Jeff Ireland accused of lack of class

Just before the draft, we heard the most offensive job interview question we can imagine.

Dez Bryant was asked if his mom was a prostitute.

The wide receiver answered and didn’t show his anger.  Since then, Bryant was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.  And Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports reveals the man who asked the question used to work for America’s Team — current Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland.

We agree with Silver and the other ex-NFL players he spoke to: Ireland was unprofessional.  (Silver enjoyably goes further, calling Ireland “biggest jerk in the history job interviewers” and an “A-List A-hole.”  The whole article is worth a read.)

The rumors about Bryant’s family were out there, but a potential employer asking about it crosses a line. It wouldn’t happen in any other industry

The timing of this news is interesting.  We just read a piece about Ireland showing a more human side to the media. In it, Ireland said he hopes to develop as a person.

This story comes just after the Dolphins took some P.R. blows after Jason Taylor ‘s departure. Zach Thomas said that Bill Parcells wouldn’t even let him hold a farewell press conference at the team facility when he left the team in 2008.

Ireland doesn’t usually seem to care about his image, which is his right. We’ll see if that changes after the country hears this story, and more folks call him an “A-List A-Hole.”

Michael Silver is obviously pulling 98% of this out of his ass. Post coital draft depression or something. The guy that jumps out to me as the big “jerk” in this is Silver. Or Bryant.
Why whine about that in public? Methinks Dozy Bryant doth protest overly much. Bay-Bay Thomas mother is in federal prison along with his grandmother. 20 years and 40 years respectively for dealing cocaine. Thomas was up front about it and openly acknowledges the two were guilty. He asked them to stop. When he was about 10 years old.
Little wonder the Broncos took DeMaryius ahead of Dozy.

Another blown out of proportion story. Teams routinely ask ‘shock’ questions to gauge a response. Other professions do this too. In Dez’s case, perhaps you should be researching if the answer to the question is in fact ‘yes’ and the manner in which the question was asked. If the answer to the question is actually ‘yes’, then the question seems far less inappropriate.

  22. Andyman says: Apr 27, 2010 3:55 PM

Yeah, of course it doesn’t happen in other industries. How many other industries give $20+ million to stupid kids fresh out of college that have never proven themselves in the professional workplace?

We also have legalized prostitution in Nevada and would expect some questions similar to that.
Not something to expect from a G.M. though, maybe a personnel assistant who wants to be fired. Or even someone who holds a grudge, but way off for a G.M.

If Silver is trying to drum up sympathy for Doze Bryant, he is about 20 years too late. Bryant should have the Do Not Draft label stamped on his forehead.
Jeff Ireland may well be a jerk, but that has yet to be proven. Silver and Bryant give us ample evidence to prove their jerkdom every time they open their pie holes.

I’m not sure what profession you work in, but I assure you that I’ve never been asked a question anywhere close to this. Maybe it could come up if you were applying for a position in law enforcement, but that’s got to be about the only possible scenario where you should legitimately be asked that question.
And if his mother was a prostitute, how would that have any impact at all on Bryant’s potential ability to play WR in the NFL? The cicumstances under which he spent his childhood have been well documented. However, his mother’s willingness to exchange sex for money doesn’t make the question any less inappropriate.

LYING TO THE NCAA for his pimp daddy Dieon and we are supposed to believe him? Yea, right….He just pissed cause he wanted to be on South Beach….Gotta luv it..BTW….not all of us season ticket holders are pissed that Jason “on wanna be on TV one more time” Taylor is gone, nor did it bother me that Zack did not get a farewell. If he wanted one he should have put one on for himself or done what others have done, take out a paid ad in the newspapers to say bye bye. This organization does not do intro or exit interviews and they have stated it so.

It is never appropriate to ask a question like that. Why would anything think that? It is irrelevant. I am shocked we didn’t hear a report about Bryant assaulting him.

  39. piemaster says: Apr 27, 2010 4:12 PM

Am I the only one who thinks this isn’t that big a deal? Sure it might be considered an ‘inapropriate’ question and if I was asked this in an interview to be, say, an administrative clerk, I would probably just walk out. But this was an interview to win a contract that could be worth tens of millions of dollars in guaranteed money. If someone was thinking about offering me that much money, they could whip out my dick and measure it if they liked.

  40. Panda_Claus says: Apr 27, 2010 4:12 PM

That’s not a shocking question, but a classless and inappropriate question. Never a need to act unprofessional like that. Those sorts of questions would never fly in a standard job interview. That’s a one-way ticket to a big legal headache.
Now a shocking question to ask would be like “Who do you think the Bills will beat in the Super Bowl?”, you know, something totally off the wall.

  42. marinofreakout says: Apr 27, 2010 4:14 PM

i read that biased article. it sucked.
the question was a blatantly obvious attempt to ruffle the feathers of a player who has clear character red flags. nice strategic move. the GM of the miami dolphins doesnt care what anyone thinks about it either.
the authors childish comparison “what if the same thing happened in other industries?” is baseless. yea what if the same thing happened in other industries? what if scores of criminal offenders with 2.0 gpa’s flooded REAL job industries? think about that. the fact of the matter is, the nfl, and other sports for that matter are extremely atypical industries and because of that the “interview” process is, and should be, atypical as well.

  45. ernv says: Apr 27, 2010 4:16 PM

Silver is as always full of it. First, if I am a GM considering paying a guarantee of more than 10 million dollars, for sure I will make sure that I ask EVERY question that comes to my mind. I want to see how the kid is going to react! I want to see if he can handle tough questions the right way. This is not college, it is a PROFESSION. Also, if the Dolphins are so bad handling free agents, why did Karlos Dansby and Marshall sign with them. Of course money matters, but they understand that this is non-sense organization.

  46. bertochini says: Apr 27, 2010 4:20 PM

  47. 305phinphan says: Apr 27, 2010 4:20 PM

It might have been an inappropriate question but I’m sure he asked it to see what kind of reaction he would get from him. Bryant has had a lot of questions surrounding his upbringing and past so it was probably asked to him to see how he can handle the situation.
Jet Fans that posted above don’t get me started on Rex Ryans fat arse flipping people the bird, telling them to fu@k off and worse of all making everyone suffer by taking his shirt off and exposing to the world he has no belly button.
It could be worse, Ireland could have raped a girl in a bathroom at a club, or got drunk and decided to drive and kill a pedestrian, or fight dogs and kill them.

Just another example of Parcells and Ireland’s arrogance. They have done a decent job and I am grateful that they have turned a disaster into a very solid team, but they’ve crapped on Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor, two of the classiest and greatest players in franchise history. It’ s just annoying that these guys act as if they’re god’s gift to football and Parcells hasn’t won a super bowl since 1990, and Ireland has zero super bowl rings I think. Nonetheless it’s 100x better than having Cam Cameron or Dave Wannstedt.

  56. Larry says: Apr 27, 2010 4:26 PM

Rapiestberger, Bryant was known as a potential prima donna and problem child. What better way to induce a negative response from this kid than bad mouthing his mama ?? I don’t think the question was appropriate by anyone, let alone a high management person in any company, particularly one as public as the NFL, but what Silver doesn’t say there is what the line of questioning was in general and what his intent was. However, if true, it’ll come back to haunt him. If I’m the Commish right about a minute or so after I read this article, I’m on the phone to Jeffy…

  57. Mike D says: Apr 27, 2010 4:28 PM

Anyway, lay off Ireland, first of all he did not ask if Dez mother was a prostitute, he asked “Yo momma a ho or what Dog?” A little low in the class department.
But we at FYouSports.com (about as reliable as Florio and Silver) have learned that the man was only looking for some freebies and not questioning Bryant’s character.

Don’t spout off about being classless if you’re a Jets fan, especially with Rex Ryan as the face of your franchise. (You remember him, huh? You know, the guy that goes and insults fans of another team in their city, and then whines when one of those fans shoots him a bird? Yeah, that’s class.)
His shtick might amuse you in New York, but it wears thin on the rest of the world. Then again, shiny objects amuse you guys, so that could explain why you’re so enamored with Rex’s bullshit. In fact, you’re so desperate for a winner that you’ll accept any bullshit, for that matter.

  61. Dayton Dolfan says: Apr 27, 2010 4:31 PM

we dont know under what context the question was asked. Obviously, Ireland didn’t ask every potential draftee that question. he must have had some specific reason for asking it. how do you know Bryant wasn’t blaming all his past problems on his mother and he said something that hinted that she was a prostitute and Ireland didnt ask a clarification question. Really?
Come on. You and I and everyone else in these parts knows that the “real world” and its “real workforce” is completely overrrun with unprincipled, socially retarded, illiterate morons–many of whom have posted in response to this story.
I get it. This site, like so many others, has become a forum for bitter losers to vent about talented people. Fine. But let’s try to maintain some perspective.

Jeff Ireland apologised to Bryant and announced as much.

This type of behavior is inappropriate, uprofessional and likely illegal, unless he asked that of everyone. Did he ask that question of white recruits???
I, for one, would like to see Commissioner Roger Goodall make a public statement that this is “… not acceptable behavior for an executive of the NFL, and that the NFL and its executives must uphold a higher standard of behavior. ”
Also very much expect a 2-game suspension of Ireland at Miami home games in 2010.

What did his mom get on the Wonderlick?
    Too soon?
The question should be what did you get
on the wonderlic since you can’t even spell
    wonderlic

Ireland needs to borrow a strategy from Rush Limbaugh and phrase it as,
“Does the person who gave birth to you receive monetary compensation for engaging in intercourse with other males?”
That’s a Rush way to ask it. If it was asked that way, it’s a non issue.

I bet it was an intentional misspelling. Then again it could be the proper spelling for the test administered to people that want to major in drug dealing with a minor in trickin’.
    Wait
Does this mean I have to administer an apology to Bryant now?

Another blown out of proportion story. Teams routinely ask ‘shock’ questions to gauge a response. Other professions do this too.
    *********************************************
What other profession? I’ve never been on an interview where this has occurred. In any REAL profession, you’d get your ass sued by asking this kind of shit. While we’re at it, why not ask the guy if his dad is a pimp or sells crack to teenagers? Let’s see how racist we can make the questions.

Lets talk more about the steelers rapests! This story doesnt warrant a turd alert
    *********************************************
    (1) Learn to spell, you illiterate moron.
    (2) It does warrant a “turd alert.” Just because the Dolphins have been a mediocre (at best) football team over the past ten years doesn’t mean we should just ignore them.

Jets fan calling Ireland classless……….now that is some funny shit. Sweep sweep jets fans. See you soon senior weiner!

How do we know it wasnt a question set to trigger any violent response? To see if he can hold it in and keep going? So he doesnt cause penalties, loss of yards, etc..

    Attention NFC East CB’s.
You may now proceed your verbal assaults starting game day.

No if you were LaGarrette Blount, you would have punched him in the face.

I get that the GM wants to know how the players will react to adversity….but like, this is just absurd and doesn’t show anything
This site mocked Stafford for joking with the 49’ers and their idiot questions….yet stick up for Bryant? Figures

  98. hnirobert says: Apr 27, 2010 7:15 PM

    @ Ron
It was purposely spelled that way, you douche.

  99. Buckster222 says: Apr 27, 2010 7:40 PM

The questioned asked of Dez Bryant is just another example of how these “White Boys” try and humiliates an “African-American” at any cost! The $hit I’m reading on here makes me laugh at being a “HUMAN”! Yet, we wonder why the “WORLD” hates Americans! Your settle little bull$hit!

  100. DirtDawg55 says: Apr 27, 2010 10:37 PM

Was he asking an interview question or trying to score a “date”?

  101. NE49ers says: Apr 28, 2010 3:02 PM

I get the argument that a team is about to invest millions in a guy and want to do their due diligence. However, the question remains, “What was he going to do with this information?” What benefit does the Dolphins organization get from knowing whether or not this man’s mother was a prostitute? How does that information affect Bryant’s capacity to play football. If this is the kind of organization they’re running, I would have ended the interview and told the team not to draft m under any circumstances cause I wouldn’t play for such a classless organization.
