Kevin Smith welcomes competition from Jahvid Best

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz has made no secret of his love for Jahvid Best, from trading up to select Best to getting excited when watching Best’s highlight videos. But while Schwartz’s excitement might seem like bad news for Lions running back Kevin Smith, Smith says he doesn’t see it that way.

“It’s a part of the business,” Smith said. “I’ve never been one to shy away from competition.”

Smith started the first 13 games of the 2009 season at running back, but he suffered a torn ACL in December. The Lions’ concern about Smith’s health contributed to the team’s decision to select Best, but Smith says he thinks he’ll be ready to go by the start of the season.

“Camp time is my goal,” Smith said. “I can really start and get involved in some team activities. But, until now, I’ll just be doing my individual stuff and continue to work out.”

So Smith thinks he’ll be healthy enough to win the running back competition, and it’s a competition he says he’s looking forward to.

“I think that he’s a good addition,” Smith said of Best. “I’m all welcome. I like that type of stuff - anything that can help us win.”
