On a conference call with reporters (and whatever you call PFT writers) Wednesday, Steelers president Art Rooney II once again did not deny that Ben Roethlisberger was available in a trade.
Instead, he said the team doesn’t discuss trade talk.
And while that’s a logical non-answer, the Steelers would be happy to deny trade talks if there weren’t any trade talks occurring. We know now there have been plenty of conversations.
Rooney’s message on the call was clear. He supports the NFL’s decision to suspend Roethlisberger and called the discipline “appropriate.” He said the decision was Roger Goodell’s to make more than once.
“We recognize the Commisioner’s authority to act in this area. . . . It is a commissioner’s decision, but in this case we had an opportunity to have input in what was going to happen.”
Rooney was on the phone call with Goodell when Roethlisberger was informed of the suspension. Rooney believes that Big Ben’s intent is to “follow the program the commish sets out.”
