NFL suspends Ben Roethlisberger six games

The National Football League has suspended Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for six games for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy.

Roethlisberger will not be permitted to participate in team activities until he undergoes an evaluation. If he meets with the terms laid out by the league, he will be permitted to participate in training camp and the preseason before sitting out the start of the regular season, and he could have his suspension shortened from six games to four.

“The Personal Conduct Policy makes clear that I may impose discipline ‘even where the conduct does not result in conviction of a crime’ as, for example, where the conduct ‘imposes inherent danger to the safety and well being of another person’,” Commissioner Roger Goodell stated in his letter to Roethlisberger.

“As the District Attorney concluded, the extensive investigatory record shows that you contributed to the irresponsible consumption of alcohol by purchasing (or facilitating the purchase of) alcoholic beverages for underage college students, at least some of whom were likely already intoxicated. There is no question that the excessive consumption of alcohol that evening put the students and yourself at risk. The Personal Conduct Policy also states that discipline is appropriate for conduct that ‘undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.’ By any measure, your conduct satisfies that standard.”

The NFL’s statement on the suspension makes clear that Goodell has closely examined Roethlisberger’s actions in Milledgeville, Georgia. But the statement does not make any mention of a pending civil suit in Nevada by another woman who claims Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her. It is not clear whether that case played into Goodell’s decision.

Goodell told Roethlisberger he will have to undergo a thorough behavioral examination by medical professionals.

“Your conduct raises sufficient concerns that I believe effective intervention now is the best step for your personal and professional welfare,” Goodell wrote in his letter to Roethlisberger.

Goodell also said he believes Roethlisberger is capable of turning his life and his football career around.

“In your six years in the NFL, you have first thrilled and now disappointed a great many people,” Goodell wrote. “I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity to get your life and career back on track.”

Watch out, ladies. All this means is that Roethlisberger has six Saturday nights free.

  14. Weegie Thompson says: Apr 21, 2010 1:53 PM

Hmmmmm…coincidence based on the 1pm slate of Steelers games early on??? Maybe the sched. makers had a tip…regardless I still think a Leftwich or Dixon-led Steelers can beat the Ravens. Mendenhall is going to have to step it up even more this season, along w/ the D and Mike Wallace.

  15. svenhoek says: Apr 21, 2010 1:53 PM

BS! Lets suspend someone for being found innocent in the eyes of the law.
Tom Brady raped me yesterday. Suspend him for six games based on the evidence I just gave. That’s what this amounts to.

  16. It puts the lotion on the skin says: Apr 21, 2010 1:53 PM

That is just a nice way of making it look like a hard core suspension, but lets look at it for what it is. It is a 4 game suspension, because there is no way the Steelers will allow Roethlisburger to not comply. So the last 2 games are simply cosmetic

  17. Igottz5onit says: Apr 21, 2010 1:53 PM

    Well said commissioner.

  18. rea725 says: Apr 21, 2010 1:53 PM

I guess someone had a hardon for Big ben!

  27. CapsLockKey says: Apr 21, 2010 1:54 PM

  32. Scourge says: Apr 21, 2010 1:56 PM

Interesting – Goodell’s statement ONLY refers to supplying minors with alcohol.
Does that mean if Ben DOES get slapped with a Rape charge or loses a civil suit for Rape, that he get’s additional suspension time?

  33. TheKingInYellow says: Apr 21, 2010 1:56 PM

Should have been the whole season.

  34. mike428 says: Apr 21, 2010 1:56 PM

  36. RIP__21 says: Apr 21, 2010 1:56 PM

Ben, why do you feel the way you do?
    Oh, you mean horny?
    Yes
Because I’m a male who produces testosterone.
Why do you feel you’re entitled to have sex with women?
Because I’m a millionaire superstar, and they all want me.
After all that’s happened, do you still feel the same?
    What, horny?
    No, entitled.
Sure, whatever. Just diagnose me as a sex addict already, so I have something to blame for my actions and the NFL can feel charitable for working with me through this tough time in my life.
Sorry – the hour isn’t up.

  78. Klytus says: Apr 21, 2010 2:01 PM

That is a hefty shot. It’s almost like a poison pill in that it makes a trade less likely. I find it difficult to believe that another team would be interested in a quarterback that cannot play until late October. The Steelers and their fans will just have to go on the best they can.
While Ben is going through his existential reawakening he should attempt to meet Ashley Dupree. She’s on the front cover of Playboy. She brought down a governor she would have no problem handling a knucklehead from Ohio. I’m quite serious. This assumes that Ashley would be interested, of course.

I love all the people saying “He’s innocent, no charges” etc. Clearly most of those people don’t know the first thing about the laws in Georgia, where it is exceedingly difficult to prosecute these cases. Put it this way: in most of the other states in the U.S. there would have been more than enough evidence to prove a jury of his guilt. But really, all that is besides the point. Whether he acted illegally or not, his conduct was unbecoming of the higher-than-average standards people in the NFL are expected to follow, the suspension is completely justified.

  81. pramis123 says: Apr 21, 2010 2:02 PM

Inevitable, but way overboard. An NFL player, driving under the influence of alcohol and perhaps other stuff, recently ran over and killed someone. He was arrested and served time in jail. He got (I think) 2 games suspension.
Where does the league go from here? Do they start following guys around to see what they are doing on their own time? I am a Steelers fan since 1957, and I consider the guy a total hillbilly moron, but this amounts to a fine of a bit short of $3 million in missed game checks for a “pattern of behavior” that is never described aside from a single incident. Maybe they do have other information, but this sets a precedent that I am shocked the union has no issue with.
Where do they go with the next guy who gets picked up DUI? Or rocking a loaded firearm at the airport?

  88. DarthMaualuga says: Apr 21, 2010 2:02 PM

As far as the suspension and required treatment —- This could actually be a good thing for Roethlisberger. Just imagine if he gives up the boozy party life, takes 25 pounds of boozy, bloated fat off of his frame (and another 10 off of his head) and instead actually spends his time watching game film and trying to be a better QB instead of relying on his “Just go out and run around until you get WIDE open” nonthinking man’s guide to quarterbacking.
In all honesty if Roethlisberger truly applied himself to being the best QB he can be the Steelers won’t have to win those typical 13-9 shootouts Roethlisberger leads them to a fourth quarter victory in.

Why do people think that not being convicted in court is the same thing as not being guilty of a crime? Just because there isn’t enough evidence to convict a guy of something (like, I don’t know, raping a chick) doesn’t mean he didn’t do it. Isn’t the justice system designed to err on the side of letting the guilty go free rather than convicting the innocent? In this case, Roethlisberger not getting convicted sounds like a case of the guilty going free.

To svenhoek and all the other guys who keep saying things like “Tom Brady raped me yesterday. Suspend him for six games based on the evidence I just gave. That’s what this amounts to.”
Stop and think for a second about the difference. If you can prove that Tom Brady brought you into a bathroom, had one of his buddies block the bathroom so your friends can’t come get you. If on the night everything happened Tom Brady told the cops there was some “sexual contact” and you just bumped your head. Then we’re getting closer to a case.
Bottom line is, if this happened to a normal person without high priced lawyers this would have gone to court. But when Big Ben brings in one of the best and then the girl decides not to press charges all of the sudden this is over. And though Ben would probably win a criminal case which has to prove Beyond a reasonable doubt that the crime happened he would more than likely lose a civil case which is just preponderance of evidence. Why isn’t there a Civil Case yet? Probably because the girl is already cashing her check from Ben. But thats just an assumption.
There is a big difference in what happened that night in Georgia vs. random accusations people will make to get QBs suspsended from games.

You demonstrate your woeful ignorance of the many differences between criminal law and the rules of a private organization for which Pig Ben willingly provides his labor for valuable consideration. The NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers are not the government (or vice versa), and they have zero zip nada to do with each other.
Free clue: Nobody is “found innocent” under criminal law, they’re found to be either “not guilty” or “guilty”.
Rapelisberger’s punishment has nothing to do with the government criminal legal system and everything to do with his employer meting out punishment for demonstrated and repeated misconduct on his part. He is of course perfectly free to refuse to accept the punishment he received. (Of course, his employer would then also be perfectly free to can his ass or ship it off to Oakland for doing so).

It seems Ben is being made an example of here. Now Goodell has set his precedent, let’s see if he hands out punishment consistently.
So, hopefully Ben behaves, serves a net 4 games, and comes back to take the Steelers to the Super Bowl.
If the Steelers trade him, they will lose a portion of my respect for not supporting someone that helped them succeed in past years and who now needs support and help himself. The Rooneys should not buckle under to media and moron pressure.

  178. No-I-In-team says: Apr 21, 2010 2:49 PM

The media witch hunt against BR is why the suspension is 6 games. If this was truly about him providing alcohol to minors then it would have been 2 games max. Goodell’s letter states the following:
“I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you. My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor.”
The DA stated he couldn’t even find ‘Probable Cause’ from their month long investigation. Since Goodell indictes that his review (and the NFL legal team I’m sure) does not arrive at a different conclusion then it must be concluded that, based on FACTS/Not Drunk witness statements that weren’t in the room, BR is not guilty of anything other than providing alcohol to minors (Which he didn’t even pay for – See the troopers statement) and being an idiot. I wouldn’t have had any issue with 2-Game suspension but this sets a dangerous standard for subsequent ‘Accusations’ against NFL players. If someone accuses Drew Brees of something and nothing happens then the Steelers and Ben can and should cry foul.
Plain and simple: Goodell responded to the outcries of the fans, which were directly influenced by a media that was dredging up website hits by publishing one side of the story. It is a shame that this country is so blinded by the press that they’ve lost their own ability to think and reason.

    ***************
If Goodell had of mentioned the sexual assault allegations, he would be setting the NFL up for a massive lawsuit from Roethlisberger for slander and/or defamation of character. Roethlisberger was never charged, much less convicted, with anything to do with the sexual assault of anyone outside the Court of Public Know-Nothings.
BTW: The alleged victim was not a “teenager” – she was 20 years old. Additionally, that makes her a woman up here in Canada and the rest of the progressive thinking world.

  193. BengalsDouche2 says: Apr 21, 2010 3:10 PM

Hey Jonrox you douche, first of all spell his name right. MAUALUGA. Second of all, there was no proof he supplied the alcohol. He didn’t have a drinking binge in the VIP of a club and didn’t have his bodyguards inviting underage college girls into the VIP with him. AND neither girl said anything about Ray doing anything to them sexually or whatever. Ben is a rapist and finally got some kind of discipline for it. Ben was well known at Miami of Ohio for being this way and was also known for it in High School. But in both of those instances he wasn’t discipline b/c of who he was. Now he finally got his and will continue to get it once he’s traded to the Raiders. I love it!!!!!

It’s past time someone acted to save this idiot from himself. And in the long run, if he learns from the experience, he’ll be better off for it.
But I’d prefer this had come from the Steelers because Goodell simply caved to race-baiting. Pacman Jones had three years of arrests, convictions, and guilty pleas, and was involved in two shootings before receiving his first league suspension. Goodell didn’t mention sexual assault because, despite the melodramatic outcries of the uninformed majority, there’s no actual evidence of assault.
Most of the responses so far are typical of team fans annoyed at the mud on their tires and rival fans thrilled at getting a pound of flesh. Despite all the moralizing, no one really seems all that interested in the facts or human beings involved.

He was bar-hopping the entire night with this same girl that accused him; C. he brought this girl with him from bar to bar. this means he was either plying her with drinks or she had access to drinks in his VIP area. @mjh01210 …
The rape statutes in Georgia aren’t anymore friendly to defendants than those of any other state. Instead of making inane proclamations about Georgia law, try reviewing the evidence:
    1. Negative rape kit. Difficult to prosecute a rape with no evidence a rape occurred.
    2. A speck of male DNA so tiny it couldn’t be tested. You only need a miniscule amount of DNA for testing so this had to be one tiny speck.
    3. An accuser who said multiple times she was not raped before saying she was.
    4. An accuser who was out of sight only 10 minutes and no witnesses to events occurring during that time.
    5. Multiple witnesses saying the accuser followed him from bar to bar, SAID she was “down to f–k” as well as wearing the DTF pin, and engaged in two-way sexual conversation with him all evening.
You run that by prosecutors in any state and see how many would have gone to trial with no forensic evidence, no witnesses, and an accuser with so little credibility.

    Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian says the team will not discipline defensive tackle Eric Foster, who faces a sexual assault lawsuit.
A 22-year-old hotel receptionist is suing Foster, claiming that he sexually assaulted her in his room at an Indianapolis hotel before the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 24.
Polian said Wednesday that the team has no reason to discipline Foster because police investigated the incident and prosecutors later decided not to file charges.
He says Foster remains with the team and will participate in its offseason program.

I cna’t help but laugh at you guys who keep coming up with these scenarios about how the commish will use this to just suspend guys after ANY accusation.
Let’s get real here: the commish DIDN’T suspend him just based on an accusation. If it was just another false claim, I don’t think that the commish even bothers talking about this and let’s the Rooneys sweep it under the rug, if they want or suspend them, if they choose. The fact is that he got away with it and most of you know that but many of you won’t admit it in public. Based on all the information that he saw and what reports he got back from the NFL security people who went down there to Georgia, he made the decision to suspend him. Ben has embarrassed the NFL twice but the last one went a lot further than the first, which I beleive to be a bunch of bull on the part of the woman.
If someone goes out and tries to make false claims against the players, you can bet that it will take an investigation in order to get the guy suspended. If it turns out that the claims were false, I don’t think that anything will be done but if they get off because of botched investigaions and there appears to be smoke, you can bet that there will be something coming down. Of course, by the time that happens, the game that YOU want him to be suspended from, will already have been played. Plan ahead next time…:^

    @themag78 …
    Your post is factually inaccurate.
According to multiple witnesses, the sorority sisters followed Ben’s party from bar to bar, pinching him and trying to get his attention. They were buying their own drinks during this period. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the security tape showed they entered the final club some time after Roethlisberger. The club, which was responsible for ascertaining their ages, let them in. The DA said the group included women who were over and under 21. He said Roethlisberger bought rounds for the room, which were sat on the table for whoever wanted them. The women CHOSE to drink them. He said the accuser and Ben were engaged in MUTUAL sexual conduct and conversation all evening and witnesses said she TOLD HIM she was “down to f–k.”
I don’t think Ben is any kind of angel. He’s an immature jackass who behaves like a frat boy. But there is no credible evidence of sexual assault and that woman is as responsible for her sleazy behavior that night as he is.

To the guy worried about Eric Foster There is no history this action in Fosters’ past.
To all the Steeler fans still defending Ben. The guy has been accused repeatedly ( not just the 2 times that gained national attention) of sexual assualt. As for the suspension, trust Goddell had investigators in Georgia as well as, Ohio looking into claims of indecency.
Also Goddell knows that anything less than 4 games would result in a few of the “employees” of this league to have problem with the way this thing was handled. Pacman Jones was NEVER found guilty of anything but, his continued assault on the NFL’s IMAGE is what got him susspended in the end.

As for the dumass that thinks this is racial because Ben GOT suspended….. You too are a dumass. If Ben had not been suspended that would have been a racial issue. I again point to the fact that Pacman Jones was never CONVICTED of anyhthing but ACCUSED of everything. Most charges against him where dropped due to LACK OF EVIDENCE. Is he an idiot YES INDEED. Ben has been accused of the same incident several times throughout HIS LIFE not just these last 2 times. His actions are no less than all the accusations Mike Tyson endoured during his heyday. The only difference is Ben has not been accused of outright rape YET.
If this guy is smart he will find himself a nice god fearing whore to pay 3 amybe 4 times her usual asking price to dress up like a school girl so he can have his liberties with her all the while looking for little Miss Muffett to marry so that he won’t have to go to prison. 228. Deb says: Apr 21, 2010 6:27 PM

    @Poo Flinging Monkey …
You can have vaginal bleeding and bruising from consensual sex and from other sexual activity (such as rough, groping hand contact). No one doubts that sexual contact occurred. The question is whether it was rape. The DA also said the rape kit could not confirm intercourse. Since the allegation was vaginal rape, the absence of intercourse would negate the allegation.
Ben’s behavior that night was abominable. But so was the behavior of the woman who willingly chased him from bar to bar, willingly drank herself into oblivion, willingly told him straight out that she was “down to f–k,” willingly–according to the DA–engaged in MUTUAL sexual conversation and conduct with him all night. This is an issue of personal responsibility. As the DA said, there is plenty of blame to go around to both of them for events that night. She is as responsible for her sleazy behavior as he is. She is not a victim.

Thank God we have an NFL commissioner with managerial courage to stand up and NFL players accountable. Ben’s suspension is appropriate for the gravity of what occurred (though the exact truth may never be known-unless Ben has an Oprah confessional).
That said, to call him a ‘rapist’ is slanderous and unfair-he has not been convicted of rape. Is he guilty of sexual contact with a drunk co-ed in a bar bathroom? Absolutely-and the whole circumstance of the situation suggests that Ben will not win the United Way Citizen of the Year award. Call it for what it is, and avoid judgemental labels that may not be true.
Being a Steelers fan, I am glad to see Ben get suspended and hope they can find a trade partner to get him out of there-the ‘smoke’ about the Steelers looking for a trade more than likely has a bonfire behind it.

  236. Deb says: Apr 21, 2010 9:21 PM

    @Ravenmaniac …
I’ve was wrong, and on that issue, I apologize. I knew he had an ego problem, but kept stubbornly looking at each issue separately on the evidence rather than as a pattern. Despite the flailing of PFTers, there is no credible evidence of rape. You can’t just consider statements by accusers. You also have to read the Nevada court filings that contradict McNulty, the willing participation of the Georgia woman in initiating a sexual encounter, and that a woman supposedly upset by the sight of his penis went back for another party the next week.
The issue isn’t a pattern of sexual abuse–and that’s why Goodell didn’t mention that allegation. It’s a pattern of reckless disregard for appropriate behavior and what’s in his own interest. Riding sans helmet, hosting a frat party with an assault suit pending, getting involved with skanky women, slobbering on every woman he meets, making racist comments to waiters, being rude to fans. But others shake their heads and say that’s not the Ben they know. That Jekyll/Hyde element could indicate alcohol abuse or bipolar disorder–which often go hand in hand. So the one bright spot is the insistence that he get a behavioral evaluation, and I hope, appropriate treatment. You were right.

Just like the refs butchered the game last year when the Steelers beat the Packers. Oh wait, no – that was because of the Packers god awful kicker.

This is 1 time I hope the NFL owners do some sort of collision to keep this idiot from ever starting another game in the NFL.

sorry, steelers fans – as much as you’d hoped, the NFL still isn’t with you on the whole supporting-rape thing.
maybe next time? (james harrison, i’m looking at you…)
    *******************************************
From my perspective, all of the morons on this board who were hoping that Roethlisberger would get suspended, either implicitly or explicitly, also likely hoped that the rape actually occurred so as to have evidence that would keep him from playing. In theory, if inconclusive evidence HAD arose showing that rape did not occur and news got about this, there would be no basis for punishment, including suspension. Therefore, the only alternative, in the absence of knowing what happened, was to hope that it happened – that is, to hope that some girl got raped by a football player that you can’t stand.
To me, that’s more disgusting than anything else.

  246. this class sucks says: Apr 21, 2010 10:33 PM

    @Matt
Well said. The people clamoring for Ben’s suspension were thinking about it on a football level. Not many people on these boards could care less about the girl. Now that you have said that comment you will have plenty of people claiming that they do care about the girl, or don’t care about football in this situation.
I don’t think any impartial observer can look at this and say that this is fair to suspend someone from their job for not being charged with a crime. People will say they are cooperations have every right to do this, and they do. That, however, is the problem. We all laughed at that moron that insulted his boss on his twitter and got fired but if you really think about it someone got fried for voicing an opinion out of the office. Cooperations are the biggest threat to our freedom. How long before someone says on their twitter “I sure hope Obama wins the election” and gets fired by their conservative boss because she is an “at will employee.” Plenty of people are smiling at this rape (although the girl in Georgia didn’t accuse him of rape) case because it means a player they don’t like got suspended but when your player says in public “Christians are stupid” and he gets suspended it wont be as funny. Or when he says “I think Obama-care is stupid” and will be less funny. Then he will just have to keep his opinions to him self, which will be tough because there are cameras everywhere.

  247. Ravenmaniac says: Apr 21, 2010 10:38 PM

I think it funny all of the steeler fans that when they heard the pobbibility of trading ben….everyone said…it is going to take a #1 this year and a #1 next year to get him…too funy.
The steelers are ready to package their #18 with ben for possibly the raiders #8.
As I said before, no one wants ben. The only possibility will probably be the raiders. Still, I would be shocked if he gets traded at all this year.
This has gone from sad to pathetic!

The real trolls ignore you because you try wayyyy too hard to gain acceptance. At least the Ravens fans ( some of them) can enjoy a decent debate. And that’s saying something.
Hey Einstein — no less an authority than Dr. Cyril Wecht found it “puzzling” that the examiners wouldn’t be able to recover even a “nanogram” of genetic material in a case where full-on sexual intercourse had allegedly occurred. In fact, it would be damned-near impossible.
This shoots down the alleged victim’s story right there.
From your own NT Times report you quoted:
“Initial testing found male DNA, although the emergency room doctor found no evidence of semen..”
Yet again — the victim didn’t charge finger-feeling or anything, she charged full-on (forced) intercourse. And yet not a single “nanogram” of DNA could be found afterwards?
    Ruh-roh!
You whine about others having no sense of reason, yet you can’t be reasoned with — because you have no ability TO reason, blinded as you are with your anti-Steeler, anti-Ben bias.

This is a football site. This is a football story. Your constant political references are yet another demonstration of your immaturity.
My research was into the facts of the case, which haven’t changed. Since the facts of the case haven’t changed, my opinion on them hasn’t changed. My rape story is part of my life history. That hasn’t changed either.

I can’t stop laughing about how many of YOUR postings which read “How many players have been suspended that wasn’t charged?” MORON. Just Goodell saying what he did that he can displine with or without charges was PRICELESS. It shut your ignorant mouth shut about that, didn’t it? LMAO Due processes under your comments of criminal activity doesn’t matter to the NFL. And, where did you get YOUR law degree, University of Disney World? It doesn’t take guts to post anonymously on a football board, you poor delusional woman. And I don’t change my principles because a crazy woman throws Internet tantrums, because the majority is for or against me, or because the NFL commissioner disagrees with my position. I believe people are innocent until proved guilty … even people whose lifestyles I find disgusting.
So if you were accused of a crime, I would feel EXACTLY the same about you that I feel about Roethlisberger. Even though I showed you kindness when others were attacking your rape story, while you’ve thrown dung at me … even though you’re a mean, pathetic, thoroughly unlikeable shrew and everything I’m writing is going over your head … I’d still wait to see credible evidence before making a judgment about your guilt. And I wouldn’t argue against your being sentenced when you hadn’t been charged or convicted.

Being raped is not like getting a visit from Tinker Bell. The experience doesn’t leave you sprinkled with fairy dust so that suddenly you can fly, are overflowing with compassion for all womankind, and never again post anything sarcastic on a blog. That’s why even if we could arrange for you to be raped, it wouldn’t stop you from making snarky posts about other rape survivors.
Here’s a clue, jimicos. Suspensions by the league office mean jack shit when it comes to my ideals of criminal justice and due process. Football commissioners have no business trying to legislate morality. And this stuff has been going on among NFL players since the days of leather helmets. Suspending Ben Roethlisberger may help Ben. I hope so. It won’t do anything to change the the behavior of anyone else in the league. That’s just the way it is. I suggest you accept it and look forward to the next arrest.
