Eagles climb up to get Brandon Graham

It was rumored that the Eagles were looking to trade up to get safety Eric Berry or safety Earl Thomas.  They ultimately made a move, with Thomas on the clock.

And they didn’t take him.

Instead, the 13th overall pick is defensive end Brandon Graham from Michigan.

Philly reportedly gave up two third-round picks (and presumably their first-round pick) to make the jump.

Per Sal Paolantonio of ESPN, the Eagles did not want to give up the “Donovan pick” — the high second-rounder obtained in the trade with the Redskins.

I’m not sold on him, but to keep 2 seconds is amazing.

Good pick, eagles really needed a end to take all the pressure off of trent cole. If this guy can come in a help out rite away look for cole to have a really good year

  10. buddha says: Apr 22, 2010 9:12 PM

Now let the haters pile on and tell us Eagle fans how bad this player is gonna be even before they get a chance to see what he can do.. . . . . . . . . .

Jerome McDougal all over again. Typical Eagles think they can outsmart eveybody.

  13. pjhurley says: Apr 22, 2010 9:16 PM

Unreal we gave up 3 thirds for this bum; I don’t care if he is a good player, those 3rds are like 2nds in this deep draft and the 24th pick would’ve been just fine. I am usually on board with Eagles draft b/c they usually do well in the draft but I am so sick of drafting or trading for defensive ends.

  14. Mooch says: Apr 22, 2010 9:17 PM

PS – we can’t go into next season with White Man Hips at FS.
No way, no how. Macho Harris would be a bottom 5 player at his position and the worst starting FS since Erik McMillian.
PPS – I know, but at least Rich Miano could tackle.

Not sure what to think about this one yet. New Era Scouting has a good report on him, comparing him to Lamarr Woodley:
    http://www.newerascouting.com/02/brandon-graham-scouting-report/
Reading that makes me a bit more comfortable than when I first heard Goodell say his name. Still, it DOES seem like another Andy Reid undersized fastball pick. Trying to have faith here…

  20. LE says: Apr 22, 2010 9:21 PM

    Abiamiri v2

  21. DP says: Apr 22, 2010 9:22 PM

I don’t trust any DE/LB this team takes. Should have gone S. What’s the point of giving up 2 3’s when there were other higher rated DE’s on the board? sigh and agree with the rest, another undersized lineman to add to the D-Line rotation of other bust picks like Abiamiri & Co. Can’t we trade Reid?

  22. Footba11Joe says: Apr 22, 2010 9:22 PM

This guy better be a beast. Giving up two 3rd rounders… with Earl Thomas on the board. Another frustrating Eagles draft. Reid has proved me wrong before; he better do it again.

  23. thekid14 says: Apr 22, 2010 9:22 PM

so we move up to take the third best DE in the draft. sounds like reid to me.

  28. socojava says: Apr 22, 2010 9:33 PM

Everyone above me is at least mildly retarded. The Eagles will use Graham as a linebacker.

  29. Richard says: Apr 22, 2010 9:36 PM

Unexpected. Seems a tad undersized but hopefully he can put on a few LBs… Wait ans see I guess.

  30. Opie says: Apr 22, 2010 9:43 PM

@ Vox Veritas: because you “know” what you’re talking about I’ll give you…..wait a minute. You’re a dolt.
Graham is a stud. I’m not saying that I wasn’t surprised, but this kid can get after it. I would’ve liked to see Pouncey, but at the end of the day, give the kids some credit. No way the Eagles were to get this kid, no one predicted that.
As for the worst pick so far….um, Alualu?!? Really? I think he’d have been there much later…..who made this pick for Jax, Al Davis?!?

  31. D3Keith says: Apr 22, 2010 9:45 PM

This really isn’t that shocking. Reid and Co. lurrrrrrve their linemen/pass rushers. These guys never draft for need, they go BPA. And it usually works out.
Once we get a chance to digest this, we’ll start to fall in love with Graham.
Also I think it means we really like our chances of getting a CB/S in the second round. (Perhaps they also were serious about the Ellis Hobbs thing) They might move back from 37 and get more picks too.
It’s way too easy to try to judge the draft after today, but if we come away with Ghee and Allen or whoever, we might learn to like this.

  32. ryancl05 says: Apr 22, 2010 9:50 PM

Everyone is so quick to dismiss this pick, im gonna go out on a limb here and say that non of the above have ever had a position in the NFL. There is something the Eagles seen in this player to draft him. Just give him a chance.

  33. penguininbondage says: Apr 22, 2010 9:54 PM

His weight is 268 not 238 as a few places that listed a report. I’ve never seen him play so i’ll wait and see.
Nice to have two seconds still.

  34. thekid14 says: Apr 22, 2010 9:55 PM

i sure wouldnt mind picking up allen if he is available. it just surprises me that we picked graham over jpp and morgan. i personally would have preferred a DB, but going DE, i think there was still better choices. just my 2 cents

  35. D3Keith says: Apr 22, 2010 9:55 PM

Vox Veritas … his sole purpose here is to try to get under the skin of Philly fans. Stop taking the bait.

  36. mjposner says: Apr 22, 2010 9:55 PM

Well I honestly don’t know but Rick Gosselin a highly respected draft writer had Graham as no. 1o and said:
Graham is the most polished pass rusher in this draft. He’ll have the quickest impact – and a Jacksonville defense that ranked last in the NFL in sacks is in dire need of someone who can have an instant impact
If hevis right it is a good move. I bet we go safety or corner at 37.

  37. mookieburns13 says: Apr 22, 2010 9:59 PM

Who saw this guy? I kind of wanted a big LDE to complement the DT’s and Cole.
    Safety in rd 2.
PS – two thirds was cheap to move up that much, IMO.

  49. jreed says: Apr 23, 2010 12:24 AM

I was hoping for Earl Thomas But after I thought about it. A player like Graham will force the QB to throw early, Off target, or take a sack. We still have 2 seconds to address Safety and CB. Only two Safetys have been drafted so far. I think we will go after Mays with our first second round pick. Or possibly trade it for a second and third….Some teams may be looking for clausen at our pick tomorrow…Hmmmm!

  50. wolfgang1983 says: Apr 23, 2010 1:52 AM

    More undersized linemen, hooray!!!!
Reid and co. are brilliant, really
    ————————————————————————————————————
I guess by “undersized” you are only looking at height, which isn’t all that important to DEs except for batting passes. Because Graham is hardly “undersized” in terms of stoutness and strength, in fact at close to 6’2″ and 268 pounds Graham is easily one of the strongest ends in the entire draft.
Graham also plays with AMAZING leverage and has been able to consistently drive bigger lineman straight back with a bull rush that is equaled to no other end in this draft.
LDE for the Eagles needs to be stout and strong against the run and will be asked to take on double teams at times and also the blocking TE. Graham can do that WAY better than JPP or Morgan. Not to mention that Graham has non stop hustle and a arsenal of pass rush moves to compliment his bull rush which is needed at the NFL level.
Graham was also the most consistent, and most productive of all the ends for the past TWO seasons on the field–which should matter. lol. To boot he also was the most impressive DE in senior bowl practices, and simply DOMINATED in the senior bowl game against the top draft eligible seniors at OT.
this was the perfect pick and the perfect trade to do so. We were able to get the best DE in the draft, and also keep our 2 2nd rounders. We still have 2 4ths and players like Joselio Hansen, Omar Gaither, trevor Laws and Vicot Abiamiri who could be packaged with picks ot move up, plus we can use one 4th and a 5th and get back into the 3rd round. Was great value, great need (yes DE is a BIG need, Tapp could be solid, but the Eagles now have a potential 3 DE rotation that could be great—-similar to the Giants with Osi, Strahan and Tuck if it works out. Plus, on obvious passing downs Graham has the leverage and strength to play under tackle and be a rushing specialist which is VERY valuable—like Tuck did for NY when they won it all!)
    so think, think, think

  51. wydok says: Apr 23, 2010 6:38 AM

I will reserve judgement until I see him play. At least they picked up a position of need.

  52. Mooch says: Apr 23, 2010 7:10 AM

When you think about it, we face two QB’s that are incapable of completing passes when pressured (McNabb and Romo), and one who throws blindly into coverage when he sees pressure coming at him (Manning).
So, yeah. I like it. Not getting pressure on Romo was alarming last year. I am still concerned about the run defense, so let’s get a tough safety and some bigger LB’s at some point tonight / tomorrow.

  53. Kevin from Philly says: Apr 23, 2010 8:29 AM

Meh. Not in love with the pick. At DE, I would have preffered Morgan or the kid from TCU, but at least they didn’t take Pierre-Paul Mounds. They need to hit home runs with the second rounders.

  54. godfather says: Apr 23, 2010 8:53 AM

Love the pick. The rest of the NFC East should be worried. If Andy continues to rebuild this defense and give McDermott more weapons, we might not be in last place after all.

  55. dsp1899 says: Apr 23, 2010 8:57 AM

Not a fan of this pick either, but look at the opposing O-lines in the NFC East….all three teams have weak lines so this is good for Philly. Plus I see us using the 37th pick on Taylor Mays!

  56. SliKRiK says: Apr 23, 2010 8:58 AM

I’m sick of this team! This has jerome macdougle written all over it! I’m tired of this team picking undersized bum ass line-man every 1st round WTF! I can’t wait till we go 2 – 14 this year and fire fat f**k reid!

  57. KingMiedus says: Apr 23, 2010 9:25 AM

He’s probably not going to play DE, he’ll be an OLB

  58. Mooch says: Apr 23, 2010 9:58 AM

Slik – McDougle was a stout all-around DE. Graham is a rush end, he looks like he’s shot out of a cannon at the snap. Let’s see what we get in rd 2.

  59. Chop Block Murphy says: Apr 23, 2010 10:33 AM

I was initially pissed that they didn’t nab Thomas, but after taking some time to digest this I’m pumped. They needed a complement to Cole. Bolstering the line will make the entire D better. And though most had JPP and Morgan rated a bit higher, I really like what I’m reading about Graham this morning.
Now let’s shore up that secondary today (sucks that 5 frickin’ CBs are off the board already, though).

  60. mcon19014 says: Apr 23, 2010 11:25 AM

i’m as down on this regime as any…BUT this dude rates high. I wanted E.T too, but after thinking about it getting a good pass rushger will make the secondary’s job eaiser.
If taking a DE I would have gone with Derrick Morgan, seems more wel lrounded but it’s a Fn crap shoot. But you guys all know what you are talking about, so I digress.

Have to take issue with some of the names not addressed:
    A. Davis – Played 91-95, 95-97 for Eagles and Atl., considered excellent pick at the time, just never developed.
    L. Holmes – Played 93-96, 97-2000 for Eagles, Oak. and Atl.. Wound up being a good guard, left for F.A. contract.
    B. Williams – had excellent rookie year, started 16 games, had severe drug problems and was banned from NFL for life.
    B. Smith – 90-93, 93-96 for Eagles, Broncos and Ari.. Had an excellent rookie year then had severe leg injury and was never the same.
Renfro, Mamula, Harris were legitimate busts, otherwise the 0-3gles ( that just never gets old either, real knee slapper ), have drafted pretty well.
