Cowboys interested in trade with 49ers for 13th overall pick

With 30 hours to go before the NFL draft begins, trade rumors are heating up. And the latest has the Dallas Cowboys interested in acquiring the 13th overall pick from the San Francisco 49ers.

Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat reports that the Cowboys are interested in moving up to 13 to select defensive back Earl Thomas of Texas.

Most mock drafts have Thomas still available at 13 but gone before the Cowboys pick at 27, so if the Cowboys are enamored with Thomas, moving up to 13 would make sense.

The 49ers could also take Thomas at 13 themselves, although most reports indicate they’re more interested in Florida’s Joe Haden there.

Doubt it. Probably just misinformation to convince the Eagles that they have to move up to the 10-12 range to get Thomas. Seems too convenient that they are trading for the pick right after the ones the Eagles are rumored to be interested in.

  8. Tikkanen says: Apr 21, 2010 1:22 PM

There’s always the chance that Miami takes Earl Thomas at #12. That is less likely now, as the departure of Jason Taylor probably ensures the drafting of an outside linebacker or a hybrid DE/OLB project.

    Won’t happen.

  10. akfinfan says: Apr 21, 2010 1:22 PM

What if Miami picks Thomas at #12? Miami does need a safety. Maybe Dallas should move to #12 in stead of #13…..and Miami can get that 2nd round pick back from trading for Brandon “The Beast” Marshall.

It would take way too much to move up that high. Thomas isnt worth that kind of move. Prediction if Dez Bryant gets past Denver at 11 and drops to 25 to Baltimore, moving up will be considered. If not Cowboys trade down or take an OL.
BTW I believe Florio goes to rotoworld.com and then posts info, seems like they have it a good hour before he posts it.

This move wouldn’t make much sense. According to the trade chart the Cowboys need to give up about 480 points. That’s equal their current 2nd & 3rd round picks.
Why would they give up that much when they can still get Taylor Mays at #27

  16. Henchman #24 says: Apr 21, 2010 1:24 PM

If the OTs are all gone, a trade down would be spectacular for SF. I wouldn’t be upset if they dropped back and grabbed Charles Brown somewhere in the 20’s. They could still potentially get a guy like Iupati, Pouncey, Kyle Wilson, at 17.

  30. OLDCRACKER says: Apr 21, 2010 1:31 PM

Cowboys give up a 5th for Rape-s-burger, and trade Romo to SF to move up! There’s enough trim in Texas that even Big Ben wouldn’t need a police escort to ambush some woman.

I would like this trade if the Niners get draft choices; as stated in the blog entry, the Cowboys second round, #59 overall, and third round, #90 overall, choices. The Niners don’t need Cowboy rejects, they need more good young players to help build a winner.

  33. Philly Cheese says: Apr 21, 2010 1:32 PM

….and with the 12th pick in the 2010 draft, the Miami Dolphins select Earl Thomas, safety, University of Texas. And wait, there’s a little middle finger drawn on the card with a note to the Dallas Cowboys!

  48. pramis123 says: Apr 21, 2010 1:44 PM

Don’t believe that if the Cowboys want to move up that high, they woud not do it with Parcells and the Phins since they (by all reports) want to move back and pick an additional pick or two. Besides, Jerry owes Parcells for that comment he made in the video, so its time to make it right and overpay somewhat for this trade.

  49. ipeefreely says: Apr 21, 2010 1:45 PM

  50. mburger13 says: Apr 21, 2010 1:45 PM

  52. mustbechris says: Apr 21, 2010 1:47 PM

wouldn’t it make more sense for the cowboys to move up to 17? i don’t see seattle, ny giants, or tennessee taking earl thomas. if they moved up to 17, san fran could take joe haden (who would go to seattle at 14 undoubtedly) and dallas could grab thomas before houston could at 20.

  53. Hanktofa says: Apr 21, 2010 1:52 PM

They just had a story talking about how Jones said they would stay put with their 27th pick! Jones can’t help but be Jones!

  54. Huckleberry Joe says: Apr 21, 2010 1:53 PM

With the gaping hole at FS, I wouldn’t overlook the Dolphins taking Earl Thomas with the 12th overall pick. My best guess is they will pick him or Derrick Morgan if he is still available.

  55. JOldewurtel says: Apr 21, 2010 1:55 PM

Dallas would probably have to trade their 2nd and 3rd to move up to #13. Dallas would only be left with 4 picks. #13, then Rd. 4, Rd. 6 and Rd. 7. Dallas desperately needs a safety, though. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this trade happen.

  56. RichMann says: Apr 21, 2010 1:55 PM

I would jump for joy if my beloved Cowboys made this trade as long as they made the 2nd rd pick for next years draft. earl thomas is the ball hawk the boys need for their blitzing defense. instant upgrade over ken hamlin.

  58. FrankyFiveFingers says: Apr 21, 2010 1:59 PM

  60. Jack Acid says: Apr 21, 2010 2:01 PM

The Cowboys are America’s team, however, the Texans are Texas’ team[yes, we Texans fans force-feed entitled Cowboys’ fans this bit of gregarious machismo DAILY]. Let the Longhorn stay pure & Texan, instead of selling his soul to the evil Skeletor that runs the Cowboys. He’ll only end up shooting up a strip club, coked out, or with hundreds of pounds of pot in his trunk in Dallas.
and thanks for the memories, Earl. Hook’Em!

  62. rslenker3 says: Apr 21, 2010 2:04 PM

The Cowboys try to crash the party every year. Not surprised. Bottom line: stories like this are so stupid. No team is actually gonna come out and say who they want to anyone before the draft. It’s just stupid. Some teams go so far as to spew lies about their intents. Stop posting speculative garbage.

  63. barbersabeast says: Apr 21, 2010 2:04 PM

  64. KingOkra says: Apr 21, 2010 2:06 PM

  65. chemicalxv says: Apr 21, 2010 2:07 PM

  67. 49erFaithful says: Apr 21, 2010 2:13 PM

The 49ers need a top OT to solidify the right side of the line. So the deal wouldn’t make sense for the 49ers unless the Top-4 OTs are gone.

    That must suck.
I could give a rats ass what the eagles or redskins or browns or whatever perennial loser you chumps root for. You click on a Cowboys story just to hate? Wow

This means Eagles gotta get in with the dolphins or denver if they are indeed trying to move up. The word is they want safety help, but who really sees them moving into the top 7 or higher for Berry. Thomas is more sensible & rated as high or better.
