Roethlisberger called sorority invitation "lawsuit waiting to happen"

Hours before Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the bathroom of a bar, witnesses say he expressed fear of a lawsuit in declining an invitation to a sorority house.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette quotes a witness as saying that a student asked Roethlisberger if he wanted to go back to her sorority house.

“Hell no,” Roethlisberger responded, according to the witness. “That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.”

It’s mind boggling that Roethlisberger could be cognizant of the danger of lawsuits and yet still act the way he acted that night. Did it never occur to him that providing alcohol to underage girls and then having sex with one of those girls could be a lawsuit waiting to happen?

The “lawsuit waiting to happen” statement would seem to suggest that after being sued by a woman in Nevada who accuses him of sexual assault, Roethlisberger decided he needed to change his behavior. And that he had a pretty warped view of what would constitute appropriate behavior.

Or maybe, those extremely drunk girls lied and made up the whole story????

  2. Bill In DC says: Apr 22, 2010 7:51 AM

Well, it depends on how much he had to drink in each circumstance, doesn’t it?
I suspect that the big helmet was not doing the thinking for Ben in Georgia, the little helmet was. I’ve noticed that the probability that the little helmet takes over for the big helmet is directly proportional to the blood alcohol level in males.

  5. stiller43 says: Apr 22, 2010 7:55 AM

First of all, if you’re talking about BEFORE he started drinking and AFTER he started drinking, there’s your decline in cognitive awareness of the severity of the situations he was putting himself in…that, or he was just to drunk to care.
Secondly, I like how you state that he was supplying alcohol to underage girls and having sex with one of them.
I don’t recall if it was ever proven that he KNEW they were underage, but one would think someone who’s going bar hopping doesn’t ask the age of every age he tried to buy a drink for. They would/SHOULD assume they are 21 because they got into the bar.
And by saying he had sex with one of them, you’re stating something a DA could provide almost zero evidence of rather than hearsay or he said/she said. If I were you, I’d stick to reporting the facts and not STATE he was doing something that couldn’t have been proven.
Imply it all you want, sure, but don’t state it as fact.

Mind boggling? Yeah only if you are accepting the drunken sorority girls’ statements to the police as fact.
This is getting ridiculous. Read Whitlock’s column yesterday.
The media (especially this site) is relaying the details from the police report as if it is a factual, minute-by-minute account of what went down in Milledgeville that night. In actuality it’s a collection of statements taken from a group of sorority girls who were extremely intoxicated, flirting heavily with BR’s group, and wearing stickers insinuating that they were “Down to F__k.”

    1. Followed Ben around all night bar to bar
    2. had “DOWN TO F**K” written on them
    3. Had sexual conversations with him
    4. Tried to lure him back to their sorority house
    5. Used fake id’s to get alcohol
    6. Got hammered out of their minds
    7. The accuser’s friends dragged her to police, when asked if she was raped she said “NO”
    8. When asked if she had sex she said “Not sure”
    9. Significant evidence in the police reports show they never had sex, let alone a rape occurred.
And Ben gets 6 games and loses millions…. What a crock!

Number 2 when you go to a bar they ID you so this tramp that was in there broke two laws she used a fake ID to get in and then she was drinking under age.. So what do you want Ben to do he is in a bar he expects that everyone is 21 because the bouncer’s check id’s so quit acting like he just brought went and brought liquor for the local middle school kids…He is guilty of stupidity thats it this girl was a whorah she got plastered had sex and felt dirty afterwards then went crying rape…She wasn’t crying when she was calling her self “DTF” huh?

The Pissburgh Rapists and their fans just can’t understand why the rest of the NFL and their fans are sickened by this classless franchise and their players.
    1) Ben will not be traded, they coddle rapists if they win.
    2) Leftwich will throw at least 3 of the first 4 interceptions.
    3) Ben will be back for the 5th game so the Looney family can sell jerseys and (emotional) opiates to thier masses.
    4) As soon as he starts winning again, the fans will be right behind him, as his team mates and true fans already are; becuase what’s a few rapes if gets you a stack of dough, a shiny trophy, and bragging rights to fans of other teams that your randomly-selelcted-team-of-choice-that-doesn’t-know-you-exist is better than theirs?
    5) By this point, all the people with sense will have moved on because rapists-apologists don’t care about anything but a sports team.
    6) Pissburgh gets his number 7 bronzed so the swarm of adoring fans can touch it on the way into the stadium, telling their children how raping actually helps teams win.

If I go to a nightclub, I assume that everyone there is of legal drinking age.
Most nightclubs now card EVERYONE, regardless of age. I still get carded, and I’m in my 40s. Chances are that these girls were misrepresenting their age, probably with false IDs. If that’s the case, what else are they capable of misrepresenting?
People act like football players are somehow mature and worldly beyond their years. Most of them are really still kids. Roethilsberger just turned 28 years old. What were all of you doing when you were in you mid to late 20s? Did you consider all 20 or 21 year old girls to be off limits to you?
If he indeed raped the girl, then he should be sent to prison. No special treatment what so ever. If the authorities can’t show that happened, then Goodell should drop the holier than thou attitude. That’s why we have courts of law in this country. If Roethlisberger didn’t knowingly break any laws, then none of it is anybody else’s business.

    5) Dixon be comes the starter and stinks it up. By this point, Steelers fans will lose all control and start rioting in the street.

Zero correlation to the Duke Lax case, but good try. Was Big Ben extradited by DNA sampling? No. He was never tested. If any reasonable being was in a similar situation yet was confident of their innocence, wouldn’t one be in favor of the DNA testing?
Duke Lax was confident of their innocence. Their DNA was tested. No one team member’s DNA showed up on the body of the accuser. Although, the scientist who conducted the DNA testing had his own DNA show up in the end results. That’s how sensitive the testing is.
Big Ben has a history of poor decision making (and that’s phrasing it nicely). Any 28 year old male, who chooses to party with college students on his birthday night (of all nights), is clearly not on a reasonable person. Hell, I’m a 23 year old recent college grad, and even I resent the thought of partying with college students – super senior!

You have to be a real dumbass to assume people in bars in college towns are all of age, or else you didn’t go to college- which I strongly suspect is true of many people here.
Second- you don’t have to be 21 to be in the bar in that state. Brightly colored, clearly visible wrist bands are given to those over 21- if BR cared, which he clearly didn’t, he could have checked.
And lastly, all of you apologists aren’t seeing the forest for the trees- what kind of creepy, wierd, pathetic, loser hangs out in a college bar when they are 28 YEARS OLD!?!?!?!?

Most nightclubs now card EVERYONE, regardless of age. I still get carded, and I’m in my 40s. Chances are that these girls were misrepresenting their age, probably with false IDs. If that’s the case, what else are they capable of misrepresenting?
People act like football players are somehow mature and worldly beyond their years. Most of them are really still kids. Roethilsberger just turned 28 years old. What were all of you doing when you were in you mid to late 20s? Did you consider all 20 or 21 year old girls to be off limits to you?”
    - Agreed, if you go to a bar you should assume that everyone is 21 or older… however just because she used a fake id doesn’t mean she wasn’t raped. All you supporters claim that since she used a fake id that ruins all of her credibility, well that is BS.
“What were all of you doing when you were in you mid to late 20s?”
    - I was not going to bars wearing creepy jester/devil or a devil dressed as a jester shirts sporting a undercut and walking around with my junk hanging out of my zipper.

hell no, most would love to go see a sorority hazing party!

  60. lol@vick says: Apr 22, 2010 9:54 AM

Ben’s reaction to the sorority invite says a lot about his true self.
At a sorority house, he would be on their turf, they would be in control of the situation, it would be familar grounds for them, and he might actually have to trust his hosts a bit.
Why would he do that? He already had a vip area at the bar, the owner/staff apparently had already submitted to his and his staff’s dominance there, he and his staff were in control.
Remember, rape isn’t always a sexual thing, often it is about power and control. Ben had it where he was, he wasn’t about to relinquish it, and it seems he further asserted his dominance when that young girl was sent to the back room where he was waiting.
Ben has a lot of issues, and I hope he gets the help he needs to funcition in a society where behavior like that is certainly not the norm

You know… I’ve watched as over the last few weeks, you have subjected yourself to beatdown after beatdown at the hands of these women, especially Deb.
..and so for all your shortcomings, besides not knowing when to quit, you now have to resort to this?
    Seriously?

  62. Switch625 says: Apr 22, 2010 10:03 AM

Not gonna dispute Ben is a dumbass and probably a jerk towards females, but that alone doesn’t add up to rape. You’re all forgetting the girl was pushed towards the police that night by her sorority sisters and when asked by the cop if she was raped, she said NO. Then she changed her story the next day. It may shock some of you but girls do lie about this stuff on occasion… Duke lacrosse, anyone?
Only a matter of time before you trolls find another person of stature to slander and bring down to your level.

I think Bens a DOUCHE but the problem I have is everyone jumping on him providing underage girls with alcohol. Those girls were BAR Hopping and already drinking, how does Ben know how old they are? They’re in the BAr drinking so he probably assumed they were 21. If the Bar checked their ID’s at the door and they’re drunk and under 21 why did they let them in?
Once again, BEns a DOUCHE and If he gets traded he gets traded but I’m tired of hearing how he gave underage girls alcohol when they shouldn’t of been in the bar to begin with.

You and the rest of the evangelists here are ragging on the Steelers like your team is comprised entirely of choir boys, which we all know they are not.
To what degree they’re not depends on the team, and being as you are obviously shamed to admit it, they must be pretty f*cking bad.
So, stop being a hypocrite for just one minute.

So, all this ridiculous bashing of the little girl he assaulted is kind of missing the point. What of it was your little girl this 250 pound entitled man trapped in the bathroom while his bodyguard stood watch. How does that feel, even if she probably should have known better ? Ben’s life is a pattern of reckless decisions that harm others. 2 super bowl rings don’t excuse such extreme stupidity over and over again. Steelers need to cut ties; their integrity and legacy is on the line.

Ben should have used much better judgment in the situation. The suspension is harsh, although justifiable as he does represent the NFL and is held to a higher standard. Ben will continue to be one of the best quarterbacks of this decade and will hopefully regain the respect of the city
It takes two to tango – regardless of the ages. My guess is that if the women had attended a birthday party prior to bar hopping, they most likely had consumed alcohol even before starting out.
Did the Sorority’s National Headquarters impose similar sanctions against the accuser and her other sorority sisters? Underage drinking, public intoxication, fake IDs and DTF nametags is unacceptable personal conduct for most sororities and negates the image of greeks at all Universities. They too are held to a higher standard. As an ex sorority officer and current chapter advisor, I can speak from experience that these women tend to get caught up in drama, drama, drama! And it usually results in tears and even fabrications. Reading through the women’s statements, it is clearly evident that this may be the case.
I’m not sure what really happened – but feel strongly one of the messages and key learnings to all is that excessive alcohol impairs judgment; regardless of your size, weight or what you ate earlier in the day and the binge drinking should be avoided.

Joe6606, did you ever think maybe Ben is lying you know that is possible. Just because he is supposed to be an upstanding citizen and an NFL QB doesn’t mean he can’t lie or isn’t going to lie. He was drunk just like she was and lets not forget the fact that this wasn’t the first time he was accused of this, in fact it was the 2nd time in one year. Who puts their selves in that position to begin with and why is a 28 year old NFL QB at a bar on or near a college campus anyway. This guy is an idiot and considering she filed a police report and then they investigated it obviously something showed up on the Rape Kit, otherwise they wouldn’t have investigated it and they would have filed charges against her for filing a false police report, way to think that one through bud.

“The “lawsuit waiting to happen” statement would seem to suggest that after being sued by a woman in Nevada who accuses him of sexual assault, Roethlisberger decided he needed to change his behavior.”
It would also suggest that, when somewhat sober, he knows enough to avoid certain situations. But when drunk out of his mind, he doesn’t.

Let me just say this first: Big Ben admitted to sexual contact and it is clear she was drunk with a .2 BAC so it is considered rape
Ok obviously none of you have been to a college bar… underagers get in all the time.
Second when u r that famous u have to be extra careful… he had 2 off duty cops that didnt do nothing about this? What a great job they did
Third, the Leftwich talk is just funny… thanks for brightening my day
Four, he is lucky he wasnt suspend for longer like the commish thought of doing
And to the guy that said number 7 is this year… boy I feel bad for Ben if he is accused 5 more times… after that u got to think he was guilty

I don’t think you’re going to get much in the way of support from guys on this (although if they don’t like the Steelers, they will gladly agree for the time being).
I don’t disagree with most of what you say, but when I was 28 years old I would have had no problem going to a sorority house with women all over the place. You’re getting into a very subjective area with this comment.

Why must this case be rehashed with each thread?
Roethlisberger has been suspended because he shouldn’t have been there in the first place. His bodyguards acted like thugs, while Roethlisberger himself played “rockstar,” all of which are violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
If a pro athlete needs paid drinking buddies disguised as hired “bodyguards,” then that pro athlete should keep his ass at home.
Actually, Roethlisberger should’ve been arrested in 2009: For impersonating an elite quarterback against the Chiefs, Raiders, Vikings, Bengals, Titans and Browns.
Just because the Steelers won some of those games, that doesn’t mean Roethlisberger played well.
My favorite scores from the ’09 season:
    Steelers defense 14 points.
    Steelers offense: 13 points.
    Vikings offense: 10 points.
    Vikings special teams: 7 points.
