Bears could be shopping linebackers for more picks

The Chicago Bears don’t hold a pick until the third round of the draft, at pick No. 75.  They could be trying to add to their five total selections by trading a veteran or two.

Though the popular candidate for a new home has been tight end Greg Olsen, a trio of linebackers could be on the block, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Per Biggs, Jamar Williams, Nick Roach, and/or Hunter Hillenmeyer could be moved.  Starters Brian Urlacher, Pisa Tinoisamoa, and Lance Briggs presumably are not on the block.

I’d move any of those guys..
Urlacher has been overrated his whole career and has been hurt the last two years..

Who would want these bench warmers? Can’t play in on injury-depleted Bears roster … better to go young and draft versus taking out Lovie Smith’s refuse.
Only 5 picks. Ha, ha. LOL. Which will Chicago have MORE of by the time of the 2011 draft? More draft picks … OR Jay Cutler Touchdowns.
    Ha, ha. Chicago. 2nd city.

Maybe they could have a take back of the Cutler trade

  4. JIM says: Apr 23, 2010 1:50 PM

What could you actually get for that group individually or combined ??

  5. BigBlueDeadHead says: Apr 23, 2010 1:50 PM

Or maybe some used cleats, half crumpled dixie cups and field chalk.

  6. Midway Monster says: Apr 23, 2010 1:54 PM

Im sure this wont amount to much with higher quality players going for like 5th rounders. Anything for Hillenmeyer would be a plus. Lets keep Williams and Roach on the roster Angelo…

  7. ChicagoJo says: Apr 23, 2010 1:54 PM

This makes too much sense for the Bears to pull it off. Prove me wrong, Angelo.
Hillenmeyer played very well in Urlacher’s spot last year, owning Adrian Peterson on MNF in December and consistently performing from the MLB spot. However, there’s no reason to hang on to him… he’s too old to take over for anyone and we have adequate young depth in case of injury(don’t forget Tim Shaw).
Jamar Williams has been developed at weak side since rumors of Brigg’s departure in 2006. He plays well on special teams and has shown good angles and hard hits when inserted on defense. However, his coverage skills are suspect. I think he’s worth more to another team like KC or TB trying to develop a LB core than he is to us as a reserve/ special teams guy. I’d miss him, though.
Roach is better than what we could get for him in a trade,; I believe we need to keep him to step in at strong or middle linebacker in case of an injury. The other two could command a 2nd round pick, or a move up from #75 and a lower rounder.
If that translates into a Guard and a Safety tonight, I’m all for it. Then the Bears can draft depth the rest of the weekend, and sign Otogwe away from the Rams and make a play for a veteran guard (feneca?) if available. We need experience atop the depth chart at those position, even if rookies do end up starting.

How has Urlacher been overrated his whole career? Past two years yet not much, but last yr played one game.
The reason talented players aka Holmes went for a 5th round pick is because he is an idiot off the field, regardless of how you perform on most teams want solid players who don’t get into trouble all the time.
I say Bears trade up and get Nate Allen-Safety
Or the most talented OL on the board.

  14. cbatchel says: Apr 23, 2010 2:10 PM

  22. Jabberwocky says: Apr 23, 2010 2:40 PM

They’re not scrubs at all. Actually, they all have substantial and productive time as starters. Williams had 20 tackle game last season, Roach can play all three LB positions on a 4-3 defense, and Hillenmeyer had a good solid year. I don’t think they would yield more than a 5th rounder, but it’s worth moving one of them.
“That Gaines Adams trade turned out great one, huh?”
Watch out for that karma smack when you’re not expecting it. Sorry excuse for human being.

  24. JayBot says: Apr 23, 2010 2:44 PM

Unless there is a safety sitting at #75 that is a near deadlock to start, the Bears need to trade down, generate as many additional picks as possible, and go for quantity hoping for a couple of hits. If that means throwing in a back-up LB or trading out of the 3rd round, they have to do it. There are just too many holes to go into camp with only 5 guys drafted on the last 2 days.

    wow at some of you.
Roach and Williams would START on at least 60 percent of the teams in the NFL.
Urlacher is overrated? That’s idiotic. He was hurt last year and the year before played injured (neck/back) and still finished w/ second most tackles behind briggs. get your facts straight.
I’m all for moving olsen or the lb’s or a combo of both if we can net OG and Safety. But no giving up next year’s picks..

@GhostOfArtRooney, save for trades, how many of the 7 draft picks per year per team actually pan out? the bears track record in the draft under angelo is abysmal, but assuming every draft pick works out is mild to moderate football retardation.
as a GM, i would trade a draft pick for a proven NFL player 100 out of 100 chances. every round and every pick in the draft is a pure crap shoot.

owning Adrian Peterson on MNF in December and consistently performing from the MLB spot.
Please elaborate. Adrian has never been “owned” by another player during his entire career, much less by a second tier linebacker from the shittiest team in the division. Do you consider stripping the ball while a teammate facemasks him “owning” him? Did Hillenmeyer “own” him on either TD Peterson scored or during the 07 228 game?
    I anxiously await your response.
    Dumbass.

  35. ChicagoJo says: Apr 23, 2010 3:20 PM

    @chickenragnarpartdeux
First off, if you want to respond to a long comment with a one liner why copy and paste the entire posr (see above)? Also, which LB do you think I overvalue? Just an honest take on players from a fan whose seen every snap they’ve played in the NFL… Granted, I was only really commenting on these guys’ upside but I don’t see a lot of counterpoints in this thread outside of “these guys are on the bench, they suck”.
If you really understood how bad Bears management was you’d know there’s a lot of talent and depth here, which onlyunderscores the lake thereof in the secondary.
It’s easy to come onto a message board and talk smack, just like it would be easy for me to say the bears will win this, have the best defense, blah blah blah. I tend to think on blogs and message boards there are two type of people, those with insight and those who don’t have friends to talk to about sports so they just run their mouth on any available outlet.
Believe it or not Williams and Roach are both starting material who continously improve and Hillenmeyer would bring a good veteran presence to a lot of defenses out there. The trade market sucks this year though, so even if Angelo had the moxy to pull this off I doubt a lot of teams would bite. I guess we’ll see.

Bears need to trade Olsen for a mid 2 and draft Taylor Mays

  37. ChicagoJo says: Apr 23, 2010 4:02 PM

    @Manbearpig
Well there’s a good point about 2007. I like how the only thing you have to say is a refernece to Peterson’s greatest game against the Bears 3 years ago. He’s actually worked us over in a few games since then, as recently as November. But I’m sure you wouldn’t be able to tell me anything about those games, without looking it up.
Elaboration: I don’t remember any facemask penalties on either of the balls that Hillenmeyer stripped out of Petersons slippery hands. That’s like complaining an offensive hold wasn’t called on your boy’s touchdown run… or whining that LeBron travels like everyone else in the league. Whatever happened, happened, and your smack talk can’t take away the plays that were made.
Fact of the matter is that Peterson lost two fumbles and got run out of bounds instead of picking up critical yards at the end of the 4th and in overtime, which ended up costing the Vikes the game. Glad to know you’re still not over it, probably still whining about the NFC championship game too. By the way, Chris Williams owned Jared Allen that game also.
Call Hillenmeyer second tier if you like, but he’d be a starter on plenty of NFL teams. And go ahead and call the Bears the worst team in the divison, and it’s obvious that you either know sh*t about football or are just trying to dog the Bears.
    Dumbass

As a long-time Bears fan, Urlacher is good, but shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Butkus or Singletary. He doesn’t hit with anywhere near he ferocity of most starting MLB’s today, and he’s not as instinctive as many either; however, his speed allows him to cover his mistakes. Although Urlacher may be the face of the Bears, I’ll take Lance Briggs over him any day of the week.
