Jason Campbell says he'll be the starting quarterback

The Raiders have wasted no time letting Jason Campbell how they feel about him.

They quickly extended his contract through 2011, and Campbell spoke to Al Davis after the trade was completed.  Campbell believes his new role on the team is clear.

“I feel like I’m going there to be the starter,” Campbell told Rich Eisen on NFL Network.

We’re not surprised.  The contract, not to mention Campbell’s talent and production, makes him the heavy favorite to start.  We also wouldn’t be surprised if Tom Cable says there will be a quarterback competition, even if it’s tilted towards Campbell.

The only question now is how long JaMarcus Russell stays on the roster. The Raiders are expected to ask JaMarcus Russell to take a pay cut, according to NFL Network’s Mike Lombardi.  Russell is on record saying he wouldn’t take a pay cut.

Just three years after getting taken first overall in the 2007 draft, JaMarcus Russell could be on the verge of getting released.

Bottom line is, JaMarcus Russell has $30 million in the bank, and if he walked away from football he is set for life and can do whatever he wants.
He played “the game”, by convincing everyone he was #1 and signed a big guaranteed deal and did it.
There’s no reason he needs to prove anyone to anything on the field. JaMarcus just walk away, hire some financial people to make your money last, and don’t rob any banks like Leaf.

  10. thegoldengod says: Apr 24, 2010 2:53 PM

…considering he wouldn’t win the job, he shouldn’t take the paycut. Russell is done…may be the best decision the Raiders have made in a long long time.

  11. stanjam says: Apr 24, 2010 2:54 PM

Russel is exhibit number one when it comes to instituting a rookie pay scale. So many of these kids get paid big money – guaranteed. Enough money to set themselves up for life, and well. So why should they bother to put the hard work in? What is the motivation to win? Sure, most find motivation in the game, and in winning, but too many could care less as long as they are getting paid.
The whole reason they worked hard in college was to get that pay day. Once that is acheived, they get their desire – guaranteed money, and more than most vets. It is stupid, and wrong, and insulting to many hard working NFL players.
What is needed is a scale. More than that what is needed is rookie contracts, and more veteran contracts, that are tied to performance and work ethic. You work hard – you get more money. You play well, you get more money. Motivate them to show up early, stay late, and work hard while they are there.

Why would Florio say the competition was “tilted” towards Campbell? That implies something unfair, dark, manipulative.
Maybe the Raiders know that in an open competition, Campbell will almost certainly win. No tilt necessary. Honest, fair competition. Why why why must Florio always insinuate that there is tilting and hypocricy? Reflects his own character, I guess. Florio is our window to lawyer world, in which everyone is lying, and where being dressed “right,” saying the “right thing,” having sacred respect for the powers that be is “right”– those things are what makes or breaks a career in Florio’s mind. Hell, Florio has even been pretty explicit about what he think constitutes appropriate Christianity. But Florio doesn’t know football on the field.
So folks who love football, enjoy the Raiders QB competition without worrying about tilt, bias, right, wrong, etc.

Hey JaMarcus losing part of your paycheck is better than losing all of your pay check. You get released who is going to pick you up. You have only proved in your short career that you only like the pay check and the perks you have no desire for the game itself.

  20. chiefsfan43 says: Apr 24, 2010 3:01 PM

Lets see, they get a QB with a good completion percentage and whos numbers have gotten better as time goes by. And then you look at Russell who got 30 million and never gave a crap about being a QB in the NFL. The Raiders shouldnt even have that bum in training camp. Cut your losses and move on. Russell will be out of the league soon and bankrupted in 2 years.

  21. Calgaryhawk says: Apr 24, 2010 3:01 PM

So, Russell will likely be released because his ego (which is apparently bigger than his waistsize) won’t allow him to take a paycut.
Does any other NFL team come knocking? Would the ego allow him to sign somewhere for backup money?
I don’t think you’ll find a team anywhere in North America (so the CFL is out Mr. Russell) that would consider him a safe bet as a starter.

I’m not a fan of Campbell either, but think he’s lots better than the Hamburglar. Then again Ryan Leaf was better. I too feel for Gradkowski. The man is a competitor so it’ll be interesting to see who the starter is.

“I shed a single tear for Bruce Gradkowski, the easiest guy to root for on Sunday in the entire league.”
The Raiders will be better off with either Campbell or Gradkowski starting. I think Gradkowski deserves a chance to compete based on his play last year. However, Campbell might be plagued by a lack of weapons like he was in DC.

  27. bodhisattva says: Apr 24, 2010 3:12 PM

Big time moves for the Raiders, this has to be the dawning of a new era. Acknowledgement of past mistakes are being made and enormous steps forward are the result. I’ve always liked Campbell as he completes 60%+, throws more TD’s than picks, and conducts himself with dignity. All this whilst having terrible blocking and a low output running game and a cluster f*ck organisation messing with his mind.
Whatever has prompted this shift in the Raider think tank is welcome and I hope Tom Cable is behind it.
There will not be another 8-8 AFC West Division Champion any time soon is my bold ass prediction!

Let’s not forget about McFragile. When I watch his Arkansas highlight reel, I see a 20 yr old boy who is running in the hope of obtaining a $60M pro contract. When I watch his Raider games, I see a 22 yr old boy who HAS received a $60M contract. Al shoulda picked Chris Johnson in 2008. When he saw how badly Johnson was outperforming McFragile as rookies, I believe it faked Al into outsmarting himself in the 09 draft by taking the awful DHB instead of several better prospects, because he associated DHB as being the 09 Chris Johnson-type surprise permformer.
    SURPRISE!

No I’m not lol, but I respect his scam. And if we find out in a few years he squandered it all on a dog fighting ring or something I probably wouldn’t be surprised.
But it’s funny to me how people think he should take a pay cut. If you were him, why would you? It’s obvious he’s not into playing, so let him go. Don’t try to force or create what simply isn’t there. JaMarcus, you won, now go away.
Since it would only be for league minimum I don’t think he would even want to play anywhere, and he’s rich enough he wouldn’t need to go to the CFL or anywhere.

I’m a Redskins fan and it will be interesting to see how JC performs when he’s got a decent offensive-line and the same system to play in for at LEAST 2 seasons.
He’s got his limitations but I cannot think of a QB who got this bad a treatment from his team despite being a 1st rd pick.

@turbodog: so right! the moment he left LSU we won a title. JaMarcus is ultra-talented and ultra-lazy. All those 4th Q come backs were b/c he couldn’t read defenses for the first 3 Qs.
J.R. if you read this, you either get your act together and make some more money or go your fat ass back to Mobile. you’ve been shanked!!!!
Then again, you could always stay big and become an O-lineman. Imagine a O-lineman in the backfield that can block or throw the ball.
Jason Campbell is going to be a starter for the Raiders for years. All crap aside, JR you had a solid opportunity and blew it. Just don’t blow your money.

That’s debatable. Russell is an embarrassment on the field. Leaf was a disaster both on AND off the field.
But I don’t care if he takes Leaf’s crown, as long as he’s gone before he steals another 9M. I’m not thrilled about Campbell, but at least he tries, and he’s always carried himself with dignity, even when the Redskins were openly trying to replace him. If Oakland can scrounge up a competent LT, they should be able to score more than 9 points a game this season.

“Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Idiot!”
Now that I know the circumstances, all I can do is think this about Russell:
“Fat, waste of a human being, thief. Mostly fat. And still a thief.”
On the bright side maybe they can put Russell on the O-line and say, “Jamarcus, this is Jason. Jason is our QB. We need you to stand in front of him and toss yourself in the way of anyone trying to tackle him. Do you think you can do that, Jamarcus. Yeah. That’d be great.”

Redskins fans – dont be mad that Jason Campbell did nothing but progress each year in the NFL, even though he had to learn new offensive systems each year. He just did things like throw more tds than picks each year. He did things like show up to practice in shape, form quality sentences, and act like he cared about his career. You cant question his work ethic or dedication.
All your owner did was never give him quality targets besides Cooley. He has never had as much speed to throw to as he now has in Oakland.
Oh and by the way, he now will be behind one of the biggest o-lines ever assembled.
Dont be mad when he makes the pro-bowl this year.
Also, in case you weren’t paying attention, we improved our team in this year’s draft in other areas. JC is the icing on the cake!
