Nike stands by Roethlisberger

It’s going to take more than sexual assault allegations originating from a nightclub’s bathroom and an NFL suspension for Nike to drop Ben Roethlisberger as an endorser.

The shoe company confirmed last week that Roethlisberger remains part of their “roster of athletes,” according to the New York Times.  Roethlisberger has previously been used to sell the company’s unfortunately named
“Marauder” cleats.

No matter what you think happened in Milledgeville, we’re a little surprised the shoe company still chooses to be associated with Roethlisberger.  Even in the best of times, Roethlisberger is no Tiger Woods when it comes to selling product.  Why bother?

    Maybe because they realize that athletes aren’t necessarily choirboys … especially ones who have been railroaded by a politically correct media. That’s their story and they’re stickin’ to it which is their right. The consumer will decide with their feet, as it should be in a free country.

    Nike supports cheaters, rapists, moving business outside of it’s home country and cheap foreign near slave labour.

    unless you’re convicted of murder 1, with indisputable video evidence, a positive DNA match, left your drivers license at the scene, left your fingerprints on the murder weapon, left your semen on the couch, had your grandmother identify and testify against you at the trial, and agreed to sign a full confession admitting to every aspect of your crime, Nike will not drop you as an endorser of their products.
    and i think i’m OK with that.

    Obviously drug and alcohol indulgence, cheating on your spouse, supplying alcohol to minors is all fair game.

  30. trickbunny says: Apr 28, 2010 9:12 PM

    Nike probably thinks that, as long as the headlines and accusations are in the rear view mirror, Rapistberger is bankable again.
    Basically, they’re not gonna drop him now because peoples’ memories are short. Apparently, if you’re rich and famous and you have “fans”, you can still rake in the cash whether you’re a psychotic dog murderer, or you stab people in a Georgia parking lot and get your friends to take the rap, or you sexually molest girls in bars while being shielded by your bodyguards.
    And don’t worry, folks. All the Steelers need to do is win 3 or 4 of their first 5 games, and all the yinzers who claim they don’t want Rapenstein back will suddenly be smitten with him again- even though Dixon or Batch or that old fat guy (Leftwich)- will be playing QB.

  31. robert ethan says: Apr 28, 2010 9:14 PM

    I’m not sure how the contracts are structured, but I imagine that Nike would just mothball the guy until things blow over. There is no need to come out with a definitive severing of ties.
    If you go out on a date and have a “myehhh..” feeling about the person, you don’t have to dis them forever on the spot. You just say, “Thanks, we should do this again, I’ll call you when I’m free….blah, blah…”. If they make a big issue about dumping Ben they come out as front runners and bandwagoneers.

    I have heard the same thing. My source tells me Nike is coming out with a new shoe called “The Perv” The adds will have Ben running around in the new shoes with his pants around his ankles yelling, “you can do what you want with it” As the voice in the background says, the shoe’s for the ones that want to get away, the perv by Nike.

    Is Rothlesberger a homosexual?
    Lots of times those homos try to hide their true feelings by playing man games all the while looking forward to getting behind center and showers after the game.

    It’s just too bad that in this internet age Ben can’t sue all of you nameless, faceless morons that call him a rapist. Then again, what would he even sue you for? The spank magazines you keep in your mama’s basement or the $3.75 in your bank accounts??

I think that Nike shows a lot of class and guts, sticking by a man who was wrongfully accused and targeted for a quick money grab. It’s so easy to dump someone that has been thrust into a controversial situation, instead of sticking by them. Kudos to Nike. It’s so easy to come onto a message board and join in with the hundreds that call this man a rapist, just to be part of the fun. You all have no guts.

    We would all agree with you. The only difference is, Mikey was CONVICTED and we were all able to see physical evidence of dog killing and more lovely, torture. However, in case you missed the ending, the other guy was not CHARGED with a crime.
    I’d say it’s worse to be a convicted felon than to not be charged with a crime, just MY opinion.

    * * * * *
    I don’t think Tiger had his wife’s permission first.
    And BTW I think a lot of people really need to get a life, and understand that nothing you say here means squat. Bottom line is Ben made a mistake, there was enough doubt to not file charges, he will be serving his punishment, he will be back playing football if he keeps his nose clean and life will go on. I suggest most of you try to do the same with your life. Your posts on every story about Ben and all the warmed over/left over nicknames for Ben and Steelers won’t mean a thing in the grand scheme of life. Lot’s of time being wasted. Go do some charity work. Sheesh.

    Vick is still on the roster as well, Nike just opts not to use them.
    And since they are not using them, severing ties would be pointless grandstanding for a company that (a) doesn’t need an increase in market share, (b) has a strong brand already, (c) won;t be hurt by the small PR hit.
    After all, when Ben comes back he’ll suit up in a Steeler uniform with a Nike logo on it. And shoes with Nike logos on them. It’s unavoidable.
    Nike won’t lose anything from it, and they know it. They dominate that market.

    And to those saying Ben did nothing wrong, think about this: Roethlisberger has been accused 3 times in a year of the exact same thing: rape. If this were merely a case of drunk chicks looking for cash payouts wouldn’t virtually every NFL player with a contract worth over $1 million/yr be a target? Where are the women accusing Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, etc. of rape? Why is Roethlisberger the ONLY target for these kinds of accusations?

    +++++++++++++++++
    Are you kidding me? You consider this ‘insignificant’? Ask you mother, sister, wife/girlfriend how insignificant it is to be raped.
    No means no, and “she was drunk” is not a defence. Period.

  111. Deb says: Apr 29, 2010 10:36 PM

    @NFLchick …
    It’s not insignificant to be raped. But it’s annoying to keep hearing the stupid and ignorant ranting about nonexistent rapes. The DA said Roethlisberger NEVER admitted sex with that woman. So that means he never gave a “she was drunk” defense. Based on the results of the pelvic exam, there was no vaginal intercourse. That may be why she initially told both police and doctors NO when asked if she’d been raped or had sex. You’re right: No means no.
    The story about the bodyguard barring the door has been disputed by multiple witnesses. She was out of sight only 10 minutes. There’s no forensic evidence of rape. Multiple witnesses said the woman followed Ben from bar to bar and engaged in mutual sexual conduct with him all evening. She changed her story repeatedly. The DA said even with her testimony, he didn’t have enough evidence to get probable cause for an arrest, let alone enough to obtain a conviction.
    It’s “insignificant” because there was no rape, which you’d know if you’d researched instead of following the crowd. Period.

  112. badthings says: Apr 30, 2010 9:05 AM

    Ya Deb just keep making excuses. I have a question for you. What other athlete has been accused of rape twice in the last year? No one but Ben. Wow what bad luck on his part huh?
    Just keep making up excuses.
    If your qb wasn’t a sexual predator this wouldn’t be an issue huh?

  113. Deb says: Apr 30, 2010 10:51 AM

    @badthings …
    Making up excuses is when you say “Ben raped her because …” I’m saying the crimes never happened. I also said Ben has set himself up for this by being a reckless egomaniacal jackass … hope no one ever “makes excuses” for me like that. Don’t know what other athletes have been accused twice. Don’t care. Only care about the evidence in these cases.
    In the first, the court has copies of the woman’s text messages two days after the “rape” that she can’t wait to see Ben again and if things don’t work out with her boyfriend she’s going after Ben. In the second, the pelvic exam showed there was no intercourse. The accuser was dragged to the cops by a woman Ben threw out of the party. Same woman who made the rape charge while the accuser denied it. Same woman who claimed the bodyguard blocked her from the door. Same woman who took the accuser to the cops the next day when she changed her story.
    If you had one-third a brain and this didn’t involve a team you hate, this wouldn’t be an issue, huh?

    Nike could care less. Ben hasn’t been convicted of anything. Just accusations from skeeze who stand to make money by virtue of accusations alone. Most celebs will pay just to make the issue go away.
    I hope Ben has finally learned his lesson to stop hanging out with skeeze.

  119. Deb says: Apr 30, 2010 6:35 PM

    @badthings and other simple-minded people who can count but can’t read case files …
    He’s not by a long shot the only professional athlete player accused of sexual assault. Nor has he been accused three times. He certainly brought the second accusation as well as the other speculation on himself by being a reckless jackass throwing frat parties in Satan shirts when he should have been keeping a low profile. When you do stupid things, you have to pay the consequences. Stupid does not equal rapist. Since you don’t seem willing or intellectually capable of reading the documentation for yourselves, here you go:
    The Nevada case is bizarre and complicated. But I’ll whittle it down to a couple of bare facts. Ben had a one-night stand with an older hotel employee in 2007. A year later, she ran up significant medical bills after a breakdown following a convoluted siutation involving her ex-lover’s wife. She filed a $3 million lawsuit against Ben claiming rape. The police said there’s no evidence any crime occurred. Among the documentation in the case are her own text messages sent an hour after the “rape” in which she was talking baby talk with her “boyfriend.” They also have text messages from her sent two days later in which she says she’s looking foward to seeing Ben at the VIP dinner and thinks her boyfriend looks like Ben. She says if things don’t work out with her boyfriend, she’s going after Ben.
    Now, badthings, I know you’re not too bright. But even you have to admit those texts aren’t the kinds of things women say about their rapists.
    In Georgia, the DA said the accuser chased Ben all over town trying to get his attention. He said the accuser and Ben were carrying on with each other. The DA also said another sorority sister pissed Ben off. Apparently she started ragging on him about the woman in Nevada. So Ben threw her out of the party. That same sorority sister and a friend then tried to get back into the party, but Officer Barravecchio kept them out.
    THEY are the ones who dragged the girl to the cops and told them she’d been raped. She said she had not. THEY are the ones who told police Barravecchio guarded the bathroom and wouldn’t let them in. Many other witnesses said that’s not true. THEY are the ones who went to the cops with the girl the next day when she changed her story and said she had been raped. The medical exam said otherwise.
    ALL of this is in the case files.
    Now it’s big news in Milledgeville. So another local girl goes to the police and says, “Hey, I was at a party at Ben’s, and he dropped his pants and said, ‘Do with me as you will!'” She was sooo traumatized, she went back to his house again the next week. He got drunk and tried to put his hand up her skirt. OH MY GOSH SHE WAS ASSAULTED!!! But she decided not to press charges. How magnanimous. A drunk guy at a party tries to stick his hand up a girl’s skirt. Wow, that’s never happened before.
    Now there’s a media feeding frenzy. A lawyer goes on a radio show and says, “Hey, I was investigating Ben for something just like that Milledgeville thing.” No client name. No details. No charges filed. No formal accusation. Nothing. Just a lawyer playing Big Man on the Radio. Grabbing his 15 minutes. No doubt he got a phone call from Ben’s attorneys telling him to put up or shut up. Before the day was over, he fell all over himself RETRACTING EVERY SINGLE WORD.
    Boys and girls, that is not a third accusation.
    Now you little kids can throw this homer crap at me all you want. But I’m a grownup, a rape survivor, the sister of a criminal defense attorney, and someone who takes this stuff seriously. I’m following the evidence and you’re carrying on like kindergartners pissed off because you didn’t get your way. You wanted the rival QB to get charged; he wasn’t. He wasn’t because there wasn’t any credible evidence against him. There wasn’t any credible evidence against him because he’s an idiot, not a rapist.
    badthings … I’m not repeating this again so stop asking. Try a remedial reading course.

  120. badthings says: Apr 30, 2010 7:59 PM

    No matter how many paragraphs you type or how many childish insults you throw at people, the facts are the same.
    Your qb is the ONLY nfl player with three rape accusations, and this doesn’t seem to make a bit of difference to you because you will always be in Pittsburgh groupie denial mode.

    Sure spend a lot of time trying to justify your blind excuse making for the only pro football player – out of about 3,000 active – to be accused of rape twice in the last year.
    But of course, it’s both women’s fault, they were both gold diggers, and it happens to all the football players – except of course, the other 2,999 active players.
    Keep trying.
