First off Krow, Kobe’s and Rothlisburger’s situations are far more comparable than Dez Bryant’s. Kobe got away with rape too…and he rapes a white chick in Colorado! But regarding Dez Bryant’s mom, asking Dez if she was a prostitute seems like a legit question when you dig into her background. She got pregnant at 14 years old and had him at 15. She was convicted of selling cocaine, so is prostitution really that big of a stretch?
But the part of the story you people aren’t understanding is that the questions aren’t asked because the team wants to know the answer…they want to see how someone reacts in a tense situation, and how they handle adversity. Going into the interview with Dez, there is ZERO doubt that Smith knew about his mom’s cocaine arrests, as did every other GM in the league.

What Ben did and Ireland did is different. Ireland asked a question Ben did alot more then talk.
I dont see anything wrong with the question. They ask people all kinds of things like that. Saying the word prostitute isnt bad. If they ask people if they use drugs or there family uses drugs and stuff like that. I think asking if a guys mom is a prostitute is along the same lines.
I mean IM sure they ask these kids what there parents do for a living. Well if Dez’s mom is a whore thats what she does for a living. Its not the Dolphins fault that that rumor was going around. But they did the right thing by clearing it up.
Im sure if the Dolphins didnt ask the question and get the answer people would still be wondering if she is or isnt a whore. So if you think about it Ireland did Dez a favor by squashing the rumor.

As a Dolphins fan, I was a little embarassed by this.
Then I heard some of the other “shock” questions that get asked of players and I’m less embarassed.
Ireland’s question might have been personal, but if the team is considering paying this guy millions – it’s fair game. If my employer would pay me millions, I’d reveal bedroom secrets if they wanted.
The reality is there is no rule in place that says you cannot ask these questions. And if there was no question that Dez’s mother was a prostitute, then the question wouldn’t have been asked. His mother is a convicted felon that had him at age 15 – is it really *that* offensive question to be asked?
The only people who should be offended by that are people who’s mothers ARE prostitutes, IMO

In turn, the league should be happy to agree to such restrictions. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will miss six or more weeks of the 2010 season because his conduct, at its core, makes the NFL and its teams look bad. How can the question that the Dolphins posed to Dez Bryant be viewed any differently?

Typical knee-jerk reactionary bullshit. One guy asked a draft prospect if his mom’s a whore, so now this needs to be addressed by the league and the union? Please.
If the Dolphins were legitimately interested in drafting Dez Bryant at their #12 slot, or anywhere else for that matter, then they’re looking at giving this kid millions of dollars guaranteed in his rookie contract. If it’s a real possibility that his mom’s a prostitute, I think the team would be irresponsible not to find out. With that kind of money on the line they’d be shirking their duties not to know whether or not the mother of one of their highest paid employees is a risk factor–a risk to his performance and availability and a risk to the image of the team.
Having said that, everything depends on how the issue was raised. I think they handled it poorly if Ireland sat down and just blurted out, “So I hear your mom’s a hooker.” However, there are ways of getting him to talk about his childhood, his home life, etc… There’s other ways to get to the bottom of things than a blunt statement or question.
However, if I were the Dolphins I wouldn’t rely on the word of a kid who has a lot to gain (or lose) in it. I’d probably hire someone to check it out. Find out what you’re getting into. Don’t give millions of guaranteed dollars to a young kid whose mother might be a whore. That would be a risky proposition.

Whether you agree with the approach or not, the reason the question was asked was to get under Bryant’s skin. Of course it was offensive and inappropriate. Of course it was meant to piss of Bryant. The whole point was to see how he would react to that sort of attack.
This doesn’t make it right, but EVERY TEAM in the NFL asks these players these same types of questions. It just so happens that Ireland was the one called out for it. I’m not making this stuff up. What about the team who asked the blantantly racist question (which is illegal during a job interview, what Ireland asked is not) to Toby Gerhart about if he felt entitled because he was a white running back. But for some reason no one seems to have a problem with that. Maybe because Gerhart understands the process and isn’t a little bitch about it and throwing team execs under the bus (or maybe it was the Vikings GM who asked him).

To all the idoiots claiming this is a relavent question because ” he is about to be given millions of dollars”…. how would you like it if at YOUR next interveiw the employer asked if your mom was still a slut from the neighborhood because he “knew” her back in the day? Or better yet asked you if he could come over and have your wife slide down his pole a couple of times until it was time to giver her a protein shake?
Bryant’s mom WAS/USED (you know past tense words meaning THEN NOT NOW). I especially like those posters asking is she I am willing to bet their lives they won’t ask that young man that question in person. And for all of you non-black people making statements on this post…. The only way a black player will ask Bryant that question in a game is if HE WANTS TO FIGHT. No one gets to choose their parents, and if that was the way Dez Bryant’s mom had to pay the rent and put food on the table, what of it? Pretty much every “sexual favor” in this world is purchased with some sort of “favor” if you get down to it. Try going home to wifey and tell her you lost your job and will have to sell her jewelry to pay the mortgage this month. See how anxious she is to get down with you.
But Silver and other media hacks seem to want to shake this to death. I’d venture to say that at least 10 times as many people now know that Dez Bryant’s poor fat dumb old Mom may have sold her body at some point in her life. Whats the big deal here? His mother is a known drug user and dealer. The question then becomes relevant. When theyre debating whether or not to hand you $15 million guaranteed, theyre going to want to make sure your not surrounded by a Pacman Jones type posse that will get you into trouble.
Also bear in mind that Parcells is a no nonsense guy who isnt putting up with any divas. Dez has a reputation as being one so maybe they were trying to see if he could keep his composure when angered. they werent making fun of the kid, so lets all relax. You know, right about now there are scores of prostitutes taking righteous offense. So what if his mother had him when she was 14 or 15. So what if she is a drug dealer and he had a shitty life. Why are these football analysts and interviewers making such a negative thing about this? If anything they should be amazed that someone was able to come out of that type of life and make it as far as he has. I can’t stand the Cowboys, but I hope this guy becomes a hall of famer. It’s obvious that no one is questioning his talent, but leave his family out of it. It sounds like the only people she was hurting was herself and her son. I would understand if they were hurting other people, but why make such a big deal about this situation. Most people that went through what he went through end up doing what their parents do, starting at a young age. He is past that age, he is good to go. I just don’t know about having Irvin as his mentor. Didn’t he get in trouble for tag teaming some girl down in Florida with his brother?
