Colbert: Roethlisberger deserves chance to make things right

In the clearest words we’ve heard out of Pittsburgh yet, Steelers G.M. Kevin Colbert said Ben Roethlisberger deserves a chance to turn things around.

“We can’t defend the behavior and actions as an organization and we
won’t, but we do defend his opportunity to make right, and I think
that’s the right thing to do,” Colbert said.

The answer was in response to a question about whether trade talks are behind the franchise.  We may find out in the coming weeks if Roethlisberger was ever close to getting dealt, but it looks like that window of opportunity has passed.

“This guy has helped us win two championships and he’s made some
mistakes,” Colbert said, “but he also deserves the opportunity to
rectify those mistakes and we stand behind his opportunity to do that.”

These words, followed by Roethlisberger’s statement Monday, show the Steelers are trying to move on.

But alas, she won’t get that chance.

He allegedly rapes two girls among other things and he deserves a chance? If he would have been a third string QB or a kicker, would Colbert say the same?
In other words, if you play good on the field, everything you do OFF the field is forgiven.

  6. Deb says: Apr 24, 2010 8:20 PM

The Steelers are trying to move on?? No kidding. The only window of opportunity that’s passed is the opportunity for Schefter, La Canfora, and the rest of the gossiping biddies that pass for sports “journalists” these days to restore a shred of their credibility. If you want Steelers info, try checking Bouchette.
The Steelers were never trying to deal Roethlisberger. He’s their franchise QB, he’s made some mistakes, but despite the public lynching, he hasn’t committed any crimes under a Constitution that actually requires proof of guilt. The Rooneys will give him a chance to work out his issues. If he can’t, then he’ll be gone. Until then, expect to see him in our fifth game unless Goodell plans taking this hypocritical charade to the limit.

I have to say, this is the only article I have read about this nonsence that makes ANY sense at all !! of course he needs to be given the chance to make things right ! why wouldn’t he be ? everyone else in the world that makes mistakes is allowed that opportunity, as should be !! and this girl also is to be given the opportunity to make things right in her world, after all, she was part of the issue that night! so let’s get on with it…give them both redemtion (if so earned) and play ball !! and as far as Florio goes ? go ahead and jump !!

  12. tombrookshire says: Apr 24, 2010 8:35 PM

Please, don’t talk about what BR deserves. How has BR earned the right to make things right? I don’t see how he has done anything but deny and then apologize because he was told to do so. When the pundits and Andy Reid claimed that Mike Vick deserved a second chance, I gotta question how your actions track with a sincere desire to change. Vick did just enough to quell the anger in Philly. Has BR performed any public service, came out in support of respectful treatment of women, or even apologized apart from a statement prepared by a PR flack. Now he deserves the benefit of the doubt somehow. He has won two championships and he is an elite QB, and a celebrity. So naturally he deserves special treatment and consideration from NFL fans, and the City of Pittsburgh. By your deeds are you known. All he deserves is what his behavior has earned him. How long will it take for a repeat performance of his boorish behavior?

  13. CrazyWolfe says: Apr 24, 2010 8:36 PM

“This guy has helped us win two championships…
Sorry, this statement isn’t quite accurate. The Stealers has a lot more help than Rapistberger in winning that first Super Bowl.

  14. TasteTheSteel says: Apr 24, 2010 8:37 PM

The girl didn’t say No, they didn’t even have sex. Girl told police she wasn’t raped, but after some urging by a sorority sister that didn’t like Ben, she changed her story. She said they had unprotected sex, yet with the rape kit could not find any DNA even remotely resembling a male. Tell me how is that even feasible? Ben did nothing criminal. Calling the dude a rapist is just ignorate. He does deserve a chance to make things right considering the media has blown the thing out of proportion. The only thing I’m ashamed of as a Steeler fan is the fact that there are so many stupid Steeler fans who want him gone.

  15. blitzburgh1 says: Apr 24, 2010 8:39 PM

I guess no only means no if you want Ben to be guilty of something. No apparently no longer means no when she told the police that no, she wasn’t raped.
    How convenient.

  18. silverback says: Apr 24, 2010 8:45 PM

Actually JaggedMark, the girl did say no. When asked if she was raped by police, and if she knew if they had sex or not, and when she was asked if she wanted to press charges. All three times she said NO. If you read the full police reports it is doubtful they even had sex, let alone rape occurred.

  22. syge says: Apr 24, 2010 8:58 PM

In the absence of actual eye witness accounts, what fills the blank spaces left by the inconsistency in witness testimony?
    The answer: previous bias.
It’s a fact of life, people who want him to be guilty of a crime will rationalize it, as will people who love the guy.
I think it’s better to be realistic, even if you’re a Steelers fan. Sexual assault allegations are rarely just fabricated, so I tend to believe the guy is a sleezebag, but there was enough inconsistency with all the statements and (lack of evidence) that at the least the man deserves a chance to redeem himself.
In the eyes of many he never can, but I think there are things he could do (in the form of donations, speaking to kids, etc) that could massively outweigh the harm he has allegedly caused. Florio made a good point in an earlier article which basically said even if it’s not that sincere, it’s still doing some good.

What did he do with that chance? He went out and raped someone else. Sorry Steelers, as unpleasant as it may seem to you all, the entire world now knows that your quarterback is a serial rapist. And that can of worms will never be closed, no matter how badly the Steelers organization wish it could be.

  30. Rasta says: Apr 24, 2010 9:26 PM

  32. DirtDawg55 says: Apr 24, 2010 9:46 PM

Well, edgarpoe, Ray Lewis allegedly committed manslaughter and actually admitted to the commission of a crime – obstruction of justice – and he got a second chance. Michael Vick went to jail and got a second chance. So did Donte Stallworth. Big Ben, on the other hand, hasn’t even been charged with a crime never mind convicted of one.
Does that mean he’s a saint? No. He clearly is not. But if only “nice guys” could play in the NFL I don’t think any team could stock a 54 roster. Including the Ratbirds.
If you want to talk about whether guys deserve a second chance or not you might want to look no further than your own roster.

Anyone else would be gone most likely in prison, but he’s white and won two SB’s so he deserves another chance.

  36. Raider Pride says: Apr 24, 2010 9:57 PM

Ruthlessraper should be absolved of his rapings… after all, like the spin-doctors and Steelers brass (in full damage control mode) will tell you, “he should be able to rectify those mistakes”. Mistakes… like rape? Face it Steelers fan, the face of your franchise is an overweight, overrated, mullet-having rapist… and if it wasn’t for football, Ben would probably live next-door to you swamp-donkey Steeler fans in the same filth-ridden trailer-park hell-hole that all of you rape-enabler Ruthlessraper fans live in. Enjoy those championships, and keep your daughters locked up (especially before game 7 of the upcoming year, because Ben will be free to roam the streets during his suspension, and, no doubt, forcing some penetration somewhere… that is, after all, who he is.)

Colbert finally said what should have been said by the Steelers earlier. The trade rumors are done now, and the organization will stand behind Ben thrugh this incident, like they should after all he has done for them. Now, Ben just needs to behave and all will be well.
And about this “she said no” chant. From my perspective, I don’t think she knows what she said that night. I wonder why her facebook page was taken down so fast, maybe she said what she wanted to do or HOPED to do with Ben that night. We will never know. But wow, are you kidding me? Does anyone actually think some chant will stop Ben from throwing for about 30 TDs this year to bolster his position as an elite QB? Don’t you think he will be coming out breathing fire, and the sure way to shut up idiots is to beat the crap out of their team?
What do these morons think, that the Steelers will roll over because some idiots are chanting? That is laughable! The way I see it, since in most away stadiums the Steeler fans outnumber the home team fans anyway, those that chant will be out outchanted with HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!
I am trying my damndest to get tix for the 10/17 Browns game, and I will be wearing my No.7 jersey. Btowns shouldn’t even bother to show up, since Ben will be out to make a statement that day about his QB skills.
I think a more honest chant is: She said she didn’t know! She said she didn’t know! She said she didn’t know!

  60. Yggep2010 says: Apr 24, 2010 11:41 PM

Ben gives them that…so he can rape & pillage all he wants, those jackholes will have his back!

Wow, the haters are really getting out of hand.
Their seething hatred and jealousy for anything Steelers related has reached a new fever pitch. By the time Ben runs out of the tunnel for the first time and kicks their teams ass for the [x]th time, their heads will explode. They’re losing what little self control they ever had.
Some of these idiots sounds as though they’re one cracker away from full blown violence. And since most of them still live at home in mom’s basement, that means they’re going to kill their mothers.

DTF sound familiar? That’s what the girl caught up in this scandal is all about! So quit demonizing Ben for the only person at fault here when the accuser is by no means an every Sunday church goer! She is 20 in a glib for god sakes! Ben should be guilty of contributing to a minor! Where is the outcry for Stallworth “KILLING” a man In a drunk driving accident? yeah, and “she said no”
way to cherry pick the official story you rape-enablers.
” the police officer’s, he said, ‘Did he rape you?’ And her response was, ‘No.’ Next, the first officer said, ‘Did they have sex?’ And she said, ‘Well, I’m not sure.’ And then – and I’m giving you the spectrum here – we go to her first statement in her own handwriting, and I think it’s still pretty clear she was still intoxicated at that point; this was down at the Milledgeville police station. And she said in her own handwriting, ‘I don’t know if this is a good idea. He said It’s OK. He had sex with me.’ Then the progression will go to her second statement, in her own handwriting, and this is probably 12, 13 hours later, again at the Milledgeville police department. She’s sober by now and coherent, and in her own words she said, and this is in her handwriting, ‘I told him it wasn’t OK. No. We don’t need to do this. And I proceeded to get up and try to leave. I went to the first door I saw, which happened to be a bathroom. He followed me into the bathroom and shut the door behind him. I still said no. This is not OK. And he then had sex with me. He said it was OK.’ And I’ll give you one more at the hospital: The doctors and nurses have in quotes, and this will be coming from the victim, ‘A boy kind of raped me.’ ”

    1) you can’t be considered a ‘serial rapist’ without actually raping someone (seriously)
    2) the dude (BR) is dumb to put himself in these situations, but that doesn’t make him a rapist.
    3) indeed… the girl said ‘no’. ‘No’ when asked if she was raped and ‘no’ when asked if they even had sex. So.. how in the world is everyone insistent that he ‘raped’ the girl when sex (allegedly) didn’t even occur?
    4) those of you trying to burn BR at the stake are crazy

    MSWRavens says:
Second, it’s also wrong to say he has committed no crime. He has not been proven to have committed any crime…
    ———————————————-
Obviously, you failed civics. In the United States, people are innocent until proven guilty. Period.
However, in the two formal accusations brought against Ben Roethlisberger, the evidence also supports not-guilty findings. People are tired of me mentioning that I’m a rape survivor. Me, too. But it seems necessary to point out that it’s a crime I take personally and seriously. I’m not getting my info from PFT and TMZ.
In the Nevada case, I’ve read everything that’s been filed with the court, going over the accuser’s complaint multiple times. In Georgia, I’ve listened three times to the full 71-minute press conference from the DA, and I’ve gone over multiple witness statements–not just the titillating excerpts from the accuser’s final statement.
The Nevada story is long and convoluted. But the main point is that the accuser’s own text messages that she sent AFTER Ben was supposed to have raped her contradict her story. In them she talks about looking forward to seeing him again and jokes that another guy she’s dating looks like Ben. She tells the guy that if things don’t work out with him, she’s going after Ben. You’re not stupid MSWRavens. Does that sound like a rape victim to you?
I think something happened in Georgia. But the finding of the rape kit says it wasn’t intercourse–which is what she finally accused him of after changing her story multiple times. Personally I think he was using his hand. It fits the facts and the timeline. She was only out of sight 10 minutes. There was bruising but no semen and no indication of a condom. She was very confused about whether she’d had intercourse.
Two drunken sorority sisters say the bodyguard blocked the bathroom. Multiple other witnesses say he didn’t. The club owner said he showed those sorority sisters how to go back and check on their friend but they didn’t bother to go. The DA said the accuser was propositioning Ben all night–that their sexual involvement was mutual and she was drinking before she got there.
Google Jason Whitlock and read “Why Big Ben Really Deserved the Suspension” IF you are genuinely interested in facts and not just Steeler bashing, you’ll take everything into account. If not … then the answer to your first question is yes, I do know the definition of hypocrite. Do you?

What you’re doing here constitutes sexual assault in most states.

Right, Deb. And this coming from someone who takes pot-shots at individuals posting opinions on matters they have also read about, from someone who vociferously defends (de)famed public figures (what a work of good charity) a real woman defends the poor, the defenseless and what have you, a real woman defends her fellow women, a real woman doesn’t reduce everything to facile black and white arguments about fandom and rivalries and other such trivial and childish nonsense.
Here’s one for you, I am a woman.
Here’s another for you, I do care about rape and am disgusted by the actions of the latest millionaire pig to (allegedly) force themselves into a woman. A man whom you liken to an apparent saint that leaves the opposed masses drooling with envy over his (perceived) talent… when it is all but obvious to anyone who isn’t blinded by some 2nd grade allegiance to a pseudo-religious cult-sport, that this beast of a man is a valuable enough chip to the financial well-being of the NFL (a billion dollar industry) that he literally is invincible. He makes 100 million, but he’s worth so much more, so much more. NFL teams are like any other employer – they pay you a fraction of your actual worth. And if you’re worth enough to a sport (you think even though the indignation has quelled that female ESPN anchors really want to sit across from Kobe Bryant and interview him and try and make him look good by smiling with him and laughing and lobbing him softball questions?) The NFL will use every resource they have – the sporting press, the daily news, make a wish kids, Bullshit heavy-handed suspensions and organizational strong-talk to spin this back in their favor to protect their investment. The Tahoe thing was a page from Kobe Bryant’s handbook – admit sexual contact, call it consensual, the rest his “he said, she said.” Muddy the debate. And yes, the Georgia chick – while thoroughly intoxicated told the cops “no, nothing happened.” But, if you’re going to count the rest of the event as inadmissible because she was drunk and can’t recall what happened, or whatever you’re off on – then you cannot account for what she told the cops as well. You can’t have it both ways. Because 10-12 hours later, sober, her tone changed… didn’t it? And the responding nurse – “superficial laceration and bruising and slight bleeding in the genital area.”
The media does what it has to for the interests of the businesses that generate the revenue that keeps it running – it spins it to a draw to protect investments. The whole thing fairly smells of a cover up to prevent the hemorrhaging of serious money. And because of your (childish) allegiance to a sports team, you are too blind to see how they’ve sold you out.
And one last one for you, I don’t care about football.
And, I think it’s ‘tact’, and not ‘tack’
But, I guess, I should nit-pick a housewife who finds it good to spend her time on football blogs defending the “good” name of a (twice alleged) millionaire rapist who if it wasn’t for a television-set, she would have no connection to.
Enjoy your crusade defending those who can (obviously) defend themselves. And, enjoy your fantasy world where money and power do nothing to corrupt flawed men, as officialdom owns your eyes and mind and heart and soul, and everything is swell.

Why does that fact that he’s a millionaire matter so much to you? You and your type have an obvious bias, which taints your opinion from the start.
Some of us keep our minds open. I despise Vick for his action, but I gave him any benefit of the doubt until there was none left. I was one of the very few. The main reason people wanted/assumed him to be guilty was because he’s a famous millionaire.

  95. Deb says: Apr 25, 2010 9:43 PM

    @DeBo7130 …
Omigoodness, such a rambling rant, it’s difficult to know where to begin.
Sorry, little girl. My mistake. A real woman? No. No. Real women take their hits with dignity. You’ve come into these threads treating rape like a catcall that you shout at the rival team across the stadium. When someone calls you out–effectively–you start ranting that you’re a woman crusading against evil, entitled men who abuse women. Bull. I’m a rape survivor. It doesn’t make me hate all men or trust all women. But then I am a grownup.
And that fan worship, arguments in black-and-white, “let’s spin as much nonsensical crap as we can to cloud the issue” BS won’t work with me either. I have a journalism degree, a career as a writer/editor–and researcher–and a brother and sister-in-law who are criminal defense attorneys.
I’ve actually read Ms. McNulty’s criminal complaint multiple times as well as the other filings in the Nevada case. Ben Roethlisberger’s denials mean nothing to me. Her own text messages refute her story. Likewise, I don’t care what Ben or his attorneys have to say about Georgia. The accused usually issues denials. My comments are based on repeatedly listening to the full 71-minute press conference given by the district attorney and reading the multiple statements in the case–not just the titillating details of the accuser and her two sorority sisters.
As for real women defending women, I’ve spent hours with real rape survivors and years working for political issues and doing volunteer work for causes that affect women, children, and the poor. Publicly castrating men and raping the Constitution are not women’s issues. The due process that protects Ben Roethlisberger also protects female suspects. I’m not defending a millionaire football player. I’m defending the Constitution of the United States. That’s also what I was defending when I made these same arguments on behalf of Richard Jewell, who was not a millionaire football player. (Google it.)
I’m not a housewife, but I am a football fan. That’s why I’m here. If you’re not a football fan, why aren’t you out being a real woman, little girl? Fighting the good fight for women’s causes?
And it’s tack. It means to take a direction/position.
