Tim Tebow helps Jaguars sell tickets to opener

The Jaguars began to see an uptick in ticket sales after the first round of the NFL draft, and not because everyone in Jacksonville is eager to see Tyson Alualu.

Jacksonville hosts Denver in their home opener, and after the Broncos chose hometown hero Tim Tebow in the first round, Jaguars group ticket sales manager Robert Tilka says, there was an immediate change in the demand for tickets.

We have had a significant amount of more calls coming in,” Tilka told the Orlando Sentinel.

Of course, there’s a good chance that Tebow won’t even get on the field in the game. But the fans in Jacksonville want to turn out to support him anyway. Which means that if the Jaguars had chosen Tebow, they’d probably be getting a significant amount of calls for season tickets, not just single-game tickets.

The headline of this entry made me picture Tebow stading outside the Jaguars’ offices exchanging tickets for large amounts of cash. You know, like he normally does for autographs.

And that, my friends, shows the stupidity of the JaGators. They did the same BS back when the Skins played with Steve Spurrier coaching and Shane Matthews and Danny Wuerffel coming back to Cowford, and the Jags beat the Skins silly that game. All Spurrier needed to do was run Stephen Davis as he was tearing up the Jags D early, but the Ole Ball Coach tried to go back to the Fun and Gun days and Matthews threw about 60 passes completing only 19 of them if memory serves.
Now when we sold out JMS and showed up for the Monday Night game against the Giants which was Coughlin’s first game back, that was cool. That was just a big “thank you” for everything he did for the team and city.
It’s a lot easier to plunk down $50 than it is $500.
Perfect example here. In one of the many Jacksonville Jaguar Facebook comments expressing the anger of us not drafting Tebow, some idiot on Thursday night said he was selling his season tickets in the lower bowl ($95 seats) for upper deck prices ($30 seats) and he was dead serious provided of course he keeps the Denver game ticket. I asked him a few times via comment thread and e mail to name his price and I’d give him the money in cash that day so I could get 2 more for some clients. Obviously he never responded.
The JaGators are all bluster. They’ll be back on the bandwagon when the Jags put together a 4 game winning streak. To spend the money and to think they’re giving Weaver, Smith, and Del Rio a big F you while the golden child sits with the headset and clipboard and might get in for a Wildcat play or one of those stupid ass jump passes is laughable, but speaks to the ridiculousness of the Gator nation.
I kinda hope he gets in the game. I’d love to see a repeat of the Kentucky game and the most overhyped concussion ever. Hell Jahvid Best looked like he was having a seizure after his concussion in the Cal game and he didn’t get half the national and local play that Tebow did after he got drilled. Or even better, I’d love to see a repeat of the Senior Bowl when Tyson Alualu does a strip sack on him.

MOst people in Cincy vacation in Florida. For once, numerous Floridians might head for Cincy so they can see Tebow’s first NFL action in Denver’s first preseason game of the year.
It will be the most overhyped, over-analyzed 4th Quarter of a preseason game in NFL history.

Bullshit. Gator freakin Nation would have said “well, he’s a Jag, but he’s gonna ride the bench, so I’m not buying tickets.”…The Jags have drafted Gators many times & Gator Nation has never stepped up to buy tickets. Tebow is different than Nelson or Harvey, but that’s bullshit just the same.

  6. BroncosFanTX77 says: Apr 26, 2010 12:41 PM

This goes to show NFL schedule-makers had inside info that Tebow was going to be a Bronco~

  7. Beer Cheese Soup says: Apr 26, 2010 12:41 PM

…and when Jacksonville wins ten games this year, and Denver wins two, THEN we will see who made the better draft-day decision, and who will be able to sell tickets.

  8. afcjags03 says: Apr 26, 2010 12:42 PM

Why would anyone want to buy tickets to watch Tebow sit on the bench holding a clipboard?

  9. Moe Lester says: Apr 26, 2010 12:45 PM

all this for a guy who hasn’t even shown he can be any more successful than JaMarcus Russell in the NFL?

You think maybe the up-tick in sales calls would have anything to do with the largest off season event “the NFL Draft”?
Come on…just because the sales calls have increased doesn’t mean it has anything to do with Tebow. I bet all teams have seen an increase in calls since the start of the draft.

  12. Happy Gilmore says: Apr 26, 2010 12:51 PM

This is totally expected. I think all the trailer trash Gator fans in Jax were totally sweating it out Thursday night, thinking “what if the Jags really DO draft Tebow?? Then I’ll have to put my money where my mouth is and actually buy tickets to show what a good fan I am!”
No, instead they now get to buy a $20 hat or $50 Broncos jersey, go to one game all year (as long as it doesn’t conflict with the Gators playing Charleston Southern School for the Blind of course) and pat each other on the back of their wife beaters and say “I can’t believe them didn’t draft Tay-Bow!” and other such dip-distorted nonsense.
It’s a lot easier to plunk down $50 for a jersey than it is $400 for season tickets, and those trailer payments aren’t getting any cheaper now are they, Gator fans?
    Redneck trash…

.. just to watch him holding a clipboard.

i can tell u that they would also be getting a significant amount of call canceling from people like me. it sucks to live in florida if u r not a gator fan, let me tell you. this is the loudest, most ignorant fan base in all of sports. these idiots think they were owed tebow to be drafted by the jags just because he is from jacksonville and a gator. u should seriously listen to some jacksonville sports radio, its comical and embarrassing. even the show hosts themselves are still pining for tebow and talking about how they missed out by not drafting this tool. then to the listen live link… i promise u will not be disappointed if u want to listen to a bunch of dumbasses whine about something they have no idea about! lol go jags

  15. Jack Acid says: Apr 26, 2010 1:02 PM

    What is more pathetic?
That the Jags fans wanted Tebow, or the fact they are buying up tickets to see him not play in the season opener AGAINST them?

  16. Sow Crates says: Apr 26, 2010 1:04 PM

I realize the Jags are crummy on defense, and at best average in the passing game…
…but Maurice Jones Drew is one hell of a player, and ought to be a huge attraction for Jags fans. And I realize Garrard isn’t the sexiest or most productive QB in the league, but looking at his stats, you could do a whole lot worse than Garrard and it’d be hard to blame him for Jacksonville’s lack of success.

  17. TealDeal says: Apr 26, 2010 1:04 PM

They would have bought season tickets to watch him sit the bench?
It would have made Leftwich vs Garrard look like a day at Disney World.
I’ll have my jorts and mullet wig ready.

  18. BigBear123 says: Apr 26, 2010 1:06 PM

Think McD is a good fit for him. Tebow has everything but mechanics and those can be taught.

  20. Richierich420 says: Apr 26, 2010 1:09 PM

They have to buy season tickets if they are calling now because single game tickets don’t go on sale until late July

  21. robsterNY says: Apr 26, 2010 1:12 PM

Thats pathetic!… have a city here that buys up tickets to see some good ole boy whos playing for the other team. Then the next game the cant sell enough tickets to pay the damn hot dog bill *LOL*…..what a joke!

  22. J. Clayton says: Apr 26, 2010 1:23 PM

Single game tickets go on sale in August.
It is April, according to my calendar.
    Why was this even written?
Tebow hasn’t done anything yet except generate a few phone calls.

  23. Greenantz says: Apr 26, 2010 1:35 PM

Tim Tebow has more press than Sam Bradford. Crazy.

  24. dafish says: Apr 26, 2010 1:39 PM

Watch last year’s game tapes from the Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Alabama games and tell me you still believe that all he is missing is the mechanics.

  25. Akshun says: Apr 26, 2010 1:39 PM

  26. jagtom0025 says: Apr 26, 2010 1:45 PM

I am will to bet the people calling in for tickets are the one that didn’t want Tebow drafted. People that aren’t Gator fans in Jax are sick of hearing about him.

“…and when Jacksonville wins ten games this year, and Denver wins two, THEN we will see who made the better draft-day decision, and who will be able to sell tickets. ”
Denver’s sold out every home game since ’72.
If we lose 14 games, it will likely have nothing to do with Tim Tebow, who will probably be on the bench all season.
So in other words, go back to being a fan one quarter of the time.

  29. Seeryer says: Apr 26, 2010 2:11 PM

Jacksonville is about as conservative a city as there is in Florida. The religion of Tim Tebow is what brings out masses. Jaguars fans in town didn’t want the Jags to take Tebow. It would be such a pander and such a reach. Say what you want about Alualu but he will start all 16 games this season and help Jacksonville win games. Tebow won’t start for three years. It has nothing to do with him being a Gator or from J-ville. It has to do with him symbolizing something as popular as Christianity. He is seen by many as a prophet or something. It has nothing to do with his ability and everything to do with his faith. He appeals more to people who could care less about football than he does to people that love football.

  30. marcduke says: Apr 26, 2010 2:25 PM

Damn, the guy just got drafted on Thursday and you’re already speculating that he’ll have to turn to ticket scalping to pay the bills?

  31. FreeAgentPro says: Apr 26, 2010 3:08 PM

It seems there is a case of manlove between McDaniels and Tebow. Tebow was gushing to the press how the two of them just clicked with chemistry when they met at the Combine. Vet silly stuff.

  32. jj jones says: Apr 26, 2010 3:14 PM

Something doesn’t jive in this story. Single game tickets for the Jaguars are not on sale yet. You can only buy season tickets at the moment. Are the Jaguars seeing an increase in season ticket sales since the draft or are they only seeing an increase in interest in single game tickets for the opener? If it is the latter, the headline is very misleading. I would be interested to see how many people inquiring about single game tickets actually buy them.

  33. TJ Rubley says: Apr 26, 2010 3:43 PM

The Ravens front office still laughing that the Broncos gave up what they did to them in order to move up and get Tebow.

The next person that says something to me about “lowly Jaguars” … or “Los Angeles Jaguars” … or anything about Jaguar fans being “rediculous” IN PERSON is getting their faces broken in multiple places.

“The Jaguars began to see an uptick in ticket sales after the first round of the NFL draft, and not because everyone in Jacksonville is eager to see Tyson Alualu.”
I’m eager to see Tyson Alualu but maybe that’s b/c I’m a diehard. First off single tickets are not on sell yet. Second, ticket sells always increase after the draft and third calls don’t mean they are willing to purchase. They silly Tebow lovers are just calling to see how much a ticket cost, but they aren’t buying.
Serioulsy, let it go. Tebow is gone. He was not drafted by the Jags. He doesn’t know you personally and he’s not going to be hanging out with you or going to church with you. This isn’t a competition b/t the Gators and Jags. Support the team with the name of the city that you live in on and not the freakin player. That’s why Seminoles and Hurricane fans can’t stand you simple-minded people(not all Gator fans, but most).

“#Jaguars sold over 400 new season tickets over the weekend.” (Source:
…and that was without drafting Tim Tebow.
They also sold over 1200 new season tickets the week before the draft (15th – 22nd) when all indications were that the Jaguars would not be drafting Tebow.

  37. dafish says: Apr 26, 2010 5:43 PM

    Alu alualualu…alu…alu….
The article mentions that it is the GROUP ticket sales manager that has received more calls. The Jags have set aside seats for group sales, which are no doubt available on a single game basis already.
Likely there are Gator alumni and fanclub groups, as well as church and other organizations interested in attending Tebow’s first NFL regular season game.
I find it highly doubtful that these groups or an substantial number of the individuals comprising them would have become season holders had the Chosen One been drafted by the Jags.
