Raiders enter the Big Ben picture

Not long ago, there was a belief that the Steelers hadn’t ruled out a trade of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in order to scare him regarding the possibility of being traded to Oakland.

Now, he may have good reason to be afraid.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that the Steelers have been in contact with the Raiders regarding a possible trade, and that Oakland “[m]ight be [the] only real option.”

The Steelers apparently want a top-ten pick for Roethlisberger.  If the Raiders won’t send the eighth overall selection to Pittsburgh, the next question becomes whether the Steelers would begin to consider taking pick 11, 12, or 13.

The 49ers hold the 13th pick, and Roethlisberger grew up rooting for the team.

This trade would make sense. I would rather have Big Ben then some mickey Mouse Rookie QB. If the Raiders pull this trade out then they would be instant AFC west champs.

Trading him to Oakland would be real punishment!

  21. CJV123 says: Apr 21, 2010 3:44 PM

What if the Steelers trade BB for #8, then package that #8 pick with their own 1st and move into the top 3/4? They could then end up with either Bradford or Clausen.

  22. Brandon Folsom says: Apr 21, 2010 3:44 PM

Oakland and Rottenberger deserve each other. Give him the Randy Moss treatment and make him feel miserable for a few years. Jackass.

  23. Nevisyakker says: Apr 21, 2010 3:44 PM

    Rothlisberger for Russell even up!
“The 49ers hold the 13th pick, and Roethlisberger grew up rooting for the team.”
You may need to check the definition of “grew up.”
While Ben R. certainly has gained size (and then some) he continues to act like a petulant, oversexed 13 year old.

  24. markusj says: Apr 21, 2010 3:44 PM

really? you think the steelers give a shit if big ben rooted for the 49ers growing up? This isnt Ben lobbying to get out of Pittsburgh nor is it them asking him where he would like to go so he will sign a contract extension. They are dumping him…where he wants to go isnt worried about or the raiders would never of been called.

Here we go. Raiders couldn’t snag McNabb, but they have another shot here with Big Ben. I say pull the trigger and get him. Raiders have nothing to lose. They finally get their franchise QB.

  29. WarrenMoonGOAT says: Apr 21, 2010 3:45 PM

u can scrath the 11th and 12th pick off that list, i think they’re satisfied with what they have at QB

  30. goinalldaway says: Apr 21, 2010 3:45 PM

Wow I would take this guy. But I would not give up a top ten pick. I say pick up a left tackle with the 8th pick and then trade 2012 first round pick. Hopefully if we play well we end up in the early to mid 20’s.

  31. Skin_Flute says: Apr 21, 2010 3:45 PM

Just because a team doesn’t want Big Ben doesn’t mean that Big Ben won’t have the team. I could see him plying the Bills with liquor and then having his bodyguards hold them down.
Just ask Ben, the Bill’s mouth says NO but their eyes say OH YEAH.

  32. jj jones says: Apr 21, 2010 3:45 PM

The Raiders make sense. He would be better than anything they would take there anyway.

  33. raiders177 says: Apr 21, 2010 3:45 PM

Big Ben was a Niners fan?
I don’t see Al doing this because he hates to pay players who won’t be able to play. This is why he was reluctant to bench Fatty McFatFat; he didn’t want to pay a boatload of $$ for someone to sit on the bench. I don’t see Al paying a guy who can’t play for 6 games.

  34. CleanSlaton says: Apr 21, 2010 3:45 PM

They already have a fatass loser at QB that doesn’t give a shit about being in the NFL in Jamarcus Russell; they don’t need two.

  35. trickbunny says: Apr 21, 2010 3:47 PM

If Rapenstein is traded to the silver and black, they should change their name to the Oakland Rapers.
if this happens, it will be the ultimate degradation for the Steelers and their fans- and a great day for the rest of us

  36. Stone says: Apr 21, 2010 3:47 PM

No one besides the Raiders is going to touch Rapistberger with a ten foot pole. The Steelers should just swap him and their 1st round pick for Oakland’s 1st and 2nd round picks this year.

  37. Poo Flinging Monkey says: Apr 21, 2010 3:47 PM

Al: Get me Jamarcus Russell on the phone… Jamarcus, It’s Al. Pack your bags and clear out your locker.

Florio, your imagnation never ceases to amaze… No one in their right mind would give up a top #1 (or any 1st Rd. pick) for Rothlisrapist right now. A #2, some sort of a swap, and/or a conditional future pick is probably the best the Steelers are gonna get.

  48. mrfootball101 says: Apr 21, 2010 3:51 PM

I’m guessing that the trade would be better than any pick that Al could make in his senile mind!!!

  49. dthomas53 says: Apr 21, 2010 3:51 PM

  50. tryagain says: Apr 21, 2010 3:51 PM

While it is convenient that you regurgitate the tweets of others in one place, it would be fantastic if you did some actual reporting to confirm whether any of these calls are even taking place, and if so, by whom they’re being initiated.

  54. Junior says: Apr 21, 2010 3:53 PM

That’s La Canfora’s opinion. Yet you write it like the Raiders have expressed interest.
Again, please hold your breath waiting for the Raiders to confirm or deny any interest. Then when you pass out, we won’t have to get caught up in your speculative writing. Your title suggest that the Raiders have expressed interest when they haven’t.

  55. mike428 says: Apr 21, 2010 3:53 PM

I love football and for the last several years it’s been a very tough love. Clearly from a football stand point, a full Season with Roethlisburger would make them a playoff team. I don’t care. I’d rather lose than root for that piece of crap. Any decent man who read the police report and heard about the predatory nature of Roethlisburger and the injuries to the young woman should feel the same.

    irish4life,
That is one of the dumbest posts I have ever seen on here. They might win 3-4 more games, but Oakland would still finish 3rd or 4th in that division. The Raiders could have Jesus Christ quarterbacking and they would still suck.

  87. SportsDevil says: Apr 21, 2010 4:13 PM

Do it Raiders! Oakland has a QB that can stay out of trouble off the field but can’t (and presumably) doesn’t want to do anything on it. On the other hand, Rapistberger can do anything of the field, but can’t keep his pants on off of it.
If Art Rooney can think of a better solution/punishment than this I’d love to see it.
And there’s no chance the Raiders could take anyone better with the #8 pick.

From Browns, Jaguars, Bills, Rams, Seahawks – to Raiders is a plus. Raiders are ahead of 3 of this teams in standings and are just tied with the other 2. So, yeah its been shaky in Oakland the last few yrs theyve been searching for a real QB and alot of losses later they find their guy.
Oakland has the History, Theme, SBs, Colors, Fans, Attitude and Swagger every player loves..

The Steelers are smoking with Santonio if they think they can get a top 10 for Ben. ONE team (ALLEJABLEE) wants him.
The Raiders want Iupati, Davis, Pouncey or Brown, odds are 2 or 3 of them will be there at 18. This trade could happen if the Raiders are stupid enough to big against themselves.

He is virtually untradeable if the Steelers are expecting “true market value.” Look at Santonio Holmes (coming off a career year) he was almost cut until the Jets offered a 5th rounder.
Ben is worth maybe a third rounder given his current suspension status.
Miss me with the bullshit. No way any team gives up a top ten pick for a part time player with baggage. And we are talking a particular type of “good ole frat boy with a drinking problem” baggage.

For all of you dumb asses comparing this trade to holmes because of a suspension you are retarded. Yes, the Steelers only got a 5th for Holmes coming off a career year……and yes, a big part of that is because he is suspended for the first 4 games…..but after the season is over he is a free agent…..that is the main reason they took so little, essentially they got a 5th round pick for a player under contract for 12 games… they werent going to resign him anyway….
Ben on the other hand, is suspended for 6 games (will end up being 4), but you have a 28 yr old, 2 time Super Bowl Champion, who has baggage yes, but is a major upgrade over all but 4 teams qbs in the league…..and the kicker, he is under contract until 2014, so he is not a rental like Holmes. Also keep in mind what the Bears gave up to get crybaby Cutler……he barely has a winning record let alone 8-2 in the playoffs, and 2 rings. They likely are trying to get a top ten pick, either a player, or a second this year and next, and a future conditional.
So Ben for a 1st Rounder, 2nd Rounder or player, 2nd Rounder next year, and a Future conditional pick. If he goes (which he wont, because nobody will give up that much for him) that is what it will cost. Just look at the Cutler trade for the market regarding a franchise QB…..forget the baggage, and the suspension….every team that even considers this isnt going to win next year with or without him…it will take time.

How is trading a 1st rounder for Roethlisberger a bad idea? He has 2 rings to go with a 15-1 season & AFC Championship appearance AS A ROOKIE. Sure, he has been an idiot off the field, but on the field he has been a winner and you know exactly what you’re getting. All the talk about how the defense carried him in Pittsburgh, he actually sucks, etc. is a bunch of BS. The numbers and the rings don’t lie.
You’re going to spend a lot more guaranteed money than Roethlisberger will be owed on anyone you draft with that pick, with no idea how he will turn out as a player or a person. Suspension or not, there is nobody that’s going to be drafted with that pick that is going to make as much of an impact this year or next, if ever.
Anybody you draft is a complete risk, so trading that pick for a known commodity seems like far less of a risk, as long as you think your organization has the pieces in place to keep Ben in line.
Kobe Bryant, Bernard Hopkins, Ray Lewis & many others have put themselves in some bad situations too, but seem to be doing OK now…

–Why? So you can get beat twice this year by a good QB and miss the playoffs? As opposed to losing to Jamarcus Russell in Denver like the past 2 seasons and missing the playoffs?
Stupid, drunk, fat or whatever, I’d rather have Roethlisberger at QB than Orton or Quinn any day based on his playing ability and championship experience. Don’t even get on your moral high horse (pun intended) either, because you support a “Bronco orginazation” that signed Travis Henry, drafted Maurice Clarett, Brandon Marshall….I could go on but any 1 of those 3 proves my point.
So if Ben a) is better than any QB in the division other than Rivers and would instantly upgrade a team who has beaten Denver with Jamarcus Russell & Josh McCown the past 3 years, b) has 2 rings and an AFC Championship appearance since 2004 c) brings baggage but not near as much as several recent Broncos, eliminating the moral argument, then why do you wish this trade would happen?

The only way I see him going for a first rounder is if hes not going alone. If the Steelers want a top 30 pick for him they will have to package him with either a high mid round pick or another player.
This isnt like Vick going to the Eagles where really the big problem with him came from the outside with PETA and people like that. Ben is hated by the football community so any team that trades for him wont only be pissing off outsiders they will be pissing off their own fans too.
NFL teams know this and also know the Steelers are up against a wall. So they are going to squeeze them to accept something less then what they want. And if the Steelers arent willing to make that adjustment they will just walk away because the problems he brings greatly out weight his talent. No matter how many superbowls hes won.

    P. Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees are top 3. But check the stats on the rest: Rodgers, Romo & Rivers are the only ones on your list w/ a better career QB rating than Roethlisberger. Rodgers, Romo & Schaub have a slightly higher completion pct. Only McNabb has a better W-L record. But Big Ben has as many rings as all those guys combined.
