Madden cover man revealed

Simultaneously, all Saints fans and Vikings defensive Jared Allen have just shouted the “F” word.

Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Drew Brees will be on the cover of the Madden 11 game.

Brees achieved the honor via an online fan vote.  The other finalists were Allen and Colts receiver Reggie Wayne, whose indirect contribution to the new version of the game will be a revolutionary defensive back route-jumping animation.

Saints fans likely will be leery due to the so-called “Madden curse,” which supposedly results in injury or ineffectiveness for the cover athlete.  We generally don’t believe in such nonsense, but to the extent that the notion of a curse creeps into the back of the mind of the guy who is subject to it, who knows?

Last year, the Madden game featured Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald.  Polamalu was injured in Week One and played sparingly thereafter.  Fitzgerald had no ill effects; indeed, he somehow avoided what appeared to be a serious knee injury at one point.

Yeah you guys generally don’t believe things that have been consistently proven to be true. Fit in quite well at NBC.

Sweet. So this could help the worst to first in the NFC South. Brees gets hurt or plays bad saints finish 2nd or 3rd and the Bucs with that rediculously soft schedule wins the south!!!!! Just saying it could happen?!

Bad news for Brees. I hope Brees is too good a player to overcome the Madden cover page syndrome.

He has a milk dud on his face, maybe the two companies can do a cross promotion………….

Boring move. Drew seems like a good guy but I’d rather have Jared Allen.

  9. Dolfan34 says: Apr 22, 2010 8:06 AM

I would have gone Chris Johnson. Was he on the game last year?
Don’t get why Reggie Wayne would have been considered. No personality! It should have been between Brees, Johnson, Allen and maybe someone like Andre Johnson.

  10. Big BrEasy says: Apr 22, 2010 8:08 AM

The Big Breesy will break this curse once and for all…..
Its no wonder that a Saints player has to break this impossible feat.–>Mullet man can kiss my ass!

This “contest” is like a contest where you get to choose whether Jerry Rice, Charles Rogers, or Mike Williams gets to be in the Hall of Fame.

Wasn’t this once the Sports Ilustrated Curse?… How did this become the “Madden Curse”?
    I guess just a natural evolution…
    ahhh… whatever… Break a leg Brees!

Dolfan34, does a football player need a strong personality to have a photo on the cover of a videogame?

  19. gopherb24 says: Apr 22, 2010 8:31 AM

    @Gautam
Each Madden game comes out the summer before its title year. For example, Madden 10 came out last summer (the summer of ’09).

  20. BBB82 says: Apr 22, 2010 8:48 AM

They should just stop putting anyone on the cover. Just put “Madden 2010″ in big letters. They’ll still sell…

  21. DarkHorse81 says: Apr 22, 2010 8:52 AM

Don’t believe in curses but this Madden jinx been going strong for as long as I can remember which is about 6 or 7 years now ouch! so Florio believe in curses or not this Madden jinx is alive and kicking.

  22. nps6724 says: Apr 22, 2010 9:05 AM

Brees will overcome the Madden Curse. Before Brees, no Saints team had ever made the NFC Championship. No Saints team had ever made or won the Super Bowl. No Saint team had ever opened the season 13-0. No team had ever lost their final 3 games and won the Super Bowl. No team had ever gone through 3 consecutive Hall of Fame QBs to win the Super Bowl.
The Madden Curse is child’s play.

  23. The Real Shuxion says: Apr 22, 2010 9:10 AM

Just stick Madden on it holding a turkey sandwich.

  24. AllThat says: Apr 22, 2010 9:17 AM

Just put that Huge head of Madden on the cover. It would make the game look even bigger.
Maybe put Rex Ryan on the back?

  25. Guy Incognito says: Apr 22, 2010 9:33 AM

Please tell me he’s wearing his helmet. That mole is serious.

  26. purpleguy says: Apr 22, 2010 9:51 AM

Brees deserves it. It’s easier to look at the mole over the mullet anyhow.

  27. LightningLucci says: Apr 22, 2010 9:54 AM

Wayne didn’t deserve it for dropping that touchdown. That fargin’ bastage cost me the office Super Bowl box pool.

  28. antalicus says: Apr 22, 2010 10:09 AM

The cover should have been Drew Brees about to throw a pass and Jared Allen about to sack him.

  29. This is not news says: Apr 22, 2010 10:26 AM

Is the Madden Curse stonger than voodoo?

    Brees To Injury Facial Mole
    Saints Resign Palko

Jared is going to make that curse come true the first game they play…
