Jeff Ireland accused of lack of class

Just before the draft, we heard the most offensive job interview question we can imagine.

Dez Bryant was asked if his mom was a prostitute.

The wide receiver answered and didn’t show his anger.  Since then, Bryant was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.  And Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports reveals the man who asked the question used to work for America’s Team — current Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland.

We agree with Silver and the other ex-NFL players he spoke to: Ireland was unprofessional.  (Silver enjoyably goes further, calling Ireland “biggest jerk in the history job interviewers” and an “A-List A-hole.”  The whole article is worth a read.)

The rumors about Bryant’s family were out there, but a potential employer asking about it crosses a line. It wouldn’t happen in any other industry

The timing of this news is interesting.  We just read a piece about Ireland showing a more human side to the media. In it, Ireland said he hopes to develop as a person.

This story comes just after the Dolphins took some P.R. blows after Jason Taylor ‘s departure. Zach Thomas said that Bill Parcells wouldn’t even let him hold a farewell press conference at the team facility when he left the team in 2008.

Ireland doesn’t usually seem to care about his image, which is his right. We’ll see if that changes after the country hears this story, and more folks call him an “A-List A-Hole.”

  1. Well, I suppose it could happen in the professional escort or adult entertainment industries…

  2. Well Was she?I cant believe he had the balls to ask..Thats pretty funny..The question did have to be asked if the rumor was out there..

  3. i asked lagarrette blount about his mom. bad idea. the doc tells me eventually the swelling will go down.

  4. Are you friggin kiddin’ me? I would have smacked the crap out of him…real class act….good on Bryant and maybe you A-holes were wrong about him and his character….

  5. Jeff Ireland is crazy. Dez Bryant’s mom isn’t a prostitute . . Dez Bryant is a prostitute.
It’s true, Deion Sanders is his pimp. Just ask the NCAA

  6. Yup that sounds about right from the Dolphin organization. Yet they like to tout their organization as character driven and classy. Better Hope Brandon Marshall doesnt dog it once things dont go his way!!

  7. Michael Silver is obviously pulling 98% of this out of his ass. Post coital draft depression or something. The guy that jumps out to me as the big “jerk” in this is Silver. Or Bryant.
Why whine about that in public? Methinks Dozy Bryant doth protest overly much. Bay-Bay Thomas mother is in federal prison along with his grandmother. 20 years and 40 years respectively for dealing cocaine. Thomas was up front about it and openly acknowledges the two were guilty. He asked them to stop. When he was about 10 years old.
Little wonder the Broncos took DeMaryius ahead of Dozy.

  8. Another blown out of proportion story. Teams routinely ask ‘shock’ questions to gauge a response. Other professions do this too. In Dez’s case, perhaps you should be researching if the answer to the question is in fact ‘yes’ and the manner in which the question was asked. If the answer to the question is actually ‘yes’, then the question seems far less inappropriate.

  9. He was doing his due dilligance if he didnt get the trutth about his drugged out hooker mom the media would have thus making the organization look like idiots

  10. “It wouldn’t happen in any other industry”
That is because any other industry where you are interviewing for a job that pays you millions of dollars, odds are that your mom is not a prostitute.

  11. I would have left out the Kyle Turley quote describing Ireland as “classless”
    That made me laugh

  12. if jeff ireland did ask that, he truly is classless. that’s not a term i toss out very much b/c i always think the one saying it seems like the real ass generally (note: the millions of ‘stay classy ——– fans’) but in this case i agree with the yahoo-lligan silver.

  13. So what’s Dez going to do the first time a DB asks him the same question repeatedly? That’s why some teams ask them in interviews. Will he go bananas, or remain calm?

  14. Why the hell does it matter if she is or isn’t or was or wasn’t has nothing to do with Dez, football or anything. Idiotic question and idiots who believe it should be asked or answered.

  15. The rumors about Bryant’s upbringing and family were out there, but a potential employer asking about it crosses a line. It wouldn’t happen in another industry:
    +_______________________________
Yeah, of course it doesn’t happen in other industries. How many other industries give $20+ million to stupid kids fresh out of college that have never proven themselves in the professional workplace?
It’s called doing their homework on a potential employees character. If you don’t like it then you need to quit giving teams crap about their a-hole players getting in trouble.. or you should just cover the NBA.

  16. Don’t worry Gregg, as long as Bill Simmons keeps making podcasts then you don’t have to worry about having the most effete voice in the media.

  17. Most people probably don’t know Bryants mom was a Crack head who sold Drugs, who knows she could be a whore. What if the Dolphins drafted him and then months later Dez bryant’s mom is in the news.

  18. Goodell should suspend him 6 games. That’s low, low class. We should expect nothing less from a team in the AFC East.

  19. Wow…I am a HUGE Phins fan and this really bothers me. I heard about this story a few days ago and it bothered me then.
I can’t imagine being asked a question like that in a job interview.
    Wow.

  20. the dolphins have always been considered the most classless organization in the nfl. that goes back to their cheating and preferential treatment in the 70-s right up to the classless comments made by mercury and shula regarding the 07 Pats.

  21. It wouldn’t happen in any other industry
    ———
Work as a bouncer at a strip joint and you will hear much more interesting interview questions.
We also have legalized prostitution in Nevada and would expect some questions similar to that.
Not something to expect from a G.M. though, maybe a personnel assistant who wants to be fired. Or even someone who holds a grudge, but way off for a G.M.

  22. This just shows how much of a problem Dez is not. He didn’t blow up or anything, he had more class than the guy interviewing him. Maybe that’s why the Dolphins haven’t done anything, ever.

  23. If Silver is trying to drum up sympathy for Doze Bryant, he is about 20 years too late. Bryant should have the Do Not Draft label stamped on his forehead.
Jeff Ireland may well be a jerk, but that has yet to be proven. Silver and Bryant give us ample evidence to prove their jerkdom every time they open their pie holes.

I’m not sure what profession you work in, but I assure you that I’ve never been asked a question anywhere close to this. Maybe it could come up if you were applying for a position in law enforcement, but that’s got to be about the only possible scenario where you should legitimately be asked that question.
And if his mother was a prostitute, how would that have any impact at all on Bryant’s potential ability to play WR in the NFL? The cicumstances under which he spent his childhood have been well documented. However, his mother’s willingness to exchange sex for money doesn’t make the question any less inappropriate.

  25. LYING TO THE NCAA for his pimp daddy Dieon and we are supposed to believe him? Yea, right….He just pissed cause he wanted to be on South Beach….Gotta luv it..BTW….not all of us season ticket holders are pissed that Jason “on wanna be on TV one more time” Taylor is gone, nor did it bother me that Zack did not get a farewell. If he wanted one he should have put one on for himself or done what others have done, take out a paid ad in the newspapers to say bye bye. This organization does not do intro or exit interviews and they have stated it so.

  26. That’s some nice language your typing there kids.
It is never appropriate to ask a question like that. Why would anything think that? It is irrelevant. I am shocked we didn’t hear a report about Bryant assaulting him.

  27. Am I the only one who thinks this isn’t that big a deal? Sure it might be considered an ‘inapropriate’ question and if I was asked this in an interview to be, say, an administrative clerk, I would probably just walk out. But this was an interview to win a contract that could be worth tens of millions of dollars in guaranteed money. If someone was thinking about offering me that much money, they could whip out my dick and measure it if they liked.

  28. That’s not a shocking question, but a classless and inappropriate question. Never a need to act unprofessional like that. Those sorts of questions would never fly in a standard job interview. That’s a one-way ticket to a big legal headache.
Now a shocking question to ask would be like “Who do you think the Bills will beat in the Super Bowl?”, you know, something totally off the wall.

  29. i read that biased article. it sucked.
the question was a blatantly obvious attempt to ruffle the feathers of a player who has clear character red flags. nice strategic move. the GM of the miami dolphins doesnt care what anyone thinks about it either.
the authors childish comparison “what if the same thing happened in other industries?” is baseless. yea what if the same thing happened in other industries? what if scores of criminal offenders with 2.0 gpa’s flooded REAL job industries? think about that. the fact of the matter is, the nfl, and other sports for that matter are extremely atypical industries and because of that the “interview” process is, and should be, atypical as well.

  30. Huh, I’ve never gone black, but I got a 20 spot on “oral service” from Mrs. Bryant. Stay classy Dallas!

  31. Give Dez major props for not kicking his ass and also for getting where he’s at inspite of his upbringing

  32. Silver is as always full of it. First, if I am a GM considering paying a guarantee of more than 10 million dollars, for sure I will make sure that I ask EVERY question that comes to my mind. I want to see how the kid is going to react! I want to see if he can handle tough questions the right way. This is not college, it is a PROFESSION. Also, if the Dolphins are so bad handling free agents, why did Karlos Dansby and Marshall sign with them. Of course money matters, but they understand that this is non-sense organization.

  33. How dare you Mr. Ireland? She is an honest drug dealer, she does not sell sex, she only sells drugs to kids.

  34. It might have been an inappropriate question but I’m sure he asked it to see what kind of reaction he would get from him. Bryant has had a lot of questions surrounding his upbringing and past so it was probably asked to him to see how he can handle the situation.
Jet Fans that posted above don’t get me started on Rex Ryans fat arse flipping people the bird, telling them to fu@k off and worse of all making everyone suffer by taking his shirt off and exposing to the world he has no belly button.
It could be worse, Ireland could have raped a girl in a bathroom at a club, or got drunk and decided to drive and kill a pedestrian, or fight dogs and kill them.

  35. “And Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports reveals the man who asked the question used to work for America’s Team — current Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland.
We agree with Silver and the other ex-NFL players he spoke to: Ireland was unprofessional. ”
Whatever happened to “allegedly”?? So for 3 months, Bryant has been nothing but a flawed kid with multiple “character issues”. And now we should take what a “source close to Bryant” says as GOSPEL???? Gimme a break. Until Dez has the cajones to come out and say “Jeff Ireland asked me the question”, this is a complete non-story written by someone who apparently sees the world through Green and White glasses….

    ————-
FALSE, his mom is a crackhead, Dez himself is very lazy.

  37. Jeff Ireland must have been looking for something to hit…
Had Dez answered yes, Ireland woulda asked if Dez had a current pic.

  38. Just another example of Parcells and Ireland’s arrogance. They have done a decent job and I am grateful that they have turned a disaster into a very solid team, but they’ve crapped on Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor, two of the classiest and greatest players in franchise history. It’ s just annoying that these guys act as if they’re god’s gift to football and Parcells hasn’t won a super bowl since 1990, and Ireland has zero super bowl rings I think. Nonetheless it’s 100x better than having Cam Cameron or Dave Wannstedt.

  39. i think if i were to commit 20-30 million dollars to this guy,i would want to know everything there is to know about him,and i would ask him every question i could to see if i could get a rise from him, just so i would know if he had a short fuse,i think if they are about to pay me a crazy amount of money to play a childs game, hey ask me anything you want,i think bryant is a big wussy and so is silver, get over it

  40. WAA- WAA- GOO- GOO , So WHAT !!! I am really getting tired of all the drummed up racism crap. Who’s crying for us “CRACKERS” every time we have our feelings hurt ???! Florio, I’m disappointed you even posted this crap stirring hear-say on your fine website?!?! So what? If I am going to pay ANYONE $40,000,000, I Gots to know, dew day momma bees a ho??

  41. Total lack of class and no one could have blamed Dez if he had clobbered the guy. You people who think it’s funny and have no problem with it apparently don’t respect for your own moms and lack class yourself. I don’t care how much money they are going to pay you, this question is out of line.

  42. Rapiestberger, Bryant was known as a potential prima donna and problem child. What better way to induce a negative response from this kid than bad mouthing his mama ?? I don’t think the question was appropriate by anyone, let alone a high management person in any company, particularly one as public as the NFL, but what Silver doesn’t say there is what the line of questioning was in general and what his intent was. However, if true, it’ll come back to haunt him. If I’m the Commish right about a minute or so after I read this article, I’m on the phone to Jeffy…

  43. Maybe Ireland’s mom is a hooker and he was just looking for some common ground? Don’t be so quick to judge.

  44. Dez Bryant wants to be a more sympathetic figure and Silver @ Yahoo is the perfect tool to accomplish this.
Anyway, lay off Ireland, first of all he did not ask if Dez mother was a prostitute, he asked “Yo momma a ho or what Dog?” A little low in the class department.
But we at FYouSports.com (about as reliable as Florio and Silver) have learned that the man was only looking for some freebies and not questioning Bryant’s character.

  45. blackglass
    Don’t forget he also cheated.
BTW may i ask why are you defending a drug dealer? Dez Bryants mom is a Drug Dealer, and Dez is a lazy thug.

  46. HA! The Jets fan is calling the Dolphins classless? That’s the epitome of the pot calling the kettle black. The sheer definition of “classless” is a Jets fan. Most Neanderthals were better educated, more well-spoken and possesed better social skills than your average Jets fan.
Don’t spout off about being classless if you’re a Jets fan, especially with Rex Ryan as the face of your franchise. (You remember him, huh? You know, the guy that goes and insults fans of another team in their city, and then whines when one of those fans shoots him a bird? Yeah, that’s class.)
His shtick might amuse you in New York, but it wears thin on the rest of the world. Then again, shiny objects amuse you guys, so that could explain why you’re so enamored with Rex’s bullshit. In fact, you’re so desperate for a winner that you’ll accept any bullshit, for that matter.

  47. we dont know under what context the question was asked. Obviously, Ireland didn’t ask every potential draftee that question. he must have had some specific reason for asking it. how do you know Bryant wasn’t blaming all his past problems on his mother and he said something that hinted that she was a prostitute and Ireland didnt ask a clarification question. Maybe Ireland wanted to test his temper and see if he would explode.

  48. Someone is spending way too much time in the thesaurus trying to look smart in a group where 99.6 percent of the people either a) don’t care or b) are not intelligent enough to reverse thesaurize the writings of a whistle blowing attention whore.

  49. Classic misguided white liberal intrusion making a minor incident worse. What have Rosenthal and Silver(stein) accomplished?
Thousands of bored pervs searching the net for “Dez Bryant mother/prostitute/naked/MILF/Ebony/mature/hot”.
Good work guys, keep that moral compass pointed in the right direction.

  50. who knows, Jeff could be the next Holmes………..on there way out of a good organization. What dumb**s would ask somthing like that? Look for Bill to show him the way out in a year or two.

  51. Someone is spending way too much time in the thesaurus trying to look smart in a group where 99.6 percent of the people either a) don’t care or b) are not intelligent enough to reverse thesaurize the writings of a whistle blowing attention whore.

  52. He should have answered, “she has not been a prostitue as long as your mother has!” I think Ireland would have crapped his pants.

  53. Gregg Rosenthal you are a piece of trash, for helping spread this false rumor. and having no evidence.

  54. What do you expect from a Dork? This is the most classless organization in the NFL. Pathetic. Another Dorkfin piece of scum.

  55. I dont think he is an A-list A-hole. Isnt this kid about to become a millionare from whichever team chooses him? His upbringing comes into play, and if his mom is a hoe than that goes towards his mental state. besides, maybe Jeff just wanted some action?

  56. Who cares as long as we win!!!!!!!!!!
bryant will probably have a heartattack in training camp.

  57. Wonder if Bryant would have been saying all this if he was drafted by Miami? What a load of crap! Ireland and Parcells leave Cowboys with Sparano….Jerry Jones inserts foot in mouth by phone video…….suddenly the cowboys have a story that sounds worse. Conspiracy theory? Yea maybe. But this just doesn’t ring true.

  58. Maybe Florio could speculate on his past, say he may have been a Timothy Leary test subject. Might as well milk the diminished mental capacity story angle for all it’s worth. Should be worth a few page hits.

  59. # KC_Phinsphan says: “this is a complete non-story written by someone who apparently sees the world through Green and White glasses….”
If you read Silver enough (NOT recommended), and watch’s his email comments/response sections for his responses such as:
    “Here’s a guess: You’re a white, Christian, heterosexual male? I thought so.”
You’ll understand that Silver’s glasses are Black and White… and Ireland just isn’t Mikey’s color.

I, for one, would like to see Commissioner Roger Goodall make a public statement that this is “… not acceptable behavior for an executive of the NFL, and that the NFL and its executives must uphold a higher standard of behavior. ”
Also very much expect a 2-game suspension of Ireland at Miami home games in 2010.

    (1) Learn to spell, you illiterate moron.
    (2) It does warrant a “turd alert.” Just because the Dolphins have been a mediocre (at best) football team over the past ten years doesn’t mean we should just ignore them.

No if you were LaGarrette Blount, you would have punched him in the face.

  73. If that was asked to Blount, I could ALMOST see it since he has an obvious mental side…but even then it would be crossing the line. Moms are off limits.

  74. I get that the GM wants to know how the players will react to adversity….but like, this is just absurd and doesn’t show anything

  76. I get the argument that a team is about to invest millions in a guy and want to do their due diligence. However, the question remains, “What was he going to do with this information?” What benefit does the Dolphins organization get from knowing whether or not this man’s mother was a prostitute? How does that information affect Bryant’s capacity to play football. If this is the kind of organization they’re running, I would have ended the interview and told the team not to draft m under any circumstances cause I wouldn’t play for such a classless organization.
