Martz says blocking is priority for Olsen

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz reiterated Tuesday that he wants tight end Greg Olsen to focus on his blocking.

Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune reports that Martz said Olsen “needs to get grounded in blocking,” but he added that he doesn’t necessarily agree with those who think Olsen isn’t a good fit for Martz’s offense.

“If there is a player who can’t fit a system, then there is a problem — if he is a good player — with the system,” Martz said. “Our deal is that we will give everybody an opportunity to find who they are and how they will contribute.”

Martz added that he’s “not disappointed in any respect” with what Olsen has done so far in offseason workouts.

  1. tough situation bears fans, olsen is a really good tight end but as a niners fan i went throguh this 2 trs ago, all martz did the offseason was talk about how he can use a tight end, then u get to the game and u just dont see it, theres a reason vernon davis broke out in 09 and not in 08.

  2. Its all one big smokescreen. If Olsen really wanted leave he would’ve been traded by now. Martz and Olsen probably got together and discussed that he’s gonna be part of the offense but he’s just gonna have to block a little bit more. Martz knows that Olsen is too much talent to waste just blocking. Just a prediction but Olsen 2011 Pro Bowler. Maybe?

  3. Typical Bears. Not using your best offensive player to the best of his ability. Good move.
I guess this is what you get when you get down to your 4th or 5th choice for OC.
    Welcome to Lovie’s swan song.

  4. Olsen will be a wasted player. Rather than adapt his strategy to players that are available, Martz the genius is going to force the offense to do it his way. I imagine this a bit disheartening for Olsen. Well, Olsen can concentrate on his blocking and when his contract is up, he’ll be a more complete player and command more money for his next contract.
    GO STEELERS!

  5. That’s what Jon Gruden did to Ricky Dudley. Results were mixed. I’m glad Martz is in Chicago. With any luck he will not only put Lovie Smith in the trivia category, he will also intensify Jay Cutler’s already twitchy personality. One can only hope.

Jump the gun much? Seriously, it’s 5 months from the season and you’re saying “typical Bears?” Olsen is too good to be ignored as a weapon.

It had more to do with Davis’ attitude and immaturity than the scheme.

Trade Olsen to a team that want to use him to his strengths.

    I agree
