Kirk Morrison is on the way out of Oakland

The NFL is often a zero sum game.  So with the Raiders drafting their middle linebacker of the future in Rolondo McClain, their middle linebacker of the last few years is likely on his way out.

Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune says Kirk Morrison will be cut or traded.  He’s due $2.51 million, which is too much for a player that’s ultimately depth now.

Perhaps Morrison isn’t as good as his production indicates, but he can help a team.  We’d think another team would give up a late-round pick for him.

The selection of McClain indicates a new direction for the Raiders defense.  The team plans to use more “multiple” fronts with an extra linebacker next year, as we guessed last night.

Head coach Tom Cable also admitted the team would have taken Russell Okung or Trent Williams if they were available to him.

this has New York Giants written all over it. unless they draft a MLB with their 2nd rounder tonight.

  2. WarrenMoonGOAT says: Apr 23, 2010 3:43 PM

why not keep both…because when has money ever been a problem for Al Davis
he’s paying Jamarcus two times as much as what Kirk will be making

  3. joshington says: Apr 23, 2010 3:44 PM

    He’ll be a Giant.

  4. RelentlessIV says: Apr 23, 2010 3:46 PM

The run defense has been bad since he firsted started as MLB 5 years ago. If you can’t stop the run we’ll draft someone who can. Hopefully we get a 3rd or 4th for him today. That goes for Thomas Howard too.

    Attention Jerry Reese:
Fix the mistake that you made last night and make this happen.

Personally, it’s sad to see Kirk Morrison and perhaps Thomas Howard become obsolete because they’ve worked so hard for us over the last couple years. Those two have been one of the few bright spots on our team during the difficult years. Well…they’re still difficult right now but it’s been much, much worse.
I know we’re trying to help our defense, but I just don’t see Kirk as the weak link on that side of the ball. He doesn’t need replacing. The biggest problem with our defense is that out our OFFENSE can’t sustain a drive. How do you remedy that? Get a competent QB (Is this Gradkowski? Perhaps) and fix the offensive line. Those things need to be addressed in the later rounds.
I’d be happy to see us go 4-3 permanently, but apparently we’ll only run it occasionally. Not looking forward to seeing Morrison or Howard leave Oakland, though.

Loved his passion, and he is a Raider fan, but this was needed.

  8. raybin says: Apr 23, 2010 3:48 PM

At this point, all Morrison can probably bring is a 6th rounder. Or maybe part of a deal to move up a few spots to grab someone they really want.

  9. jj jones says: Apr 23, 2010 3:50 PM

Rolando McClain is not a typical Al Davis pick. Productive and a great leader. Maybe Al is no longer in control.

  10. tombrookshire says: Apr 23, 2010 3:51 PM

Eagles should trade a late round pick for him for insurance if (when) Bradley is injured again.

  11. theTRUTHwillSETuFREE says: Apr 23, 2010 3:52 PM

I’m gonna miss Kirk, he’s a True Raider and a good Middle Linebacker. But we need greatness in the Middle. I think that’s what McClain gives us. Sad to see Kirk go, but very excited about McClain’s future. Good luck Kirk, the Nation will miss you.

  12. JakeTheSnake says: Apr 23, 2010 3:53 PM

Let’s just say him going somewhere is in his “cards”.

  13. Tcostant says: Apr 23, 2010 3:55 PM

I agree – the Giants should offer their 5th round pick for him. He’s better than anyone they will draft there.

  14. GirthyOne says: Apr 23, 2010 3:57 PM

Any of you Raider fans understand that the defensive line is first and foremost the run stoppers. LBs fill the gaps and chase.
CompanyCalls405 is also correct when he asserts that a better offense helps make the defense better.
This is why your team is perennially bad, you go into a draft needing DL, OL and WR more than anything else, then you draft an LB that you really don’t need BEFORE you trade the one you have.
Someone will certainly take Morrison off your hands and be thrilled to do it. Maybe the Giants.
Jaydub, hasn’t Reese earned your respect on drafting yet? Wow.

  15. twinkletoes says: Apr 23, 2010 3:59 PM

Not so fast. If Undead Al goes for a Terrence Cody in round two, then that could mean they’re transitioning to the 3-4. Seymour’s skills would be better utilized in that setup. Even though Kelly is an overpaid three technique, he could probably transition to a 3-4 DE. And Shaughnessy has the size to play a role here as well. The Raiders look like they’re stocking up on bigger LBs (Wimbley, McClain) and converting guys into OLBs (Scott, Groves?). Morrison could then paired with McClain on the inside, with Wimbley and Scott on the outside. The odd man out would then be Thomas Howard. Either way, it would be sad to see either Morrison, Howard or both leave, as they have been above average for this defense.
I’m disappointed that there’s been no scuttlebutt of Undead Al sniffing around Jammal Brown or Albert Haynesworth. Pro Bowlers with decent tread left on their tires.

  18. gobs56 says: Apr 23, 2010 4:02 PM

    @RelentlessIV-
If your thinking about cutting him how do you expect to get a 3rd or 4th? We will throw you a 7th and be done with it.

  19. Will says: Apr 23, 2010 4:03 PM

Actually, Cable said they would have taken Suh, McCoy, Okung or Williams if any of them were available at #8 BUT they expected all of them to be gone just like they were. They did not think it would be worth it to trade up to get any of them. Makes sense, the Raiders have lots of needs. If the Raiders take Cody at #39, then Morrison might stay as a starting ILB in a 3-4 base D.

  20. Bill says: Apr 23, 2010 4:05 PM

Please Jerome, we need a LB. The other snapperheads that our on the roster belong on Florio’s other posting with the no name Bears, LBs?
    Go Big Blue!

  21. Bob S. says: Apr 23, 2010 4:06 PM

giants will still draft a linebacker even if they want morrison. morrison could have been had for a 3rd round pick i believe with no takers raiders will be lucky to get a #7 next year. he sure looks like his chances of being cut are greater?

    Damn!!!

  23. Ray Guy says: Apr 23, 2010 4:07 PM

Kirk was one of the weak run defense links. Sure he made a LOT of tackles. Unfortunately, they were 8 yards from the line of scrimmage. I really liked him as a person though. We went to the same high school and both played football there (many years apart)
Good luck to him where ever he goes.

  24. Yash says: Apr 23, 2010 4:09 PM

please PLEASE Mr. Reese….go out and grab this guy. You waited for McClain and he went early. You’re going to wait for Lee and he’ll be gone. You’ll be forced to reach for Spikes in the 2nd round and cost us a shot at grabbing Price. I’m begging you, go get him.

  25. Redleg says: Apr 23, 2010 4:10 PM

    @CompanyCalls405,
I like both of them also, BUT you can’t blame the offense for the defense’s inablility to stop the run FOR YEARS NOW.
If you are going to be a Raider fan you have to admit the following:
    1) That LBs are a dime a dozen in Al Davis’ mind.
    2) The fact that the Raiders defense isn’t good…Really hasn’t been good for awhile now.
    3) Other NFL teams aren’t going to come down to the Raider talent level anytime soon so the Raiders HAVE to blow up parts of the defense and try and get BETTER players in.
    AND LASTLY
    4) Al Davis has too much invested in QB/RB/WR right now to blow up the entire offense…That leaves the defense to take the fall.
Howard and Morrison may be productive on other teams (like Danny Clark and Greg Beikert before them), but it is simply time to move on and get young and fresh talent in…NFL stands for “NOT FOR LONG” for most players and Morrison and Howard fit that mold.
I am all for the Raiders going to the 3-4 and radically changing make up of their defensive roster…The have to do SOMETHING to turn the tide of SEVEN STRAIGHT LOSING SEASONS!
Or is it eight? I forget it has been so long.

  26. Legend says: Apr 23, 2010 4:11 PM

Morrison is a solid character player, a hard worker and a good locker-room guy. What he lacks in run-stopping ability he makes up for in hustle.
If he does go, we’ll miss his presence.

  29. DB26 says: Apr 23, 2010 4:18 PM

    Raiders fans…
    A) Good pick with McClain
    B) Good move on Wimbley IF he is going to play with his hand down
    C) You are WAY over valuing Morrison and Howard. Howard will net you MAX a 4th, more likely a 5th. Morrison will get you a 6th, 5th MAX.
I am a Browns fan and would offer a 5th and 6th to get both of them. Oakland would be smart to accept. If not, they are likely cut

Hey “genuis” by the time the Raiders selected at #8 both the top two DTs and top OTs were gone and they sure as hell weren’t going to take ANOTHER Wide Reciever at #8
Anyone they would have taken by that point would have been a reach also (Clausen, Davis, Bulaga, Campbell, etc.).
McClain filled a need and he has the intangibles (leadership, dedication to film study) that the Raiders SORELY need on defense.

Have you watched a lot of Raider football? I would probably say no. So maybe you should listen to what all the Raiders fans are telling you. Kirk is a good LB, but he’s extremely weak against the Run. Most of his tackles come in pursuit(5-10 yards past the line of scrimmage). Also Cable and the Raiders wanted Suh, McCoy, Williams, and Okung. They were all off the board then. Davis, Iupati, and Boluga were the next best 3 at OL. But there was a huge drop off in talent from Okung to Davis. With McClain we got the #1 LB in the nation, a proven leader, great work ethic, and someone who will be able to get in the backfield and stuff the run. In my opinion the Raiders made a terrific selection and got what is going to be the centerpiece of our defense for years to come! Just sayin…

Of course he has. I’m very much a fan of his
However, I think he royally shit the bed with the JPP pick. At 15, you take someone who will contribute immediately, and this kid is raw as hell and nowhere near ready to play in the NFL. The Giants have much bigger holes to fill other than the DE position.

That’s great and all but you obviously never watched the guy play if you don’t realize that he never filled the right gaps and he overpursued constantly.

  41. dcrespo24 says: Apr 23, 2010 5:38 PM

you guys are trippin’. Kirk will likely move over to outside linebacker – just like the beginning of last year until Ricky Brown got hurt.
Also, the Raiders often use a hybrid 3-4. In which case Kirk would be the Sam with Rolando as the Mike.
    Raise your football IQ

  42. Onderin says: Apr 23, 2010 5:45 PM

Why the hell are you guys acting so sad Morrison is getting shipped somewhere? He wasn’t as good as his production and people will see that once finds himself somewhere else. He gets trucked at the point of attack, can’t shed blocks, and has never been good against the run.
When you’re the leading tackler on a bad team, that doesn’t make you good. It just makes you the most productive by default.
Giants will be in for a rude awakening if they trade for him.

  43. dcrespo24 says: Apr 23, 2010 5:53 PM

    Also,
Morrison is not going to be cut since the Raiders tendered him. If we were going to cut him, the Raiders would have simply released him without the tender sheet.
WHEN IS THE LAST TIME PFT WAS RIGHT ABOUT ANY RAIDER RUMOR?????
According to PFT, Nnamdi was supposed to be a jet, Cable was supposed to be fired, Ben was supposed to be a Raider, McFadden was supposed to be a Lion, and the Raiders were going to draft a guard with the 8th pick.
Seriously – PFT has no credibility when it comes to the Raiders.

  44. joetoronto says: Apr 23, 2010 6:13 PM

GirthyOne: If you watched and keyed in on Morrison during those big runs the defense gave up, you’d see that he overran his gap almost every time.
On top of that, he just can’t shed a block, even from TE’s.
Us Raider fans know that for the most part, the run defense was fine, many tackles were actually made in the backfield. But every once in a while, they’d give up a big one and on every one of those big runs, Morrison was out of the picture completely.
Having said that, there is a pace for Morrison in a 3-4 look. I would play him outside though, he’s just not cut out for the middle at all.
