Joe Montana has a bias, too

In this season of folks touting — and trashing — quarterback prospects with a hidden agenda, the latest guy to wade into the fray, Hall of Famer Joe Montana, has a built-in bias, too.

Earlier today, Montana touted quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

Montana’s sons are coached by Steve Clarkson, who also has been coaching Clausen.  Clarkson trains all of the quarterback clients of Clausen’s agent, Gary Wichard.  Also,

As one league source said, “Isn’t it a coincidence that he came out of his media shell today?”

Then there’s the fact that Montana, like Jim Kelly, isn’t really in a position to be making knowledgeable recommendations on NFL prospects, given that Montana like Kelly has never undertaken the thankless, grind-it-out job of scouting.

Plus they both went to Notre Dame….

One big difference you forget to mention. Kelly was directing comments to the Bills. What on earth is wrong for an ex-player to take a specific interest in a player and make his opinion available to all?

I would hardly say he “touted” Jimmy Clausen. Read the quote.

Not only that, but Joe Montana and Jimmy Clausen are both Caucasian American males with a fondness for sports. Coincidence? I think not.

Um… aside from all those random connections… didn’t Joe Montana GO TO NOTRE DAME.

Montana’s son goes to the same high school as Clausen did…Oaks Christian HS.

as long as the grinders are salivating over guys like Ryan Leaf, I’ll just as soon take Joe Montana’s opinion over theirs. It’s a crapshoot. If it was a science, Tom Brady would have been taken 1st, not 199th.
Stop bitching about Jim Kelly. Yeah, he’s a moron. So is everybody else when it comes to evaluation college players and projecting them to NFL success.

Wouldn’t the Notre Dame connection be an obvious bias?

  9. downwithdansnyder says: Apr 22, 2010 7:40 PM

Geezus, did you watch Jimmy? He’s got it all.

  10. Sonny Mooks says: Apr 22, 2010 7:44 PM

You actually made a conspiracy theory out of this ?
I think its a wee bit simpler………one famous Notre Dame Alumni endorsed another Notre Dame alumni (and latter alumni also went to the same high school as the sons of the former alumni).
    see, much simpler.

I’m sure them both being Notre Dame alums didn’t hurt either.

Florio throwing in that last sentence of scout nut-hugging in order to buy more respect.
It goes without saying these guys arent real scouts, so please stop pandering for thank you notes.

    But you guys are… hilarious.

Montana can do whatever he wants.

  15. TheWizard says: Apr 22, 2010 8:15 PM

except of course that Joe knows a thing or two about the quarterback position.
Having been perhaps the best ever, and all that.
I’m interested in what he has to say.

    Lil’ Napoleon Florio says:
“…given that Montana like Kelly has never undertaken the thankless, grind-it-out job of scouting
WTF, pal? I grant you there is such a profession known as scouting but do they get it all right? Where did Mel Kiper, Jr have Ryan Leaf? So, with four f-ing Super Bowl rings, I’ll take Joe Montana over Mel Kiper, Jr., anytime.
Just ’cause you took NBC money doesn’t mean you have to take the company line.

  17. madnova says: Apr 23, 2010 2:31 PM

I tend to believe that when Florio was talking about “scouting”, he was referring to actual scouts, not draftniks.
    I could be wrong though.
