Source: Ryan Clady tore patellar tendon playing basketball

The unbridled enthusiasm coming from the Broncos in the wake of the Thomas-Tebow round-one haul has hit a relatively major snag.

As Mike Klis of the Denver Post reported earlier today, tackle Ryan Clady suffered a potentially serious knee injury while doing something unrelated to football.  Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the injury is believed to be a torn patellar tendon.  The source says the injury occurred while Clady was playing basketball.

If that’s the case, Clady likely will miss all of the 2010 season.  A first-round pick in 2008, Clady has started all 32 regular-season games of his career, and he was named to the Pro Bowl and the Associated Press All-Pro team after the 2009 season.

Also, if anyone is interested in signing Flozell Adams, it may be a good idea to get a deal done before the Broncos make a play for him.

At least he didn’t hurt his neck by trying to put a hat on that was too small like Richie Sexon did.

  2. Citizen Strange says: Apr 28, 2010 4:49 PM

Does Ryan Clady love football as much as Josh McDaniels?
If so, then the injury shouldn’t matter.

    denver has the best luck.
    minus a franchise Qb
    minus a franchise WR
    minus a franchise LT
minus a defense really ( sorry bailey & Dummer)
“all we need is tebow baby!!!!”
    go get em guys

I think I can speak for Orton/Quinn/Tebow when I say “Crap.”
Maybe we can bring in OL JaMarcus Russell after Al cuts him. He could also provide depth at nose tackle.

  5. Brewster says: Apr 28, 2010 4:51 PM

Tough break for the Broncos and especially for Clady. Hope he makes a 100% recovery.

I love it Florio… sometimes you write like you actually think league/ team officials/ insiders actually read your crappy little blog… hilarious!

Bad news for Broncos. As a Raider fan I extend my condolences.
We want you at full strength when we beat you, and I wouldn’t wish injury on any team or player.

  8. Mattchew182 says: Apr 28, 2010 4:54 PM

Now that sucks you go from having one of the premier left tackles in the NFL to having Flo Leg Whip Adams. Merriman better watch his knees around this guy all he can do is flail his old useless legs at you to stop you from sacking the QB. Man right after the draft too I wonder how McDaniels will handle this. Clady might be the next one run out of Denver by Josh Mini Me McDaniels.

  9. BroncFanOr says: Apr 28, 2010 4:56 PM

What an idiot. What’s with these morons putting their careers at risk over pick up basketball games?

  10. Chad Anderson says: Apr 28, 2010 4:58 PM

OUCH! As a Bronco fan that is about as bad as the news could get.
Any truth to the rumor McDaniels was behind this? He’s trying to get rid of ALL Shanahan draft picks. Dumerville better watch out. . .

  11. boltmancraft says: Apr 28, 2010 5:01 PM

As a Charger fan, I should be happy. BUT, the man is probably the best tackle in the NFL, and a torn patella tendon is not something to gloat about, no matter who he plays for. I hope he has a speedy recovery and returns to his team as good as new. Beating Denver won’t be nearly as satisfying if he’s not 100%.

I’m not claiming to be the athlete Clady is, but I hear about this all the time. A guy plays a different sport in the offseason and tears something. I play pickup basketball weekly. I got elbowed in the face once…thats about it…these guys are fragile.

You know, if “tacious” can’t stand Florio and these articles then get off the site. Go somewhere else and bother other people . You really are a total bore. Try complaining to the mirror. Better yet follow bowling if you need excitement.

    Better luck next year, boys.

Huge loss- Clady is arguably the best LT in the NFL. Huge.

  18. DieHardSkinsFan21 says: Apr 28, 2010 5:06 PM

McDaniels deserves that 100%. He is a total douche just like his idol Belisuck.

  19. ognee says: Apr 28, 2010 5:06 PM

Jamarcus Russell has very long arms…maybe the Raiders and Denver cam work out a deal. I’d say it would be a much quicker transition for Russell to convert to LT than Tebow to QB????

  20. johanneschimpo says: Apr 28, 2010 5:06 PM

That’s awesome. Chargers win the AFC West by default.

  21. Pop T says: Apr 28, 2010 5:07 PM

Ravens have Gaithers available, he is pretty good. The problem would be what the Broncos have to offer in return.

    ARGH! Such a stud.
Still, and I am gonna sound irrational here, but: we’ll survive. He had a TON of penalties last year that we couldn’t surmount with our anemic offense. Now maybe we will stay in first/10 than first/15-20.
START TEBOW. We are gonna need a QB that moves.

  26. Hillbilly Jim says: Apr 28, 2010 5:13 PM

  29. peskys_pole says: Apr 28, 2010 5:18 PM

Wondering what type of baseketball game?
Pick up or team endorsed charity game?
We have 1-2 games here a year, where some of the Pats play a charity game against the fire or police dept.
just 2 weeks ago, the Patriots sent Gostkowski, and Edelman to play.
There would be big ramifications if either of those guys got hurt.

  30. 4for4PhillyFan says: Apr 28, 2010 5:18 PM

I find it hilarious how people are always criticizing Florio’s take on things, yet they continue to read his commentaries day in and day out.

  31. Midway Monster says: Apr 28, 2010 5:19 PM

    @BroncFanOr
You’re right. They should lock em up all off season. At least if he was just raping some chick in a dirty bathroom stall he would be available for 10/12 games this year. Clady you are obviously an idiot…

  32. dave says: Apr 28, 2010 5:22 PM

if playing basketball was allowable in his contract, then no harm no foul in that regard
if he’s specifically not allowed to play any other sport, even a friendly game of basketball, then he could be looking at having to re-pay some of the bonus, if the injury is serious
i’m guessing it’s something not too serious and he’ll have plenty of time left still in the off season to rehab , he’s already had the surgery on it anyway

Yeah, Clady out for the year with a basketball injury. Non-story.
4-12 Broncos. Has a nice ring to it.

Wow – tough break for Clady – hope for a total recovery. Not really good news for Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow, or Tom Brandstater either. Maybe they can get a lineman in trade for Quinn!!

  43. PatricktheDookie says: Apr 28, 2010 5:43 PM

ESPN is reporting that Clady claims he will be out for three months…

Curious to know if he’s going to receive any compensation this year? I assume the Broncos don’t have to pay him if he hurt himself playing basketball?

  45. Leto_II says: Apr 28, 2010 5:47 PM

This is no big deal. Tebow will touch Clady’s knee and it will be healed instantly.

I’d call the Saints and ask about Jammal Brown. With offensive tackles Bushrod, Stinchcomb, Strief & 2nd-round pick Charles Brown, something’s got to give. He won’t come cheap though.

  48. raidertg says: Apr 28, 2010 5:56 PM

What the hell is a man that size doing playing basketball anyway.

  49. RavenAttack says: Apr 28, 2010 6:06 PM

That’s a huge blow to the Broncos after Clady was coming off of a Pro Bowl season and is the rock of the O-line. It’s a good thing they have Beadles to play the tackle position but I still think they should go after Flozell Adams or Jammal Brown.

  51. MagicMan407 says: Apr 28, 2010 7:50 PM

Sucks! He’s the best offensive tackle in the NFL right now. When the Redskins lost Samuels last year it was a big blow to our team. Hopefully he gets well fast.

  52. jfdane says: Apr 29, 2010 1:42 AM

They should trade for Saints LT Jamal Brown.
