Browns will offer most of their picks for Bradford

Cleveland Browns front office boss Mike Holmgren says he’s enamored enough with Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford that he’s going to make one final pitch to the St. Louis Rams to try to acquire the first overall pick.

Holmgren told ESPN’s Michael Smith that he would be willing to trade most of the Browns’ 10 picks and maybe some 2011 picks for Bradford. But Holmgren thinks the Rams will turn him down.

They shouldn’t do it,” Holmgren said. “They need a quarterback more than anyone in the world.”

So Holmgren thinks, like everyone else, that the Rams will take Bradford. But he’ll try to convince them to take his trade offer instead.

“It’s not going to happen,” Holmgren said. “I just got out of a meeting and I told everyone, let [the board] come to us. That said, I’m going to go make the call.”

I’d do it and grab Clausen

  2. Larry David says: Apr 22, 2010 5:55 PM

Why are the Browns paying Heckert to be their GM when Holmgren obviously runs the show?

  3. JSpicoli says: Apr 22, 2010 5:56 PM

Great move, give the farm to Delhomme and then the rest of the portfolio for Bradford.
    Ditka just laughed.

When did Ditka move to Cleveland?

  8. Other Bears says: Apr 22, 2010 5:57 PM

Holmgren is just blowing smoke. He’s not that stupid. If anything, he’s just trying to gauge how much the Rams really even want Bradford.

  9. mzezulak says: Apr 22, 2010 5:57 PM

Maybe for all clevelands 2010 draft picks plus the 2011 1st and 2nd rounders and Josh Cribbs.

Oh, for the love of Otto Graham . . . please stop this nonsense.

  11. tre_fizzle says: Apr 22, 2010 5:58 PM

They’d be idiots not to. I don’t care if you need a ‘chise QB…getting like 6 extra picks is an instant team builder for someone like the Rams.

  12. TheToolofTools says: Apr 22, 2010 5:58 PM

    Please… a Ditka move ?
Say this is a joke !

  13. ApemanAl says: Apr 22, 2010 5:59 PM

Holmgren does that and I’ll personally drive him to the airport when he’s canned. That would be a disaster for Cleveland. I like Bradford, but not enough to give up the picks in this year’s deep draft.

  14. odds75to1 says: Apr 22, 2010 5:59 PM

Hope this is a smokescreen, or I feel bad for Browns fans!! Sounds like a Millenesque type move!

  15. kishcollageit says: Apr 22, 2010 6:00 PM

Talk about mortgage your future! There are other teams staying home because they did the same.

  16. lasher1674 says: Apr 22, 2010 6:02 PM

Take their picks, choose Clausen at 7, he is statistically as likely to be a good NFL QB as Bradford.

  17. 305phinphan says: Apr 22, 2010 6:02 PM

The new version of the Ricky Williams trade?

  18. ninerfan says: Apr 22, 2010 6:03 PM

When did Holmgren become bipolar (or Mike Ditka)?

  19. KingGator13 says: Apr 22, 2010 6:03 PM

When did the Browns hire Ditka? Holmgren & Bradford … who’s going to wear the wedding dress?

  20. Mean D says: Apr 22, 2010 6:04 PM

    More draft day BS.

  21. funi says: Apr 22, 2010 6:04 PM

Browns trade for Bradford, week 1 McCoy sacks him and Bradford out for season with seperated shoulder and clowns go 3-13!!

  22. Deel says: Apr 22, 2010 6:06 PM

They sure should do it, the Rams are bad enough that taking the farm and getting the best QB available at 7 would be more then worth it.

  23. Habinskie says: Apr 22, 2010 6:06 PM

    Somewhere Mike Ditka is smiling.

  24. bigfog says: Apr 22, 2010 6:07 PM

I’d jump all over that if I were the Rams. I thought Holmgren was supposed to be smart?

  25. Teblow Fever! says: Apr 22, 2010 6:07 PM

Entire draft for an injury prone QB would set the team back another 3 years

  26. wahoobob says: Apr 22, 2010 6:08 PM

So you’re reporting that “he’ll try to convince them to take his trade offer” of all 10 2010 picks and maybe some 2011 picks (which I assume would be last in each round since the Browns would no doubt beat the Rams in the Super Bowl because they have Bradford and the Rams have what, 20 picks this year, and all other Cleveland positions are just fine).
Holmgren himself says “It’s not going to happen.” Now that I am completely educated on this point, I don’t even need to watch this weekend. I guess now I don’t even need to watch the draft and can work on my stamp collection instead.

  27. axtonian says: Apr 22, 2010 6:08 PM

    open letter to browns trust:
    do what u want to
    get what we need
    know what u do
    be convinced
browns want good pics that can play now

  28. Vikings4life says: Apr 22, 2010 6:10 PM

i would trade #1 overall pick for 4-8 picks, there are other good QBs in the draft.

  29. READY2CRUSH says: Apr 22, 2010 6:10 PM

Smells like one last giant smokescreen to make it look like he wants a QB (Clausen)…. to get either Oakland or Buffalo to trade up. I still dont think Clausen makes it past the Bills.
Nice bluff Holmgren but we all know no one tells us what theyre really going to do. Besides, Cleveland has too many other holes to fill. He wouldnt mortage the draft for one guy who cant fix the franchise by himself.

  30. QJ1984 says: Apr 22, 2010 6:12 PM

The Rams would be smart to take the deal. They can probably still grab Colt McCoy later. Its not like they are a franchise QB away from the Superbowl. They need an entire makeover just to not have a top 3 pick, AGAIN, next season. This is a deep draft they can use those extra picks to really help themselves. Bradford isnt a cant miss prospect.

  31. Tre-nitty says: Apr 22, 2010 6:13 PM

If he offers most of his board and Billy devaney declines it, it will prove that devaney should be fired immediately. If holmgren offers more than 2 picks and devaney doesn’t take it, he’s a complete dork like I’ve stated before.

  32. rom78 says: Apr 22, 2010 6:13 PM

If i was st louis i would do this deal all day, i would ask for at least 6 picks this year and the browns first pick next year, and most likey that pick will be a top 10 pick, and at 7 get claussen

  33. sniperhare says: Apr 22, 2010 6:14 PM

Rams would be stupid to pass that up. Bradford isn’t a Manning or Rivers, he’s average, get a 1st next year and pick up Mallett or Ponder or Locker. All three are better than Bradford.

  34. gm12086 says: Apr 22, 2010 6:15 PM

Mike Holmgren should be stoned outside Cleveland Browns stadium if he actually does this. You don’t trade a $h*t ton of picks for the next two years on a team with a lot of holes for one player I don’t care if it is a QB. Sam Bradford is the #1 QB in a sub-par QB class whoopity-doo!!!! Take Jevan Snead probably in the 4th round and there ya go…

  35. C.Bass says: Apr 22, 2010 6:15 PM

As a Steeler fan, I hope the browns do this. Overpay for a QB a year before the rookie cap goes into effect.
Plus, the browns NEED all their draft picks. It’s not like the browns are a QB away from the SB. And Bradford isn’t a sure bet. I hope they make a “Ricky Williams” draft day trade.
I think Holmgren is playing games though. I woul;d take all the browns draft picks (even only rounds 1-5) for the #1 pick. That gives the Rams the #7 pick and 2-4 picks in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds.

  36. HarrisonHits says: Apr 22, 2010 6:17 PM

Holmgren would be an idiot to trade so much for 1 player. The Browns need a lot more than a QB to become a decent team.

  37. hotchick says: Apr 22, 2010 6:18 PM

If I’m the Rams I make that deal, then roll with one of the other QB’s that would be available at any of the spots the Browns’ give up.
Heck go with a crap QB this year and grab who you need next year after the team has improved and maybe a free agent would want to go there.
Could they afford to sign that many rookies?
    Doubt it.
They’d have to package the multitude of picks they would have after this deal was done. They could essentially move into almost any draft spot(s) they they wanted and draft anyone they wanted throughout the draft.

  38. Sociofan says: Apr 22, 2010 6:18 PM

Did Holmgren secretly hire Vinny Cerrato as an advisor?

  39. lanche says: Apr 22, 2010 6:19 PM

    That’s it?
If I were the Browns, I’d offer all my draft picks for the next three years, plus any four players of the Rams choice, for the honor of giving Bradford a $50 million contract.
In a heartbeat. They guys a can’t miss prospect.

  40. Maddog says: Apr 22, 2010 6:20 PM

The Browns want Berry and are trying to do everything they can to make it look like they want someone else. This is shaping up as the perfect scenario for them. Berry at 7, and McCoy in 2nd, or possibly trading up to end of first. As a Steeler fan I hope it doesn’t go that way, but things look good for Cleveland tonight.

  41. kazkal says: Apr 22, 2010 6:21 PM

    He’d be Fing crazy…
1st and a 2nd maybe but most of their picks? does he know who he has on the roster?

  42. coz says: Apr 22, 2010 6:23 PM

    hahahah holmgren is sooooo overrated………

  43. GoBrowns19 says: Apr 22, 2010 6:26 PM

It was obviously either a joke or a bad smokescreen if those are in fact his exact words. He made fun of doing that a week ago.

  44. JtheP says: Apr 22, 2010 6:26 PM

DO IT!!! Then trade one the Browns 1st and 3rd for Big Ben.

  45. SFTitan says: Apr 22, 2010 6:27 PM

Please… there’s not enough Ditka references in this thread. We need more Ditka.
    Ditka.

  46. doni says: Apr 22, 2010 6:31 PM

The Browns could be a winning franchise if they would just move to Baltimore…….again!

  47. last starfighter says: Apr 22, 2010 6:32 PM

    holmgren aint a gm

  48. DZ says: Apr 22, 2010 6:38 PM

I heard Terry Bradshaw was dead too. An obvious joke being reported as news. Talk about throwing “stuff” at a wall and seeing what sticks.

  49. jibfest says: Apr 22, 2010 6:38 PM

    Sounds Hershel Walker-ish to me.

  50. magsdad1 says: Apr 22, 2010 6:39 PM

The Rams would be insane not to do this. They would have at least two more chances o select a QB. If I were them, I take Tebow. Why? Because they get press. And for that franchise right now, they need to be relevant. Not to mention the ownership issues going on right now.
Browns? If you do this…..can’t even put it into words.
Yes I can. At least the heat will be off Denver.

  51. ninjapleazee says: Apr 22, 2010 6:46 PM

maybe in Madden football game.. oh wait…. Ditka…

  52. JoeSixPack says: Apr 22, 2010 6:48 PM

Yes, because the Browns are just a QB away from winning a Super Bowl.
    BWHAHHH! HAH! HA!
Pleasee Commissioner Goodell – punish Rothlesberger by sending him to the Browns. They deserve each other!!!!

  53. pondbridge says: Apr 22, 2010 6:49 PM

Great, so when Holmgren takes McCoy, he always knows that the czar always wanted someone else. Shrewd, Walrus.

  54. TheDPR says: Apr 22, 2010 6:51 PM

I call BS on Holmgren’s claim. If the Browns offered anything like he suggests, the Rams would be all over it. If no deal happens it is because he lowballed them.
I don’t get all the Sam Bradford love.

  55. Glassman says: Apr 22, 2010 6:57 PM

    Here’s a trade scenario:
Browns make the trade up to #1 using most of their ’10 picks, and maybe a future pick. They take Bradford @ #1. Rams then take their 1st rounder from Cleveland and ship it with Cleveland’s 2nd rounder to Pittsburgh for Roethlisberger. If Holgrem is genuine in saying that he’d give up most of his draft for Bradford, the Rams would have to take that considering the holes they could fill with the extra picks.

  56. Ace says: Apr 22, 2010 7:09 PM

    Browns, please trade for Rapistberger

  57. buckifan4life says: Apr 22, 2010 7:09 PM

    Won’t happen. Just a bunch of hype…

  58. Cougar Bait says: Apr 22, 2010 7:21 PM

When did Sam Bradford become the second coming of Joe Montana? I don’t buy this for a second…unless Mike Ditka quantum leaped into Mike Holmgren.

  59. jebdamone says: Apr 22, 2010 7:22 PM

i do get all the sam bradford love and think that he has potential to be the next GREAT QB. kid is phenomenal in almost every category applicable to a QB and under the right circumstances will be a decade pro bowler. as a vikings fan, he is the only guy in this draft that i REALLY want. i would give up the vikings first this year, next year and probably my second as well for bradford. what value do you put on a QB who is of bradford’s caliber (which i believe to be elite)?
