Eagles use McNabb pick for Nate Allen

The player forever linked in Philly to the legacy of quarterback Donovan McNabb now has a name.  (Well, he already had a name.  We just now know what it is.)

It’s South Florida safety Nate Allen.

The Eagles traded up in round one, and it was believed they’d pick safety Earl Thomas.  Instead, they took defensive end Brandon Graham and waited until round two to try to file the hole created in 2009 when Brian Dawkins bolted for Denver.

Allen also could play corner, and possibly will start his career in the nickel or dime package.

Good height and size. Don’t know much about him but at least we drafted a safety.

How can you post the result of the “Donovan McNabb pick” and fail to mention that Nate Allen wore #5 in college?

Well he’d be a zone corner, and the Eagles D is mostly man to man. He’ll be playing safety. For goodness sake they have Marlin Freakin Jackson and Macho Harris. Nate Allen is already better than Jackson, a CB with the Colts. I do have some faith in Macho, though. He contained Tony G during the Falcons game. It was great to see the Eagles D finally not get ripped apart by a TE. Nate Allen was good in coverage, so I expect him to fit in nicely

We had Earl Thomas in our grips and let him slide. Now we had Taylor Mays in our hands and he slid out of Andy’s hands like the grease on his cheesesteak. I”m so pissed, I wanted Taylor Mays. The kid is going to be a freak of nature.

He’s a fringe first rounder. Great pickup.

i dont like that he is a weak tackler. this is one of those picks you need to trust organizations on. i would have like a trong lineback instead.

Allen is graded higher than Mays. Mays is a better tackler, but Allen is a better cover corner/safety.
Watching the tape on Mays (get burned) and Allen not, I am glad we drafted Allen.
For those down on the Graham pick you should do your research, he is Dwight Freeney

Who is the best CB left in the draft?

  13. Bruisersrevenge says: Apr 23, 2010 10:51 PM

Hes not a weak tackler. If u watch the tape on this kid he actually tackles really good. He just doesnt hit that hard. He is going to fit in great with the eagles. He will have a way better career then mays. He can cover good, and he plays good man and zone. Mays will be good in the nfl but he still needs to learn how to cover players 1 on 1

scrapdog, don’t be upset that they didn’t go with Taylor Mays, he has bust written all over him… What is the point of a DB who can’t cover, plus he’s a moron, and a diva.
I was a little confused after they passed on Earl Thomas, but after reading some scouting reports on Graham and listening to some of the nfl analysts, I’m pretty confident in him.
Nate Allen does have some upside, a lot more then Mays anyway… You’ll see.. Mays will be a huge NOTHING

dgantz.. you will be the same idiot wearing a Graham jersey after you see how much of a beast the kid will be for the team.. way to open your mouth before you know what you’re saying, i bet you havent watched ANY of the players we drafted..

The Eagles didnt trade Mcnabb to get Nate Allen they trade Mcnabb so Kolb could start. Acquiring the 37th pick is just what the Eagles needed to do to make the move make sense right now. The pick is more of an excuse to make the move happen then the reason.
So Kevin Kolb is the player who will be forever linked the Donovan Mcnabb. Nate Allen is just the consilation prize.
Dont get me wrong I think Nate Allen will be great for the Eagles but to say he was the reason Mcnabb was traded and not Kolb is absurd.

    Yeah. Taylor Mays can’t play.

Your reading comprehension needs work. Nobody said Allen was the reason McNabb was traded. He is called the “McNabb Pick” simple because he was player drafted using the pick they acquired for McNabb. I’m really not sure how that could be confusing.
