Bears draft a quarterback, Dan LeFevour

Dan LeFevour put up video game numbers as a four-year starter at Central Michigan, and the Chicago Bears want to see if he has the talent to be a starter in the NFL some day as well.

The Bears spent their sixth-round draft pick on LeFevour, a player who will now have some time to develop behind Jay Cutler.

Although a sixth-round pick on a quarterback with potential doesn’t seem like too big a risk, it’s an odd choice for Chicago. The Bears didn’t have first- or second-round picks because of the trades for Jay Cutler and Gaines Adams, and with their third-, fourth- and fifth-round picks the Bears went with defense. So LeFevour, who almost certainly won’t get on the field as a rookie, is the Bears’ only offensive draft pick.

But anyone who watched LeFevour in college can understand why the Bears like his upside. He finished his college career with 12,905 passing yards and 102 touchdowns, and with an additional 47 rushing touchdowns, he has the most total touchdowns in NCAA football history.

LeFevour grew up in the Chicago area and said he was thrilled to be a Bear.

“Being able to put on the navy blue and orange just means a lot to me,” LeFevour said in an interview with ESPN’s Trey Wingo, a framed Walter Payton jersey behind him. “I don’t have a doubt in my mind that this is the place I’m supposed to be.”
