He is the third journeyman defensive lineman to be signed in the past 7-days, the second with stumpy NT dimensions. They are just filling out their off-season roster so they can get through their mini-camps and training camp.
Larry David says:

What's the big deal about Haynesworth playing in a 3-4? He couldn't be a good nose tackle?
He could be a really effective nose tackle, he doesn't want to play there because he doesn't want to be used to occupy blockers. He wants to build his own stats, to be the star.
He should take a look at what the Cowboy's NT Jay Ratliff can do from the NT position. The new defense Haslett is installing will likely give Haynesworth far more freedom than he experienced last year in Blache's rigid 4-3.

Larry David,
To answer your question the big deal can potentially be a very big deal. One, it keeps him happy, which is important so you don't lose a bunch of money on a whiner. Secondly, he can line up at a left 3-4 end and tie up the right tackle and guard, where most teams tend to run anyway. Haynesworth, when healthy and motivated (and yes I know that is a big if), he is nearly unstoppable. Now consider some blitzing from the outside that would funnel the running game inside and force the QB to step forward into a hard driving D-Line. Truth be told, the Redskins are a year away from fully implementing the strength of a 3-4. But if they are somehow able to trade back and recoup a second round pick where they can draft a pash-rushing OLB, then it could happen sooner than later.

You left out another benefit and maybe the most likely one. This signing could mean that Haynesworth won't have to play NT and can instead play the 3-4 end position in the base defense and move to DT on passing downs.
