In Oakland, it's Jason Campbell's job to lose

NFL_campbell1_250.jpgRaiders coach Tom Cable says that quarterback Jason Campbell shouldn’t assume that he’ll be the starting quarterback in 2010.

Still, a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that, absent a complete meltdown by Campbell, he’ll be the Week One starter for the Raiders.

So why is Cable throwing water on the anointment of Campbell?  The likely explanation is that Cable is trying to instill a sense of competition in the offseason program and coming training camp.  It’s also possible that the Raiders want JaMarcus Russell to think that he’d have a chance to keep the job if he agrees to restructure a contract that currently pays him $3 million in guaranteed salary and $6.45 million in non-guaranteed salary.

Regardless, Campbell currently is in line to become the next starting quarterback — and hopefully to provide the kind of leadership that the offense hasn’t enjoyed since Rich Gannon retired.

wouldn’t be surprised if he does, he is a career loser after all.

  2. DanSnyder says: Apr 27, 2010 9:37 PM

He will be a better fit for the raiders but I wouldnt put him on Gannon’s level. He could end up having a very productive career but I still don’t see him as ever being great. He lacks certain intangibles that great players have. In all my years I’ve seen him bring us back from behind in the 4th quarter to win the game once and we have been in alot of close games over the years.

Gloryhole, do some legwork before writing an inacurate article. For your information, the offense clicked, rallied behind, and followed the leadership of Bruce Gradkowski after he replaced Russell with little reps in camp and no reps during the season. Unfortunately he got hurt and the team wasnt the same after he was out. You should know this, They rallied behind Gradkowski to knock YOUR STEELERS out of the Playoffs on the road in Pittsburgh! RAAAAAAAIDERSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

Campbell will finally be able to play in a system that map his abilities. Campbell was like a fish out of water in most of the schemes he played in and is no west coast QB. He is a down the field play action QB that is good with his feet in roll outs and such. Playing on a garbage team last year the kid threw for more yards, higher completion percentage and only a couple less TD’s than McNabb and McNabb had an O line and good receivers. Nobody knows how good this kid can be.

It takes more than a qb to win close games. How about a defense that makes a stop when it counts. The skins defense is one of the most overrated. They are great until it matters. Skins fans dont want to admit that they have, and have had mediocre players particularly on offense. Santana is a #2 at best and the young guys havent done anything. But I guess that is Campbells fault too. Did you watch any of the games? Against Philly he couldnt get a throw off on the last drive. Sellers fumbled on the 40 against New Orleans, shall I go on? Campbell wasnt great but he is hardly to blame for the skins woes. No line, no impact players besides Portis, and he couldnt take the skins to the playoffs in one of the strongest divisions in the league, he does suck. And yes Im a skins fan. Hail!
When they go 7-9 or 8-8 with McNabb I want yall to blame it on him as well.

We already have that guy in Grads – if Campbell makes it more competitive, all the better.

As a person who will actually admit he wanted to draft Russell, I would pick…sad to say…Leaf.
Russell will be broke and MC Hammer-status (convenient because of the wardrobe tendencies) in 3 years, maybe less.

With absolutely no allegiance to OAK as a Dolphin fan, the Raiders made some great moves this year. (1) Keeping Cable (2) Getting Fargas out of McFadden/Bush way (3) Great draft (4) Signing Campbell for practically free (5) Soon to be releasing Ja-lardass
They already had some young receivers with tremendous potential (Murphy/Schillens/Z. Miller…. DHB??).
This Oakland team could easily get to 8-8 this year, which would give them respectability again. I applaud their moves and look forward to the annoying Raider Nation back on here with some confidence again.

Campbell will win the job as the starter just dont expect any game winning drives. Hes a good guy a decent QB and puts up good numbers. The Redskins were injured like crazy last year with some horrible coaching. The Redskins were in the playoffs 2 years ago. How bout the Raiders ass! Most the games were lost by less than 10 points. Campbell never could win us the game and was often scared even if there was decent blocking. Instead of refering to just youtube vids on players actually watch the games. Campbell will be good but he will take a year or two and hopefully you guys will be able to get him to manage games better than the Redskins could under Zorn. But dont get too cocky right now. Theres a reason he was traded for a 4th round draft pick in 2 years.

I think the Raiders benefitted most from having the draft in prime time. Al Davis had his glass of warm milk and was out cold by the 4th pick.
They addressed the offensive line a bit, but I still think the Raiders will suck next year and Campbell or whoever else will get creamed. Give them their token Broncos W, a pathetic loss to the Chiefs, and an unexpected win against a good team somewhere else along the way and be happy to go 7-9 ‘Nation.
I just can’t believe people are saying they have a good young receiving core. Probably the funniest shit I have ever seen when Murphy and DHB ran into each other on that route last year.

I kind a feel bad for Jamarcus Russell. I mean he never really had good help at WRs and/or Oline. He kept getting new QB coaches, head coaches and offensive coordinators.. McFadden never helped him as expected so teams would stack the box. His fumbles were due to part of bad Oline pass protection and nobody open in 3sec.(thanks to K.Harris)
    BUT!!!!!
When he doesnt show up for meetings, skips trainings, doesnt study film as he should(if he even does), doesnt do anything to get in shape and goes clubbing hrs after loss, then I say he got what he asked for..
He got alot of people fired because he never produced to Davis standards and almost got Cable fired too.. Its time to part ways and move on.. If he pans out somewhere else(NE, since they take all of our players we cut)then good for him.. but atleast we will all be relief he’s not stuck with us.. He will never pan out for us because he isnt mentally strong and careless.

  53. Steve says: Apr 28, 2010 3:57 AM

    A couple things.
    1. Mista T… You think Gradkowski and Boller are better QBs than Jason Campbell? Seriously?!?
Gradkowski has a career 65.9 QB Rating… And even last year when everyone annointed him something amazing, his QB Rating was 80.6… 6 TDs 3 INTs…
Kyle Boller has a career 70.6 QB Rating… And last year threw 3 TDs and 6 INTs with the Rams… Granted it’s the Rams but he couldn’t even be a starter full time ON that Rams team, which speaks volumes to how much he sucks.
Jason Campbell has a career 82.3 QB Rating, last year 86.4 (20 TDs 15 INTs). It’s not even close, Campbell is BY FAR better than both of those guys… It’s seriously not even in the same category, Campbell would start for more than a quarter of the teams in the NFL right now, Gradkowski and Boller would start for 0.
I know Gradkowski played well in his three games last year, but the reason he looked so great is because the Raiders have a good football team, they were just led by the worst QB in Oakland Raiders history… Average QB play on that team last year and they were an 8-8 level team… Campbell on this team is a borderline playoff team, especially in the AFC West and one of the divisions they play is the NFC West (who’s the only division WORSE than the AFC West)
    2. Titans Smoke Pole you think Robert Gallery is a big bust? You certainly don’t know anything about what has happened with him in the last 5 years… He was a bust his first year when he was clearly out of position and didn’t look comfortable… He is CURRENTLY a pro bowl level LG in the NFL and will be a pro bowler in the next two or three years… Some people hear a thing three years ago and it sticks in their mind, I’m sure that’s what happened with you and Robert Gallery, but he’s a VERY good offensive lineman in the NFL… Most DEFINITELY not a bust.
    3. Finally, the Raiders are going to surprise a lot of people. All the talk around here last year is what this team would look like with average NFL QB play… They got that from Bruce Gradkowski (though admittedly that Steelers game he was terrific) and they went 2-1 in the games he started and finished… With an upgrade over Gradkowski and a full offseason to learn the offense and prepare for Campbell… Plus the addition of Hue Jackson which is VERY underrated for the Raiders this year, and new defensive line coach Mike Waufle (the guy who coached the NY Giants DL that beat the Patriots) plus the new addition at MLB and DT to focus on stopping the run the Raiders are definitely in position to be VERY good in a couple years with their youth, but should be a borderline playoff team NOW as well.

  55. nicewolf64 says: Apr 28, 2010 5:48 AM

Russell has $3m reasons not to renegotiate because if he does, it’ll be for less $$ than just getting cut outright. I get the impression that it wont bother him at all to go down in history as one of, if not the worst, draft bust ever.

  56. The Shape says: Apr 28, 2010 5:55 AM

The key to this whole puzzle is Hue Jackson…If Campbell can listen to this guy were all set and that Campbell doesn’t have win these games all by himself. Russell needs to go period, he blew it. The Raiders defense will be a force this year, in which will help Campbell.

  57. gwinn1952 says: Apr 28, 2010 6:15 AM

    anointment isn’t a word

  59. smithopher says: Apr 28, 2010 7:52 AM

JaMarcus Russell and Jason Campbell both suck. I think Campbell sucks less, but they both suck. Russell is going to find himself forced out of the league by offseason 2011 and Campbell will soon follow when the Raiders realize he can’t produce. He definitely isn’t a ‘winner’. The kids gotta have a losing career record… Its time to use one of those top 5 draft picks they’ll enjoy for a few years to come on a top qb prospect sometime soon. If they keep racking up all these first rounders and don’t get anywhere with them, they should even be able to easily trade up to the first overall to make sure they get everything done. I don’t think Campbell’s the guy for any NFL team really. He’ll be a back up and he’s the interim guy for Oakland, in my eyes.

WOW! The delusion and spin on Campbell is nothing short of breathtaking.
The Raiders have a better O Line and WR’s than Cambell has had? The Skins have no talent on O, no skill players that are “impact”? Man oh man some folks need to pay attention and do a little more research.
The Skins made the playoffs during Campbell’s tenure and went on their late season 5 in a row run…when he was injured and his backup energized the team with crisp decision making and accurate downfield throwing. Campbell is lousy at reading defenses, locks in on receivers and most often does a horrible job checking down past the primary and going to2nd, 3rd and 4th WR routes.
He rarely goes downfield by comparison to say a Gradkowski who was in air it out Raider ball(hence the difference in QB rating). When he does go downfield he has a horrible rate of accuracy and misses wide open WR’s time after time after time. He does have a cannon arm but he generally couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if it’s more than 15 yards. If it’s moving? Forget it, the WR will have to slow down and turn around or be widely overthrown.
That would be ok if the guy had good touch and accuracy in short range but alas he doesn’t and does a horrible job of ball placement to his WR’s TE’s and RB’s for RAC. He’s the king of throwing it behind his guy making them slow or turn to catch it, this is especially helpful in a rhythm, timing and accuracy based system like the West Coast Offense!
Look, Campbell is a good kid and a hard worker and a good teammate but stick to the facts folks. Line or not (Washington’s line when healthy was damn good at times with Samuels, Dockery, Thomas, Raybach and Heyer at one point…that’s 4 pro bowlers who helped lead the league in rushing at times and helped guys like Collins and Brunell rack up some impressive stats, Portis is also arguably the best blocking back in the league and Yoder was at worst solid as a blocking TE) he was a poor decision maker even when in a Coryell style offense under Gibbs for 2 years. He also was known among his teammates for NOT being a good leader or one to count on to bring the team back. The guy never once was able to put the team on his back. I don’t care what the excuses are he had MANY opportunities to do so and using the D or the O line as an excuse is a bunk copout …the guy flat out couldn’t rise to the occasion…EVER.
As for overrated defense…that’s a load of bull too. Shame on the Skins fan for not even having the facts straight on his own team.
When an offense turns it over on 3 and out to the rate of leading the league because the QB can’t do a damn thing in the clutch the defense is going to get worn down. When the defense has to play 40 of the 60 minutes and do it with a mash unit in the secondary they’re going to wear down. When a D wears down they’re going to give up yards and a score late in the game. If they hold the opposing team to 7-10 points, they should expect a victory.
If anything the Redskins D has been UNDERRATED. That’s just insane.
Good luck JC but Raider fans you’re NOT getting a great leader or a clutch player or a guy who hasn’t been given a ton of chances and plenty of time to show ANYTHING (the 4 OC’s is a red herring, he had one system for 2 years and still couldn’t run it better than Todd “career backup” Collins). Fact is he’s got decent numbers because his coaches dumbed down the offense when he was playing and took away many routes and plays because he couldn’t handle the full book. He took near to zero chances even when the play option was there for him to go deep. He drove his coaches nuts in this regard. No risk equals no reward. It also equals very few turnovers and no clutch plays or comebacks in closing minutes of close games. When he does take risks, he blows it phenomenally with seemingly countless last minute INT’s at the absolute worst time’s of the game. But hey he’s got a decent QB rating!

    I’ve updated how the Raiders QB did last year and updated the stats to reflect how their stats looked minus the rookies;

    @ OranjelloJones
I live in skins country and know more about the team than I wish to know. Last years Redskins were a lot like last years Raiders. You are right on a few things, but it should be mentioned that the Redskins didn’t have any decent wide receivers and their best target is Chris Cooley who only played in seven games last year. Still, somehow Campbell managed to improve his numbers. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not completely sold on Campbell, but he is an upgrade at the position, and the Raiders should be competitive whether it’s Campbell or Grad who starts.
Like I said, the Skins were a lot like the Raiders last season, the only difference being, the skins didn’t have JaMarcus Russell. As bad a syou think Campbell is, you have sen nothing yet, unless you’ve watched every single down Russell played, which I have. As a matter of fact, I’ve almost watched every single down Campbell has layed. In the end, I’ll take Campbell any day of the week of Russell.

The Raiders are 29-83 over the last 7 years.
Russell has played 2 seasons, under less than ideal circumstances, to say the least.
When he’s gone the Davis idolaters will have to target another scapegoat.

Al Davis the Raiders General Manager is 29-83 over the last 7 years.
The Raiders problems begins and ends, right there.

Ok, I’m a die hard Raider fan – probably more die hard than most, but I’m not crazy enough to believe that in one off season we’re super bowl bound.
But God, please let us achieve .500 this year! I could be really REALLY happy with an 8-8 season.
And with all the rediculously stupid moves the Donkeys have made, and as terrible as K.C. will remain, not to mention all the unsigned RFAs that the Chargers have, we might actually see a wild card this year.
    HERE’S TO HOPING!

So what? The Raiders won’t win more than 6-7 games with or without JC starting
