Bengals sign Mike Nugent

On a day that we’d expect to be all-draft, all the time (with a little Ben Roethlisberger mixed in), we’ve actually got a free agent signing to pass along: The Cincinnati Bengals have signed free agent kicker Mike Nugent.

The signing is something of a homecoming for Nugent, who’s from Centerville, Ohio and went to Ohio State.

The Jets’ second-round pick in the 2005 NFL draft, Nugent suffered a quadricep injury in the first game of the 2008 season that ended his tenure in New York, and he bounced around the league with the Buccaneers and Cardinals in 2009.

In Cincinnati he’ll compete with Dave Rayner, the other kicker on the Bengals’ roster. Bengals special teams coach Darrin Simmons says he’s high on Nugent.

This is a guy that was highly regarded coming out in the draft,” Simmons told Bengals.com, “and if we can get him back where he was before the injury, he’s a very interesting guy.”

how does a KICKER as good as Nuge was, go to hell so easily.

This is an upgrade over Shayne Graham.Graham had a great percentage but was a choker which reminds me of their kicker before Graham, Neil Rackers who is the poster boy of chokes.

Good move. A little roster competition is never a bad thing. Good to see we’re moving on from Graham. He was awesome… except when it really mattered.

Yeah this is the nail in the coffin for Shayne. I love it. Seeya Shayne! I hear the steelers may need a kicker. You’d fit right it with liking underage girls. You and Ben can hang out a lot!

If Graham had made those 2 easy shots in the playoff game, it would have at least been even.
But when Graham messed up, everyone gave up.

Still should draft Leigh Tiffin in the 7th.

Good luck with that dude. He was AWFUL for the Bucs last year. Mike Nugent would probably better imitating Ted Nugent than an NFL kicker.

Nugent will be fine back at home. He does have one of the strongest legs I have ever seen. He kicked two 55 yard game winners at OSU and one of them would have been good from 70.
