Kevin Smith welcomes competition from Jahvid Best

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz has made no secret of his love for Jahvid Best, from trading up to select Best to getting excited when watching Best’s highlight videos. But while Schwartz’s excitement might seem like bad news for Lions running back Kevin Smith, Smith says he doesn’t see it that way.

“It’s a part of the business,” Smith said. “I’ve never been one to shy away from competition.”

Smith started the first 13 games of the 2009 season at running back, but he suffered a torn ACL in December. The Lions’ concern about Smith’s health contributed to the team’s decision to select Best, but Smith says he thinks he’ll be ready to go by the start of the season.

“Camp time is my goal,” Smith said. “I can really start and get involved in some team activities. But, until now, I’ll just be doing my individual stuff and continue to work out.”

So Smith thinks he’ll be healthy enough to win the running back competition, and it’s a competition he says he’s looking forward to.

“I think that he’s a good addition,” Smith said of Best. “I’m all welcome. I like that type of stuff – anything that can help us win.”

  1. Uhhhhhh, good luck 34k…..
Best is the guy, at least until he takes another concussion!

  2. Maybe when you come back this year Kevin, you won’t be running like a damn coward. That’s exactly what got you hurt. You looked like you were trying out for “Dancing with the Stars” when you got the ball back there.
Hit the hole, or make your own!

  3. What? Kevin Smith welcomes a pie eating competition from Jahvid Best?
    Wait…sorry…wrong Kevin Smith.

  4. Kevin Smith would be a bottom 5 starting Running Back if he didn’t have “competition.” Hopefully Best, Smith and Morris can keep each other fresh and un-injured.
It’s too bad he is coming off an ACL, because he is one of few player left that have trade value.

  5. Economics 101: 1st round money starts over 3rd round money. Detroit has to be a bit worried though, both backs have sustained serious injuries within the last year. If they can’t stay healthy throughout the entire season then, at some point, DeDe Dorsey will be getting the bulk of the carries………

  6. Wait do you people actually watch football or just come onto this website and talk nonsense? Kevin Smith is pretty damn good and was having a pretty good year before his injury. I would say he is top 10 easy. Morons.

  7. JAJ – You are way off, Kevin Smith does not suck. Also if the Lions are smart, they would use both RB’s and mix it up. I think Best would be the better option on 3rd down issues as well. I just cant wait to see how the Lions are going to use these RB. Also dont forget Lions also picked up Bell like 1-2 months before the draft.

  8. I don’t think either back is a true starter in the league but if they both can come back and stay away from inury, the duo could be pretty interesting to watch.

  9. The Lions just need to remember to not congratulatory smack Best on the helmet after a good run-it will take him out of the competition. I heard Ford was going after TARP money to sign Best and Suh.

  10. dede dorsey is being overlooked. he brings more to the table than kevin smith. both on the field and in the locker room. He has good average yards per run and is versatile.

. ……Umm I don’t think the Lions are “worried” at all…..if they were worried about Best they wouldn’t have drafted him….and as for Smith…not like he is worth shit anyway so I doubt they are worried about his status

  12. m2karateman-
Kevin Smith is a coward? He played the whole season with two seperated shoulders, I bet you couldn’t do a desk job for 3 months with two seperated shoulders.

  13. Kevin Smith was running very well last year before he got hurt. In fact, he was one of the only bright spots for the team in the game when he did get hurt.
We need a two back system to keep defenses off balance… Do you people even watch football or just hate on Detroit because it’s the popular thing to do?

  14. Smith should love this b/c it will allow him to cut down on carries thus hits on him
Both Smith and Best will share carries and both be used significantly

As a Lions fan, I love your enthusiasm and optimism. However, Kevin Smith is not a top 10 RB, and never will be… Moron.

  16. how has nobody mentioned the scwartz comment about how he get’s off to best’s game film?
The 2010 starter at runningback for the detroit lions is written on the inside of their head coaches underpants.
