Pacman Jones was arrested six times before he was suspended. Since no one can prove what happened behind that closed door, Ben should sue Goodell, the NFL, and the Rooneys for libel, slander, defamation of character and restriction of trade (you’ll find that in the Sherman Act, Article 1.). A U.S. citizen is protected by the U.S. Constitution and is to be assumed innocent until proven guilty. Anyone who does otherwise is violating Ben’s civil rights. Have you noticed how Goodell and Art Rooney were very careful in their choice of words to avoid slander? Have you wondered why they’re taking 2 weeks to decide disciplinary action? What more can they find out in the next two weeks? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Right? So why wait? They’re hoping things cool down and NFL fans get focused on the draft and not them and Ben. Why? Because they have about two dozen lawyers each trying to figure out how to mete out “punishment” when they can’t prove a damn thing! And yet satisfy vindictive pricks who want blood. And avoid a lawsuit. If Ben plays this out right he’ll own the Pittsburgh Steelers! Schadenfreude. Look it up. Rocksthefurberger rules!

If the NFLPA allows a player to get suspended under the Personal Conduct Policy without so much as probable cause having been established … then they are just stealing money from the players. If they allow the Commissioner to give himself the power to suspend players without first establishing objective standards of conduct, then they may as well close down shop because they are useless.
What stops Goodell from suspending a player for watering his lawn on the wrong day of the week? What stops him from suspending a player for dating Janet Jackson (or Justin Timberlake)?

You’re damn right I’ve been shrill- you have to be when you’re dealing with an army of shrill lunatics whipped up into a moral panic. By the way, I’m flattered that you’re following my posts.
I don’t think that I’ve been particularly harsh towards the accuser. Unlike some misguided people, I’ve never called her a “whore” or a “slut.” I might just seem harsh because I’m not one of the few who’s not automatically and unquestionably buying the idea that the accuser is blameless, truthful, and forthright. She might be truthful, she might not be. I’ve read the documents, and I think find her story to be less than coherent and persuasive.
As for Roethlisberger, I don’t know whether he’s innocent or not. I’ve read through the documents (not just the tidbits posted by people like Florio for whom controversy is money), and I think that it was at worst a drunken misunderstanding. I can understand why the DA didn’t bring charges. Regardless, I think Roethlsiberger’s a total moron for going on these public binge drinking trips and that he needs to clean up his act.
Nevertheless, I’ve been appalled at how 1. so many people are taking the accuser and her posse’s word at face value without looking any further; 2. So many people are ignoring anything that may call the accuser’s story into question; and 3. So many people desperately want to make this a race issue. Thus, I’ve felt compelled to come in and defend him. Media lynchings are wrong- the controversy driven infotainment industry is destroying our country, and this is just one relatively unimportant example of their corrosive ways.

first let me state that i am a huge steelers fan and always have been. but i do think that big ben should be suspended for at least 8 games. i honestly would hate to lose a franchise qb over the fact that the dude has a hard time getting laid. but i do think he should be punished and suspended, 8 games i think is fair and just but he hasn’t been charged or suspended so he might would file a grievance with the nflpa and such. maybe kordell stewart or bubby brister would want to play for 8 games, hell tommy maddox could be servicable lol

A lot of posters have said he’s getting off easy because he’s white. Others have said he’s getting off easy because he’s rich. (I guess that’s playing the wealth card, but that doesn’t seem to bother anybody). I can’t say for sure if either is true, but rich and white never seems to hurt your chances (unless you take a wrong turn and get a flat tire in South Central L.A.).
My post was referring to the way you used the term “white quarterback”, playing on Rush Limbaugh’s infamous “black quarterback” shibacle. The “spokes of my bike” part was an attempt to balance my post with some levity.
I tried to inject a wee bit of humor in order to distance myself from commentors like you.

First of all, I meant to say “I don’t think that players are more out of control NOW, as much as they’re at more risk of being exposed.” People tend to talk about today’s players as if they invented sin and that the guys back in the “golden age” were pure.
The commish HAS to suspend him. Right or wrong, he’s got a perception problem and if he doesn’t do it himself, he’s going to find himself with an even bigger credibility problem. Besides, the teams have shown that if the commish DIDN’T do anything, they’ve glossed over the players’ behavior time and time again. The worst that some guys got from the team was a “Tsk, tsk” and then all was well. Goodell’s heavy-handedness has been a direct result of the owners ignoring the problem (as they did with steroids, greenies and HGH in MLB).
One thing of note that many of you may not understand: the NFL won’t be fining the Steelers as some sort of way of getting their attention for this incident, it goes with a suspension (The Steelers are on the hook for a fine for the suspension that’s coming for Holmes. If Ben avoids a suspension then they’ll end up paying $100K but if he gets up to 4 games, it’ll double it to $200K). When a player is suspended, his team is also fined.
