FWIW, I’ve always believed some part of his dismissal was due to the timing. Remember Brown county voters were heading to the polls for the referendum on spending hundreds of millions of dollars on Lambeau Field. The referendum passed 53% to 47%. Had the Packers held onto Chmura it’s quite likely that the referendum doesn’t pass and the Lambeau Field renovations either don’t happen or they need to regroup to find the funding.

Mark Chmura and Big Ben have two things in common: They appear to both be guilty of CRIMINAL STUPIDITY. If you don’t want to be accused of sexually abusing young girls, DON’T let your ass be IN a position where you can be accused. In Chmura’s case, if you come across a party where nubile young girls are drinking, you DO NOT go into hot tubs with them in your underwear and drink with them. In fact, you get the hell out of there altogether.
And yes, there WAS and IS a lot of Packer fan disgust with the guy. No way he should be getting a Packer HOF nod. Speaks to T.I.I.C. at this time, in my opinion.
Also, in my opinion, Ben R should get the Pete Rose treatment.

How is this “jarring”? First, this was before the current rules were in place, and second, he was found innocent in a court of law. There is nothing “jarring” about this at all. I would expect even under today’s rules, the result remain the same.

However, he did spend quality time in the bathroom with a 17 year old.
Aquitted or not, that ain’t “completely innocent”. Not by a looooong stretch.

Goodell is better but still has some work to do. We will be happy to offer encouragement to Warden Goodell until the league is felon free .

I’m coming to the opinion that the only way for the Rooneys to salvage this situation is to release Roethlisberger. Guilty or not, he has been tried in the court of public opinion and has become a huge liability for the organization. He cannot be traded (IMO) because no other team wants this level of baggage right now. They are prohibited from suspending him for more than 4 weeks due to the CBA and 4 weeks seems light right now.
So you release him, hope (wink, wink) no one else signs him this year, and resign him at a lower price when the flap dies down after this season.
That is, if that idiot Roethlisberger can keep his belt buckled in the interim.

Mr. Florio,
As you have pointed out previously, the NFL does investigate these things.
1) The emergency room personnel that examined the girl found her hymen to be intact. (This was all on Court TV for America to see).
2) Mr. Chumura’s attorney had a recontruction of the bathroom in question brought into the courtroom to show that the girl’s testimony was incorrect and it was impossible for her discription of events to be true.
3) The accusations were completely false.
Perhaps like the NFL you might want to investigate the matter.
Mark Chmura was completely innocent.
That is why the NFL responded as it did.
Prosecutor violate people like Mark Chumura everyday.
For example the Duke Lacrosse team getting suspended for nothing?
As somebody that alleges to have legal training I would think you would have some interest in these matters.

Hey, things change over time. Hopefully for the better. Women weren’t always allowed to vote. And they used to play football in leather helmets without face masks. Roethlisberger is an immature rapist who can’t pick up women even with $100 bills falling out of his pockets. He would go to trial if only there was a woman strong enough to stand up to him and the sleazy attorneys he’ll hire who would rake some poor young girl over the coals. In prison Rapistberger would undoubtedly partake of all the forced sex he’s been looking for. Then he’d have the opportunity to see how these women feel.

The real diffence is the fact that Mark Chmura never raped this 17 year old girl.
This was simply a case of an overzealous prosecuter who should have never brought charges.
Is Roethlisberger guilty, I really don’t know but he shouldn’t be punished unless there are established facts.

Leonard Little killed a woman, was let back into the NFL and had another DUI arrest and was never suspended. In the Goddell era, he would have recieved a season long suspension.
The only suspension I can remember Tagliaboo(yeah I meant to spell it like that) handing down was to Jamal Lewis and it was only because he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to jail time.
Goddell has a new personal conduct policy and a lot of offenses that were not reprimanded under Tagliaboo will be disciplined under Goddell. Hell Rae Carruth hasnt been banned from football, the only reason he cant play is because a) he’s in prison and b) he sucks.

Come on Florio, report the full story. First and foremost, Chmura maintained he didn’t do it and it went to a jury trial and he was acquitted.
Like or not, the Packers cut his ass before the trial, its not likely that the Steelers will do the same with Rapesagirl (weekly)
Lastly, he was done as a player. He was so bad that the Vikings didn’t even bother signing him, much like they do with other ex Packers who are on the down side of their career.

@Tibor; More than anything else, I think the Leonard Little case got us to this point, although it took a while for public anger over the case to sink in. The activism of that victim’s family and others got the NFL’s attention, and set the stage for the Goodell era. One of the first things Goodell did was put out the “new sheriff in town” memo.
@Wick; what does this have to do with being PC? We’re not discussing anything remotely “political”. This is not about PC, it’s about PR…public relations.
Here’s another scenario where conviction doesn’t matter. Say I’m a local businessman and I get caught with kiddy porn on my computer. Me and my Commodore 64 are loaded into a cop car, but on the way to the station the car is hit by lightning and my hard drive is wiped clean. I do not get booked, I do not get charged. But I am out of business. It’s my word against two cops with singed eyebrows, but I’m out of business just the same.
In this case PC does not mean “Politically Correct”, it means “the Perception of Criminality”.

The main difference with Chmura (and Little?) is that with them, there was only ONE incident. There did not seem to be a consistent pattern of disturbing behavior. At least not that came to light publicly.

You're taking quite a leap there, don't you think? In the scenario you discuss, you leave out the possibility that the hypothetical player is completely innocent. There are girls who accuse rich players of such actions for monetary gain, you know. I'm sure even in this new environment in the NFL, the decision makers would take that into consideration.
