physical therapist.

“I think that sent a hidden message to me because I don’t think certain
people would get that same treatment,” Thomas said, possibly while coughing twice and muttering “Tom Brady” in between.  “I don’t think you’d send somebody
to rehab their shoulder with a massage therapist, or a knee to a massage
therapist. . . . [T]he person responsible for my physical
therapy was a massage therapist?”

[Editor’s noteSean Connery will take “massage the rapist” for $200.]

Thomas also sounded off on being told last year that his role would be changing because he’s “not a good pass rusher,” and he expressed disagreement with a decision to bench him in Week Six against the Titans based on the perception that he played poorly during a Week Five loss in Denver.

“The thing for me is, I got a game ball Atlanta week [in Week Three],” Thomas said.  “So,
that’s what was so mind-boggling.  You get a game ball two weeks before,
you have a bad game against Denver, and then you get benched the next
game.  That’s really that’s interesting, for a lack of words.  Because I
know a lot of people that had more than one bad game.  It was shocking.
That was like a turn.”

Based on prior comments from Thomas, it seems like he knew that things had changed after Week One, when he emerged confused from a meeting with coach Bill Belichick.

Regardless, it’s a bad situation, and it’s hard to believe that Thomas ever will suit up for the Patriots again.

Thomas is due to earn base salaries of $4.9 million and $5.9 million in the final two years of his contract.

He plans to report for a mandatory minicamp; it’s quite possible that the team will trade or cut him before then, since a season-ending injury would entitle him to the full $4.9 million.

And he couldn’t find his own doctor making 4.9mil a year. Team would still be covered for charges anyways Im sure. Must be something in CBA to allow players to seek their own doc.
Stop being a whiny bit@h Adalius.

I don’t know about the massage therapist vs. physical therapist situation, but the Pats DID set him up with a doctor near his home in FLA rather than require him to rehab in MA. Seems they extended him a courtesy, to which he he responds with dissatisfaction.

    option C:
the Pats know Adalius will end up with the Jets and want to make that more difficult

They should suspend him for four games and then put him on IR.

Could it be that Mr Bill knows that if he releases Thomas, he might bolt to the JETS?

Adalius should talk to Ted Johnson. He will tell him that Belichick always puts the safety of the player above all else.

  11. thesaint257 says: Apr 17, 2010 9:44 AM

problem with Adalius is that in Baltimore, he was worshiped like a star on that defense, and could do what he wanted, but now that he isnt getting the praise he desired he is being a bitch!

Belichick doesn’t want Thomas, but he doesn’t want Ryan and the f-ing Jets to get him either. The hoodied genius, is waiting for the Jets to sign Jason Taylor before releasing Thomas.

I suspect that his old DC Rex Ryan might swoop in to sign him the moment the Pats release him. For New England, the longer they can keep him away from the rival Jets, the better.

    @thesaints257
Your assertion that Thomas was “worshipped like a saint” in Baltimore doesn’t hold water. Thomas was a good role player on a great defense, who had only broken into the starting line-up a year or two before the Ravens let him go (because they had another role player in Jarrett Johnson who could step in at a reasonable price).
If there was any worshipping in was being done in New England, where they assumed they had acquired a star. And maybe Thomas felt a little bit like a star after being chased after by Belichick (at the Pro Bowl, for starters) and paid a ton to be a star.
As for Big Bear’s comment that Thomas should shut up and find his own doc, that’s asinine. As Thomas suggests, would anyone tell Brady to shut up and find his own doctor if the team told him he’s on his own?

Yeah? Then what is your excuse for Thomas’s the 2 years before last? You have selective memory. When you get 35 million, including $20 million in guaranteed money you are EXPECTED to be THE cornerstone of the D (and be a leader, not a whiny malcontent).
By the way, anybody would look good with the D he had around him when he was in BMore.

yeah The patriots have a long history of being dirt bags to thier players. So speak up Adalius, speak up I play they hold him until minicamp I want that hatred to grow and entrench itself the other players. Scott Pioli, the real architect of the patriot almost dynasty, would have cut him by now. Because if youre a bada$$ team you dont make your personnel descisions based on what you think your rival is going to do.
Belli is silly because it doesnt matter if we have 15 olbs the second thomas becomes available by trade or as a fre agent the Jets are going to go get him. No one likes him more than REX and no one makes trades as quickly and efficiantly as tannenbaum.
Chad went to the, Dolphins and won a conference championship..we gave him the freedom to go wherever he wanted.we treated him with respect players see that. We didnt lose because Chad was a dolphin we lost because Farve threw a lot of picks.
Bada$$ teams (and people) are not afraid of the other team beating them, they are afraid of beating themselves….welcome back to the Cleveland Browns years patriot fans….you might as well have mangini..because if belichek and his clones arent winning superbowls they are boring as dirt..haha
ps take a look at all of the Patriots personnel moves since Pioli left for KC…Pats in 3rd this year.

    AD really disappoints me.
The Pats need to turf this jackass, but I am glad they are stringing him along. He deserves it.
I know there is some concern out there that he will go to the Rats, but so what? If we really don’t think he can play then why wouldn’t we want him on their team. After all, AD is the one always Complainian that he is an adult and he doesn’t need motivation from his coach. By that logic he won;t have any extra motivation to play well against the Pats.
In my mind, he is a punch-drunk boxer whose skills have diminished. He is over-paid and the Pats are better off without him.

Here’s a question for PFT nation: Does Bus Cook require that players be douchebags in one way or another before he will represent them? The only one I can think of who is a decent dude is Ken Lucas who may not even be in the NFL anymore.

Thats exactly what he gets. Ray Lewis MADE him. What goes up must come down…. Right after Thomas left the Ravens had that miserable season and he was riding high talking smack about Baltimore and playing for the unbeaten Pats. My how the tide has turned. Ravens have been deep in the playoffs the last two years. Thomas missed out year before last and last year had his ass handed to him by the Ravens.
Shut up and stop burning bridges Thomas. T.O. didnt get you the memo.

  34. Go Pats says: Apr 17, 2010 11:48 AM

  36. caljetsfan says: Apr 17, 2010 12:05 PM

If A.T goes to the Jets, Mr T will get him for a bargin after his release/trade and he wont have to or be expected to do it all. He could be a situational player like their talking with Jason Taylor. The Jets are already stacked, he will just make the pass rush better

  37. Ralphie says: Apr 17, 2010 12:43 PM

madsqgrdn , you’re the biggest front-running Jests fan there is (and there are a shitload of you). After they went 3-0 last year you wouldn’t STFU, then they lost 3 and you disappeared. Then they won a few and you were back talking shit all over again. By the time they were 7-6 you were MIA. Every time “your” Jests get a few wins you become “SuperFan”. When was the last time the Jets won a real fuc*ing thing like a SB? (ha ha). You wouldn’t know. You only take them seriously when they string together a few wins. When they take a dive again next year you’ll disappear. Poseur.
    Your douchebaggery is beyond reproach.

  38. TheWizard says: Apr 17, 2010 12:51 PM

the real architect of the patriot almost dynasty,
Yeah, they “almost” won a 4th Super Bowl.
Instead, they got 3, a 16-0 season, and Team of the Decade honors for the 00′s.
That’ll stack up against any team in any decade.
Hopefully your team can do a little better this year, and you won’t be so acidic. Good luck.

  39. FlyingElvis says: Apr 17, 2010 12:51 PM

I think what these Jester fans are forgetting is that they can only sign a FA for every one they lose. If the Jets sign another FA it will be their last. At that point Thomas will be canned and yes it DOES make a difference.

  40. CKL says: Apr 17, 2010 1:04 PM

    Flying Elvis -
Cuts don’t matter. If AD is cut he can sign anywhere. It’s only UFAs like Taylor who count towards the signing restriction for the final 4 teams.

Adalius is a bitch. Regardless of his motives, his rep as a bitch is going to stick with him. I hope he ends up in a dark place like Oakland though the Jets wouldnt be so bad either – they are complete scum of the earth and have yet to win anything significant since the Namath era.

Adalius Thomas was the backer that missed the most tackles last year, even though he was used sparingly down the stretch and deactivated for two games.

  46. Patsfansince73 says: Apr 19, 2010 7:03 AM

I have posted this before, but it is worth posting again:
Enough of the Thomas bashing already. The real fault with his downfall is B.B. period. The first year with the team he had 82 tackles and 6.5 sacks not to mention the pressure he put on QB’s trying to throw. His second year with the team he was working on just as good numbers (if not better) before breaking his forearm in a November game. In his third year (’09) he wanted to come back and do his job as usual, that is being a pass rushing LB, one of the best the league has ever seen. What does B.B. do with him? Turns him into a stay at home LB instead of letting him be that pass rusher. What did most critics say the team was missing on defense last year?
Yeah, a decent pass rusher. Why didn’t B.B. let the man do the job he knows best. Sorry all you Thomas bashers. This is one of the few things B.B. has done wrong since coming to New England. The fault rests entirely on his shoulders, not that of Thomas.
