Lito shuffles to Minnesota

A day after the Vikings learned that they’ll be facing the Saints and quarterback Drew Brees to open the season, the NFC runners-up beefed up their defensive secondary.

According to a league source, veteran cornerback Lito Sheppard has agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Sheppard visited the Vikings today, after several weeks on the free-agent market.

He immediately solidifies a cornerback depth chart that features an aging Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin, who suffered a torn ACL in the NFC Championship Game.

i like the signing because it came pretty cheap and though leto is not fabulous anymore, he adds quality depth. it allows us to hold off on taking a CB with the number 30 pick which, in my opinion, kinda hints that we are planning on drafting a QB in rd 1. i still like mccoy a lot more then tebow but am really hoping that we don’t spend this pick on either and draft skelton in the 4-5 at QB. in this case i would say our logical first pic is on OL.

  23. Franchise says: Apr 21, 2010 7:32 PM

Lito is a great pickup, especially for the price. No need to worry about drafting (and starting) a rookie while Cedric is out, and it adds depth to a spot they need it.
    Great addition.
Irishgary: Put up or shut up? I’ve got a $1000 the Vikes take the over on your “9-7″ pick. You game? Looking at the schedule, they go at least 11-5 if not better.
mrlelli: Not only do the Vikes play in the Dome, they have 1 cold weather game on the schedule, which funny enough is in Philly, whom Lito will want to destroy. To bad by then he will be #3 on the depth chart.
Saints#12: Your source must be a Packer fan. You honestly think that if the Vikings didnt know Brett was coming back, they wouldnt move on a single FA QB, or even McNabb OR Big Ben? Wake the f*** up!

    “Lito solidifies…”
The only thing he solidifies is where the opposing QB will throw the ball.
The last time Lito wasn’t completely fooled (i.e. left standing by himself with his WR 20 yards away) by a WR double-move or a QB pump-fake was 2006.
At least the vikings fans wont have any parking problems… there will always be room for a few cars between Lito and guy he is covering.

Lito would have been a great sign for the Ravens. A 1-year $2m-ish deal would have given the Ravens a starting CB for the first 6 weeks while Fabian Washington and Ladarius Webb are probably going to be on the PUP list. He would have been a better option than a rookie CB starting, even though Sheppard is now a league average-to-slightly below average CB.
    I don’t understand this Ozzie.

Every time the Vikings sign a guy there’s 30 people on here ripping how it’s a dumb move and makes them a worse team and they’ll never make the playoffs again. Yet all they’ve done is get better every year and continue to make the division their whipping boys. Jealousy is ugly.
He wasn’t signed to a 5 year $40 million contract. It’s a one year rent-a-backup for depth and insurance, and doesn’t hurt anything. Every team needs depth, and he’s as good a place to start as any. Better than gambling that you get a starter in the draft.

  48. Beer Cheese Soup says: Apr 21, 2010 9:21 PM

Good signing. The Vikings secondary was a disaster last year. I still suspect they’ll want to address it in the draft, but for now, Lito;’s about the best stopgap measure on the open market. Not a star, but far better than what they had.

I love the headline. Boz Scaggs! Lito used to be great for the Eagles way bag when but he got burned a lot later on and started to get lazy. He’s fragile and can’t tackle. The Vikings shouldn’t use him in anything more than nickel and dime sets.

  52. Franchise says: Apr 21, 2010 9:41 PM

I think Lito has a chance to make the team, but honestly it will depend on how quickly Griffin rehabs. If he comes back in time for camp, Lito will have a hard time making the team.
    Why?
    Because we have…
    Antoine Winfield – Elite.
    Cedric Griffin – Top tier.
    Benny Sapp – Solid.
    Asher Allen – Solid.
And I’m betting we wind up with another guy in the first 4 rounds of the draft. Where does that leave Sheppard if everyone is healthy?

Year 2 – he got 5td’s. Big Deal – same number as Terrel Owens and James Jones (your bust for a number 2 pick)

There’s nothing to indicate Lito’s ability decreased since his Pro Bowl years. After his injury, he was made obsolete by replacements, and ditto in the Jets.
Now that he’s actually got a spot and a defined role, he will excel.

If you’re going to insult people at least have your facts straight.
The Vikings agreed on a trade with Baltimore, but the Ravens never got thru to the league to verify the deal in time. The Vikings went on to draft the same player at the 9 slot that they would have taken in the 7th – Pro Bowler/All Pro Kevin Williams (just got him cheaper that’s all).
Perhaps you should take a comprehension course to fully understand the meaning of someone else’s posts. Pervy mentions the draft AND FREE AGENTS! Keep posting though and proving how stupid you truly must be!
    But since you asked…
Pro Bowlers – Peterson, K Williams, Rice, Harvin & McKinnie.
Solid starters & contributors (a couple of Pro Bowl considerations) Greenway, Henderson, Edwards, Griffen, Loadholt, Robison Allen, Johnson, Brinkley & Sullivan.
As well as Pro Bowl free agents – Favre, Winfield, Hutchinson, Sharper & P Williams.
Solid free agent starters & contributors – Longwell, Shiancoe, Berrian & Leber.
Say what you will about championships, but this team has undeniable talent and has been slowly building a top level team with a nice blend of veterans and youth. Don’t let your hatred blind you.

Wow…you really don’t know what the F you are talking about do you?
Since Childress has been in the chair, here are the key draft picks:
    2006
Greenway (better than Hawk or Simms chosen in front of him)
    Cedric Griffin
    Ray Edwards
That’s three starters on a top 5 defense
    2007
    Adrian Peterson
    Sidney Rice
    That’s two pro bowl players
    2008
Trade of first rounder and two thirds for Jared Allen
    Tyrell Johnson
    John Sullivan
    That’s two starters
    2009
    Percy Harvin
    Phil Loadholdt
    Two more starters
Now, those are all players starting on a 12-4 team, not like, say, the Lions drafting someone and starting him on a 2-14 team, or the Bears doing the same on a 7-9 team. All in all, 13 of the Vikings starters were drafted by them (Add McKinnie, K. Williams, EJ Henderson to the above names) or signed as a college free agent (Herrera).
Yes, the Vikings have taken advantage of the free agent market…Uh, so? Should they apologize for making use of all the tools available to them? It isn’t my fault that what ever team you root for doesn’t avail themselves to all of the open avenues of talent acquisition.

The exaggerated namecalling that you and your cohorts inevitably resort to is indicative of small brains. All the jerks you consider to be “teammates” on this site were all cut from the same cloth. Ever since I was a kid it seems that people from Minnesota (particularly Viking fans) think their crap doesn’t stink. You all suffer from a tiresome superiority complex, which stems from the defensive posture you are forced to take from being repetitive losers. The (borrowed) definition below sums it up best.
“The term superiority complex refers to an overly high opinion of oneself. It refers to the unrealistic and exaggerated belief that one is better than others. Those exhibiting the superiority complex have a self-image of supremacy. Those with superiority complexes may garner a negative image in those around them, as they are not concerned with the opinions of others about themselves. Those with a superiority complex may not take the time to polish their image, often to the point of flaw. They possess an artificially high self-esteem. Those with a superiority complex may speak as if they are all-knowing and better than others, but ultimately they do not care if others think so or not, and will not care if others tell them so. They simply won’t listen to, and don’t care about, those who disagree. Behaviors related to a superiority complex may include an exaggerated opinion of one’s worth and abilities, unrealistically high expectations in goals and achievements for oneself and others, persistent attempts to correct others (regardless of whether or not they are actually correct), and an overwhelming tendency to discredit others’ opinions.”
Boy, does that hit the nail on the head. Packer fans laugh at idiots like you. They are a better breed of fan because we do not possess the desperation that you must feel….every year. And now you have the King of the Douches as your QB to boot! Long Live The King!

    Ambrose -
If you look at this thread, Irishguy started calling the Vikings fans names, not the other way around.
I guess starting the name calling is indicitive of being “a better breed of fan”. As is calling a franchise icon “the King of the Douches”.
    Stay classy.

    I don’t have a complex.
    I know I’m an a-hole.
I just like ruffiling feathers and especially those of you packer fans.
For you to think that I tie my well being and attitude on a sports team is laughable.
Go back to talking football Dr. Freud. Pyschology is not your forte.
This site is a palce to blow off steam and trash talk, nothing more or less.
I pity people that live vicariously throuhg their favorite teams. It means that they have nothing else of importance, or do not have their priorities straight.
I used to get really worked up and was pissed off for days when my team lost. Then, I grew up.( can’t tell that from my “persona” on here..lol)
Complex? No. Asshole? Yes…and I’m good at it.

  87. MakeLoveToMe says: Apr 22, 2010 4:00 PM

The superiority complex actually comes from having low self esteem and overall disappointment with most things concerning the subject. In this case their Minnesota Vikings. They have to artificially pretend to act tough, make up things, engage in childish name calling when someone disagree’s etc. It does not matter that it is done on the internet. What the internet does is allow true feelings and emotions to be proclaimed without the potentially negative or embarrasing feedback from a live person. This is why they do not act this way in public and use forums such as this to express their true emotions. Anonymously.

    to all PACKER FANS
JERMICHAEL FINLEY has not even had one GOOD COMPLETE season in the NFL at this point.
year 1 he was VERY IMMATURE and not ready for the NFL
Year 2 – he got 5td’s. Big Deal – same number as Terrel Owens and James Jones (your bust for a number 2 pick)
    ————————————-
lol now this is a hilarious statement. He wasn’t even a full time starter in year 2, yet everytime he was in a game, he smoked defenses, including putting up 160 yards on the Vikings. You’ll see how good he really is this upcoming year when he’s a full time starter. He’s a future elite TE in the nfl. Anybody who says otherwise either knows nothing about football or they just hate the packers and need something to bitch about.
