Montana talks Clausen

Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana doesn’t emerge from his shell too often, unless it’s to create Skechers shoe ads.  NFL.com got him talking about this year’s quarterback class, and Montana is well aware of the attitude concerns about fellow Notre Dame alum Jimmy Clausen.

He just doesn’t see them as a negative.

“He came in with a little bit more of an attitude than most people wanted, but if you don’t have an attitude, you don’t make it in the league,” Montana said of Clausen. “You can’t be timid and shy.
“Jimmy comes from a system that’s been run in the NFL, so he’s been under center and in the shotgun.  He has all those things that are intangible.  He’s a tremendous competitor,” added the eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback.  “The easiest way that you can find out about guys is the old fashioned way, and that’s to turn on the tape.  Watch the game, and can he play? Watch who he’s playing against, and watch the things he does. I think some teams lose sight of that.”
Seemingly, few observers question Clausen’s game film.  According to NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, Clausen possesses a top-ten skill set.  Apparently, though, Clausen is still in store for a Dan Marino-like slide.

  1. That’s what I’m talking about Joe. Watch the damn tape!!
    ‘Nation!!

  2. I look at Claussen and I see Jeff George without the George cannon. I think he can play, but I see a solid NFL quarterback and not a franchise quarterback.

  3. I think it’s funny that anyone would use a 50+ year-old dude to shill athletic sneakers. “Yes, these sneaks are GREAT for me getting my paper in the morning and shoo-ing away them gald-dang kids off my lawn!”
I’m not hating. I still think Joe Cool was the best QB in NFL history.

  4. I agree with Montana. It’s all about knowing who you are and accepting that. That is why Clausen and Tebow will do better than Bradford or McCoy. The first two have an unshakable sense of self.

  5. IF he’s that good, some smart team will take him near the top or trade up to get him. The Jets surprised alot of people jumping way up to grab Sancheez last year. All this talk of “he’s headed for a slide” is pure speculation…like pretty much everything else that’s been said about what’s going to happen in the draft, as though it were fact already.

  6. “He’s the Linebacker since Joe Montana”.
“Joe Montana was a Quarterback you idiot”.
    “I said Joe Montegna!”.

  7. Slow Joe
maybe they were going for that generation lol. But yeah I agree best ever by far.
I also agree with what Joe says about tape. Lol just watch the tape.

  8. @Slow Joe: the shows are the reason he’s making a comeback to the NFL bro. ALL shoes. Brought back all of his health and physical talents. He’s ready for another 10 years in the NFL, let’s see Favre top that.

  9. bottom line….
to be a great QB in the NFL you have to have a weird last name…
    think about it.

  10. The only team I hate more in college football than Notre Dame is Notre Dame coached by Charlie Weiss and quarterbacked by Jimmy Clausen.
Clausen is the steal of the draft and I can only dream that my team makes him its first pick.

  11. ” Apparently, though, Clausen is still in store for a Dan Marino-like slide.”
Umm, don’t you think all those teams that passed on Marino regret it to this day?

  12. My Chiefs should take Jimmy Clausen – he’s a far better QB already than mutt ca$$el… then again, I’m a far better QB than mutt…

  13. Got to stay healthy to play QB in the NFL. Thats why Bradford won’t make. Clausen will do just. He’s a tough kid.

  14. @ BwareDware
Yes they went to the same school. . .along with Wayne Gretzky’s kid and Will Smith’s son.

  15. Elway had a ton of swagger coming out of school. Turned out alright for him. Not comparing Clausen to Elway – I personally don’t like the kid – but a team would be stupid to be scared off by a confident attitude.
