Bobby Carpenter's days in Dallas could be numbered

When Bill Parcells selected Bobby Carpenter No. 18 overall in 2006, the draft grade mafia loved the pick.

Four years and little production later, Carpenter’s time with the Cowboys could be coming to an end.  Second-round pick Sean Lee is the future.  Jason Williams and Steve Octavien also play at inside linebacker and are younger.

Carpenter was reportedly available in a trade over the weekend, but no team bit.  When that happens, a release is usually not far behind.

Miami will probably sign him on a make good deal since he was originally drafted by the Tuna.

That dude better thank his lucky stars genus leaving the 1-7boys before they tank another season and blame the players yet again as opposed to the lame duck coaching staff or a owner/fm who does just enough to make it look like he knows what genus doing but will never make it to the superbowl by himself.

Poor Bobby. Great player at OSU and great person. Hopefully someone picks him up.

  4. TFBuckFutter says: Apr 26, 2010 7:45 PM

Just a tip, Gregg. Not trying to be a dick….but I really wish the writers here would mention the position of a player in their writeups rather than working it in later if at all.
Those of us who don’t follow Dallas may not know right off that Bobby Carpenter is an inside lineback.
“When Bill Parcells selected inside linebackk Bobby Carpenter” reads a lot better.
Granted, it would be a bit redundant when you’re talking about household name players.

Barbie Carpenter will find his way to Miami after Dallas dumps him and he will be a lost cause there as well.

  11. johnster says: Apr 26, 2010 8:16 PM

I have always hated the fact he wears the same number as the Manster, Randy White # 54

  12. troll_aikman8 says: Apr 26, 2010 8:17 PM

I reckon he was drafted as an outside LB, but D.Ware, Greg Ellis, and Anthony Spencer are kind of, well, superior pass rushers in comparison. So he was moved to ILB and he’s not nearly as physical as an ILB needs to be. Can’t blame him completely, but he’s just a finesse player who isn’t athletic enough, nor tenacious, nor football smart.
He’s just a guy, who occasionally does okay in pass coverage and special teams. In other words the definitive Ohio State linebacker.

This is prime example of why its crazy to go into a draft saying so and so should be drafted in whatever round.
This is prime example why its crazy to say so and so draft guru is stupid for ranking so and so player as the best, worst or anywhere in the middle as a prospect at his position.
This is prime example that its crazy for anyone to think any team had a good or bad draft last weekend.

Bobbi Carpenter is a good player and is NFL pedigree. I don’t think he had a chance to really make an impact. He did well on special teams. Hope he catches on somewhere and continues the tradition in his and the OSU family.

All of you who think Parcells was this personnel genius who should get all the credit for the Cowboys current success, this is exhibit A that that’s not the case: a #18 pick for this guy, who is nothing but a special teamer. Exhibit B is Julius Jones. Parcells figured he was just as good as Steven Jackson, so when Jackson fell into his lap, he traded down to take Julius instead. I could go on and on.
I will say this, the scene in Hard Knocks where the Cowboys O-lineman were clowning on Carpenter, calling him “Barbie”, that might be the most embarrassing moment anyone has ever had on that show. Also very telling. His teammates had no respect for his game because they know he’s soft.

As a Cowboys fan and somebody that has been watching Barbie Carpenter take huge shits all over the field for a while now, I can assure you that your comment is most certainly not true. He had plenty of opportunities to step up. Carpenter sucks horse balls, and so does Ohio State!

    east bay ray:
It’s ridiculous to point out a couple of personnel moves and claim that it’s proof someone is overrated. The simple fact is that no one gets it right all the time. My response to your statement is quite simple: Take a look at the roster before Parcells went to Dallas, and then compare it to the roster at the time he left. Which one is superior? Also, how many of the starters this past season were brought in while Parcells was in charge? Your answers to those questions should tell you all you need to know about how well Parcells puts teams together. The fact that he did the exact same thing for a few other teams lets you know that it was no accident.
As for Sean Lee, as a lifelong Eagles and Penn State fan, I’m heartbroken that the Cowboys got Lee. He’s an ideal ILB. Some teams shied away from him because of the ACL injury that cost him his Junior year, but he had a great Senior year. When you consider that players normally need an additional year to be back to peak performance when coming back from an injury like this, it seems like Lee’s either a remarkably quick healer or he’ll be even better than he looked his Senior year. Furthermore, on top of his physical skills, Lee has shown over the years that he’s both very knowledgeable about his position and that he’s firmly focused on his team’s success. Man do I hate that he’s going to be wearing a star on his helmet.

  44. Jackson says: Apr 27, 2010 9:40 AM

…sucks. he’s a great guy and great team player. You always want guys like him to succeed because he has a great attitude and is always positive. It’s too bad though because he’s not good enough to be a solid backup. He is a pretty decent special teamer though so I think he can solidify a roster spot somewhere. He did make some plays for us at times at LB but they were few and far between.

  45. ClarenceWhorley says: Apr 27, 2010 9:53 AM

Hope he signs in New England, the Genius will figure out how to use him. He probably should have been a week side linebacker and we could use one (or 4).

  46. philgrek says: Apr 27, 2010 12:57 PM

Being a Cowboy fan, & having actually watched Barbie Carpenter play..the dude is a lost cause.
He CAN be decent at covering a TE or RB now-and-then, but in space he takes bad angle after bad angle after bad angle. He’s always missing tackles and looking clueless in zone coverage.
I hate the fact that he was taken in the 1st round. Can’t wait til he’s someone else’s problem.

  47. buckifan4life says: Apr 27, 2010 1:32 PM

Crybaby Cowboy losers doing what they do best,…cry.
