Rex Ryan on prime-time heavy schedule: "The league is smart"

NFL_ryan.jpgIn 2009, Jets coach Rex Ryan wasn’t bashful about doing his best to talk big in the hopes of propping up an underdog team.

Now that the Jets are a frontrunner, he’ll be more careful about what he says, right?

Wrong.

Asked during ESPN’s schedule-release special for his thoughts on a slate that features five prime-time games, Ryan said, “I think the league is smart.  They’re not gonna put just an average team on prime time.  They know what’s up.”

Love him or hate him, Ryan and the Jets will be one of the most intriguing teams in 2010.

I guess he doesnt remember the 08 Browns because it was sooooooooooo long ago. 5 prime time games and 12 losses for them that season. The league is real smart and they never put bad teams in primetime….

  4. VoxVagina says: Apr 20, 2010 8:13 PM

The Jets have raised the expectations so high that a bad season would be a huge disappointment. That said, I kind of want it to happen

  5. TFBuckFutter says: Apr 20, 2010 8:14 PM

Oh my God is it going to be fun watching this team flop as badly as they did before teams stopped actually trying to win against them.

Rex is a buffoon. If the Colts hadn’t thrown the game, the Jets wouldn’t have made the playoffs. They caught lightning in a bottle last year, reality returns this year. They will ALWAYS be a redheaded stepchild to the Giants in NYC and NJ. The AFC East will be between the Pats and Dolphins.

The league isn’t smart, Rex Ryan. And neither is your front office.

I can’t hate this guy. At all. He is great for the game, especially for the AFC East. I can however hate Jets fans, that have never even sniffed any sort of sustained success, play in a Stadium named after another team, yet act as if they are the team to beat. Arguably the worst fan base in football, and I live in Philly, so that’s saying something.

  24. akfinfan says: Apr 20, 2010 8:34 PM

  25. Discostu570 says: Apr 20, 2010 8:35 PM

It does feel like tempting fate, but if Ryan doesn’t mind, I don’t mind. Asking him to hide that ego from the fans is to request more of the classic “I have no recollection of that” press conferences that so many other coaches give.
This is who Rex Ryan is, and it’s gotten him this far. This is the coach the players get to know, so I think it’s great that the fans get to know him too.
Nobody would ask him to behave differently if he wasn’t on such a big stage, so asking him to behave differently now is to turn the big stage into a very boring thing to watch.

You are all jealous fools. We did what we did with a rookie QB and a rookie Head Coach. Do you think the Bengals and the Chargers layed down for us in the playoffs? Did the Colts lay down for us in the first half of the Championship game? If we didn’t have injuries in our backfield, we would have been in the Superbowl. Our coach is a motivator who did a phenomenal job in his first year. Our GM is the best in the league.
It’s okay because when you’re jealous — your GREEN! Go Jets!

Rex Ryan is a smart man, he wouldn’t run his mouth for no reason. He knows what his words do to all the haters with their own bad teams who want to see other teams fail with them. All the hate towards our team only gives us something to prove, which after a championship game appearance we should not have to do but will for non-believers anyway, and everyone knows the team with something to prove always tries the hardest. SO PLEASE, Haters of the J! E! T! S! JETS! JETS! JETS!… HATE ON!

I can’t wait for the Jets to go 13-3 this year and everybody can eat what they’ve been saying about them. I don’t sit here hating on your teams. Just cause the Jets are probably better than your team, you hate on ‘em. When did we get worse than the Patriots? I think everybody’s angry cause the only thing worse than a cocky head coach is a cocky head coach who’s right about his squad (when it isn’t yours). The league is smart though. Putting up the Jets during prime time after their big playoff run last season will interest more people when they play anybody than a st louis at san francisco game.

  51. MrHumble says: Apr 20, 2010 10:26 PM

The Jets will be the biggest bust of the 2010 season. They have went the way of the Danny Snyder Skins, signing players with “names” who are on the downside of their careers plus signing players with bigtime baggage…..their lockerroom will implode by mid season. Has everyone forgot that the Bengals and Colts allowed the Jets to make the playoffs last year……and sure, they won a game in San Diego (perennial playoff chokers) but the Jets didn’t derserve the playoffs last year and they won’t make it this year.

Everytime the jests get a sniff, they step on their dicks the next year. Its in their DNA. Its the price they pay for winning the most important game in the modern era of the NFL.

All of you who don’t think that jets will be a good football team, don’t know shit about the game.

  66. stanjam says: Apr 21, 2010 1:21 AM

People do not only hate good teams. While it is true that good teams that are dominant tend to get hated, they also hate teams that show things like over inflated egos and lack of class. The Jets have not shown the first and have the second and third in abundance.
Ryan has somehow managed to surround himself with players that have egos every bit as big as his. This will NOT end well. He has no self discipline, and has no intention on reigning in his players. When things go badly this team will fall on each other like a wolf pack that smells a wounded deer.
This is gonna be great TV entertainment, which is what the NFL is becoming anyways. The Jets will start by making statements that make you think they feel the NFL should just hand them the lombardi. Then they will do okay, and proclaim their dominance over the NFL, MBL, NBA, and WWE. Then they will start losing. They will fall over each other, blaming each other, the coach, and the refs for their losses. Then they will win a game or two, and start proclaiming that they are back and will go all the way, and that no one can stop them. Then they lose against the next good team they face and spiral down into nothing.
However the sound bytes will keep us entertained all season long!

  71. thunderpants14 says: Apr 21, 2010 7:43 AM

There’s at least 84 primetime slots – you take out the Bills, Browns, Rams and Raiders that leaves an average of 3 slots per team.
The schedule makes sense and despite what Rex Ryan thinks, getting handed a couple slots that the Jags or Chiefs didn’t deserve isn’t really that much of a pat on the back from the league. In fact I wish they were locked in for a guaranteed 8 games. Love watching a good trainwreck.
I still can’t get over him accepting his team was out of the playoffs last year. What a dumbass.

  72. oldschool says: Apr 21, 2010 8:14 AM

  73. Empire Jones says: Apr 21, 2010 8:16 AM

I don’t hate the Jets because of their coach, or because the beat my Chargers. I hate them because Rex Ryan is a douche… everyone can see that except for the Jets fans- and that is because they managed to somehow make it to the AFCCC last year. If they’d of missed the playoffs like they “deserved”, nobody would be talking about this jerk or this team.
And if people REALLY think adding Cro, LT, and Taylor to this squad BETTERS them, ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. LMFAO.

  74. KillShot says: Apr 21, 2010 8:26 AM

Say what you want about the Jets backing into the playoffs, but once they got there, they beat two legitimate teams. Many people picked the Chargers as Super Bowl Champions . . plus, in the regular season they lost 5 games by 5 points or less, while having the some of the worst QB play in the league. If Sanchez improves at all and Cromartie can give them anything, they’ll be dangerous.
