Tony Washington still waits

Before the draft, reports emerged that one of the best prospects in the pool, Tony Washington, had been convicted at age 16 of having sex with his biological sister.  He spent two weeks in jail and, more importantly, is a registered sex offender.

Coincidentally (or not), the Abilene Christian tackle has been regarded as radioactive by the NFL, despite being viewed as a Day Two prospect.

But Washington wasn’t drafted at all.  Since Saturday, he hasn’t even received an offer to sign with a team as an undrafted free agent.

I’m in complete shock,” agent Vann McElroy told Darren Rovell of CNBC.  “I feel so bad for this kid.  This
is something that happened seven years ago and, probably because of the
[Ben] Roethlisberger situation, he hasn’t been called.”

Frankly, we think the situation has a greater connection to the Dez Bryant situation.  It’s widely believed in league circles that Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland asked Bryant if his mother was a prostitute because Bryant inevitably will face similar (and worse) comments on the field and in the locker room.

Multiply that dynamic by 1,000 as to Tony Washington.

Then there’s the reality that teams simply don’t want to employ a guy who had sex with his sister.  “Disgusting” was the word from one team before the draft.  So while football talent ordinarily knows no discrimination, football coaches apparently have yet to embrace the notion of looking the other way when it comes to registered sex offenders.

Whether or not it’s fair doesn’t matter.  Regardless of the specific reason for their aversion, Washington’s past conduct lands in territory into which no NFL team is willing to throw a lifeline.

“We spent hours of our time, providing letters, testimonials from people
to tell this kid’s story,” McElroy told Rovell.  “It isn’t like he’s some
pervert hanging around in the bushes.  He’s a good kid who screwed up,
who since then was accepted by the board and admitted to one of the most
conservative colleges out there. . . .  Someone should give this kid a chance.”

Eventually, someone will.  If a grown man who was a convicted dogfighter and admitted dog killer deserves a second chance, a kid who did something really stupid does, too.

Bullcrap. If boys didn’t have sex with their sisters most of the current NFL rosters wouldn’t exist. Not to mention the coaching staffs and front office personel.

If he had 1st round talent, he would have gone first round.
Basically if the talent is worth it, every team would take that baggage.

What kind of society do we live in? Washington was just a kid when it happened. Kids have an incomplete set of values and lack maturity and understanding, and that has to be kept in perspective when considering what occurred. I’m not trying to minimize or excuse what he did, but it’s important to note that he’s paid his debt to society and (according to the reports) has walked the straight and narrow since then. He deserves support and a second chance.

  15. Bech72 says: Apr 29, 2010 6:33 PM

You fell bad for the guy, but you have to realize that the NFL is a business. Signing him will be a PR nightmare for any team, and not many teams are going to weather that storm for a guy that isn’t a top tier talent. Washington might have the talent to end up being a starter at the all important LT position, but when it comes down to it, the NFL might not be ready for a registered sex offender, although the Steelers do have a hole at LT and some an up and coming sex offender on the roster…..

  16. Titans*Smoke*Pole says: Apr 29, 2010 6:34 PM

What kind of degenerate would label incest with a sibling “screwing up, now get over it”???
There are certain actions that are basically unforgivable, and forcing one’s self upon one’s own sister is one of them.
    Unreal.

  20. The Wishbone says: Apr 29, 2010 6:36 PM

“a kid who did something really stupid”
Clearly you have a different opinion of the term “really stupid” than anyone I’ve ever met. Banging your sister is far past “really stupid”.
Maybe it’s just me. But I doubt it. Maybe you’ll get lots of posts from sister bangers in defense of this fella.
You could at least tell us how old the sister was. 16? 26? 6?

What this kid did was stupid wrong and by most accounts disgusting. The sex was consensual not that it makes it OK but those calling him a rapist need to check the facts before they do that.
In the end he should get a second chance.

  23. Fonetik says: Apr 29, 2010 6:41 PM

    @birdmancometh
He didn’t RAPE his sister. The sex was consensual, and there was only a 1 year age difference, both of them being minors.
Gross, absolutely, but doesn’t fall into “sex offender” territory in my mind.

  24. Shanahan's Rat Teeth says: Apr 29, 2010 6:42 PM

I don’t care how dysfunctional of a home life this guy had, even the most screwed up human being understands that it is inherently wrong to have sex with your younger sister. Obviously, an NFL team really has to question a guy’s decision making ability who chose to have consentual sex with his sister. It was only 7 years ago, so he’s not very far removed from deciding to have sex with his sister. Did I mention it wasn’t like he had anger issues or was hooked on drugs, but that he was boning his younger sister?

Ostracized by a bunch of people who either do this kind of shit themselves or fantasize about it…
2 kids who just wish they had exhibited a little more control.
This is where we make the mistake in society. Kids need to be taught that it is ok to fantasize about whatever you want but xyz is wrong. But we want to shut it in a box – can’t talk about THAT – and kids can get confused.
They want to teach that just plain masterbating or simple casual sex is so wrong and they have ALL these desires running through their heads.

  43. kosarsmyidol says: Apr 29, 2010 7:24 PM

Well, being an undrafted free agent is the rookie equivalent of kissing your sister, I suppose…
Seriously, I have no problem with teams not wanting to give him a chance. Being in the NFL is a privilege, not a right. The league already has some messed up individuals in the league that it can’t control.
He was 16. He may not have fully thought out the consequences but he had to have known that it was wrong (to say the least). It’s unfortunate that he may have limited his future prospects, but when you really f*ck up, that’s to be expected.

  46. jvincenzob says: Apr 29, 2010 7:44 PM

Basically what happened is that they had sex but as he is male and neither of them are of legal age it is statuatory rape. He DIDN’T “force himself on her”. He did it 7 years ago when he was just 16 and who knows what was going on in his head then. Is this any worse than Stallworth’s DUI killing or Marshall’s domestic abuse?
In general I think the law is fairly stupid. If both are under age it’s the man’s fault?

  47. bobinpuertorico says: Apr 29, 2010 7:59 PM

It is just too bad that he didn’t murder someone, rape a stranger or beat women, because even adults who commit these crimes are welcome in the NFL.

  48. brasho says: Apr 29, 2010 8:01 PM

According to ALL reports, he was 16 years old and his sister was 15, they had consensual sex… disgusting as it was, that was 8 years ago and he has had ZERO problems since then. The guy has legit NFL starter-type talent but had to attend Abilene Christian instead of a bigger school.
It is gross, disgusting, sickening, etc… but at least his equally sick sister consented. Without incest we would have had no state of West Virginia, no “Deliverance”, no Peacock Family from the X-Files, and no Royal Family.

I haven’t seen any detailed information on this particular case, that which I have seen suggested that this was not a case of rape. The only thing that has been made clear is that he was brought up in a very unstable family.
Without knowing what that situation was it is almost impossible to make any judgement.
The siblings may have been brought up entirely separately. They may not have met or even been aware that they were brother and sister until shortly before the event.
Incest in those cases is rare but not unheard of because there is often a strong feeling of closeness without the familial bonding that occurs by being brought up with in the same family.
It’s no unheard of for people to end up married to a sibling without any knowledge of a blood tie, with them often reporting that they felt connected to each as soon as they met.
There are two points here. (1) Everyone deserves a second chance. (2) He isn’t going to get that playing football.
Every defensive player he goes up against is going to throw that in his face. He will never be allowed to forget it and move on.
Abilene Christian did the Christian thing, gave him a chance and support. The NFL is going to do the professional thing and realise that his fault or not he is going to be a source of disruption on their team.
He’ll be better off living his life out of the spotlight.

I understand why teams won’t sign him. It’s not a second chance thing, it’s the PR nightmare that some of you folks have already suggested. It would be distracting to the point of being detrimental to the team.
But I’m really disappointed in PFT Planet, more than usual. This comment section has really highlighted one of our society’s greatest problems. I hope some of you consider just how ignorant you really are.

Well I just figured in some of those geographically isolated towns in Canada that some leeway would be given to sister-f&ckers. I mean, its either your sister or a goat in some instances, right? The reason Stallworth and Little get a pass it is because of the grace of god we go. (Many people drive drunk, they got unlucky. Not saying that is right but the reality of the situation).

  66. MillenSucks says: Apr 29, 2010 9:18 PM

Ok let me try and put some perspective on this. I am a committed Christian and accept all tradition Catholic Christian moral teachings. Thus as you can imagine I hold and believe that it is not a matter of opinion whether sex with ones sibling is a grievous immoral act. Also, I understand why the NFL would not want him in. Actually what I believe is that no one wants to be the first to pick him up. I am certain that if he was on a practice squad all 31 other teams would think about signing him. And I am a Detroit fan so you can imagine how much I want more Offensive Line help.
All that said here is the deal. The sex was not forced. We do not know who was the instigator. We do not know what the family circumstances are. I read some where that they did NOT grow up together closely and didn’t really know each other than well when they were together. Both brother and sister are on good terms now and talk regularly. It doesn’t seem fair that it is always the guys fault in matters like this just a de jure aspect of law where coercion is NOT involved. So all that being said it is NOT a cut and dry situation and my final analysis would and could only be made after having some personal contact with the Athlete and many of those who had known him throughout college. I can GUARANTEE there are guys playing that have done things, that while not as taboo, are much worse on a gravity scale. Especially where people end of dead or people end up raped or beaten. So if my Lions did all the personal checking in necessary and gave this kid a chance I would embrace him and hope that he would be a really motivated guy who never took his opportunity for granted. But all of this is based on such limited info that it is hard for any of us to tell.

Most of us are NOT pillars of society at age 16,nor are too versed on the moral values issue.
That is the truth. Most of first sex experiences are odd anyway, some odder than others.
Accordingly to all reports so far it wasn’t a rape just 2 misguided kids that got horny.
To the ones that seem so angry at him.. get over it.. it wasn’t YOUR sister it was his and if you read the reports she got over it too and moved on. This is not like he attacked a child nor a woman that was drunk and said NO several times or a jogger or whatever sexual assault is in my opinion.

  75. Route36West says: Apr 29, 2010 10:57 PM

Everyone saying check the facts. THERE IS NO FACTS. The records were sealed and everything your hearing about consenual and such is because thats what hes told everyone. His sister wont speak on it.
Do research of how incestual relationships happens the one who starts it uses it to dominate the other. If it was consenual how did the police find out? Why were charges pressed against him and not her? Why was he given 5 years probation?
The only way someone found out is because she told someone about it because she obviously didnt like what was happening. Sexual Assault isnt always holding someone down and forcing themself on the other. It can be scaring somone into having sex with them are simpily telling them that they are going to have sex with them against the other persons will. It doesnt have to be violent for it to be against the other persons will.
We dont know if thats what happened in this situation or not because the only persons side we have heard is his. The sister wont talk about it and the police wont release the report because of his age at the time.
Im not willing to give this guy a pass on his word alone. And Im happy the NFL isnt either.

I am ashamed I’m from the same country as some of you…. this ill branding of people for no good reason has its roots in communism…. I believe that the last greatest leader in history that used to brand certain people and separate them into different tiers (kind of like the sex offender registry) was Hitler. Not only shouldn’t he be a sex offender because he didnt hurt anybody… its because it is a downright violation of our constitution… Many years ago our nation signed an act against cruel and unusual punishment.. but this… branding this kid for life? this is as cruel as it gets…. I’m all for registering VIOLENT and DANGEROUS offenders because they honestly are just sick people and that was the original INTENT of Meagan’s Law…. So stop using the word American when you speak when your beliefs are the furthest thing from it. He deserves a second chance….. nobody is perfect…. we’re pulling for u Tony.

i’m willing to wager his sister isn’t struggling to get a job that she might want because she had sex with her brother. her prospective employees probably have no idea. i feel the double standard here is at least as troubling as what they did.

The crime against nature happened in Texas.
Surely there are are some things that need to be defined under Texas law such as:
    -age of consent
-statutory rape of a 15 year old
    -child molestation
There is a lot that is not known regarding the incest/child molestation/statutory rape, the lack of morals in the household, and how Texas child protective services handled the intervention and lack of education in the home.
This is clearly a demented and damaged person that you just can’t send out to meet the public and have signing autographs with children under 18.
The simple logistics of keeping a registered sex offender/child molestor/statutory rapist away from the public as well as each individual states different legal definitions is a lot of work for any team’s legal department to attempt a narrow path of criminal and employment law if one even exists.
Then there is bad publicity from having a registered sex offender at your facilities and at public events.
    It is not worth it.

You could never look at the guy and seriously say you trust him or think he is a good guy. I don’t care if he was the greatest football player in the world, HE STILL HAD SEX WITH HIS SISTER! At least Joe Dirt only faked it.

  86. piemaster says: Apr 30, 2010 1:54 AM

LOL nearly everyone is missing the point. This isn’t about whether he ‘deserves’ a second chance, how severe a crime incest is or anything like that. The fact is that no NFL team is prepared to invest money and a roster spot in a kid with mediocre talent with this kind of baggage.
If he had the talent of, say, Brian Bulaga, then yes, no doubt somebody would have drafted him and probably quite highly. But once you get into the bottom rounds of the draft, there is less of an obvious difference in the talent level of players. If you had the choice between drafting ‘average player who has slept with his sister’ and ‘average player who hasn’t slept with his sister’, which are you going to choose? It’s not rocket science.

“At least one NFL scout told SportsFanLive.com that he remains skeptical about Washington.
“I worry about this kid. Whether it’s that again or something else, he has a history of serious problems,” the scout said. “What disturbs me is that I don’t know if he sees anything wrong with it. He said where he comes from, this kind of thing happens all the time. I don’t think he’s at all ready for the rejection he’s about to face once people find out.””

    ——————————————–
Wow, What a way to show just how ignorant and stupid you really are. This kind of stuff isn’t a “southern thing” as most of you morons would believe, so get over yourselves. Yes it did used to happen in Appalachia country, hence the reputation of West Virginia. The thing is, for you Yankee morons who have no education, yet claim to be so superior to everyone else, Appalachia extends from Alabama all of the way to southern New York. Incest was more common in northern Appalachia, so you might want to back down with this southern stereotype B.S. before you end up with your foot in your mouths.
If anything, it is the elitist attitude of the North East that is an embarrassment to this country. The most ignorant and racist people I have ever met, was while visiting the North East every summer over the years. The elitist attitude is pathetic, as you Yanks are no better than anyone else. It’s funny though, because once you get up towards New Hampshire and Maine, the people become decent and nice again. It’s like the little armpit from eastern New York up through Massachusetts is just full of people who are full of themselves.

The sad thing about this is that people would be more likely to give him a second chance if he had beaten his sister to a bloody pulp or had committed manslaughter.
The records are sealed. Whether or not it was consensual is debatable. Alledgedly he and his sister didn’t talk for some time afterwards. That may mean she didn’t share his view that it was consensual or that she was angry at the massive embarassment and distress it must have caused her when it got dragged through court.
Nobody knows what happened. The only certainty is that he will have the piss taken out of him for the rest of his life.

I mean that is a pretty offensive question and would not be asked to someone applying for another job, but in this context seems fair.
So while these questions are not polite, I think this Bryant situation has been blown way out of proportion.
    And Silver is a douche.

    Hey Mike,
By comparing Tony Washington’s issues with Mike Vick’s issues, you seem to suggest cruelty to animals is worse than cruelty to people.
Cruelty to animals is certainly a bad thing. However, what Ray Lewis did was far worse.
Cruelty to animals is not as bad as cruelty to people and our laws support that.
Mike Vick has spent nearly two years in the federal system. Frankly, your articles on this blog could have influenced the severity of Vicks sentence.
Vick has served his time. Don’t you think it is time to give the guy a break?

  103. ToledoLions says: Apr 30, 2010 3:46 PM

    @ birdmancometh,
He didn’t rape his sister. Actually it was consensual sex. It’s just the fact that it was his sister that makes it taboo and illegal in Louisiana. He was convicted of having consensual sex with his sister. But in no way is that rape, it’s just creepy as hell.
I do feel bad for him though because it happened when he was a kid. I’m sure he knew it was wrong but at that age you don’t fully understand the consequences of your actions. If a serial rapist like Ben or a person who killed a teenager like Leonard Little can play in this league. Why can’t he get a shot because of something that happened when he was 16?

  104. rdebs812 says: Apr 30, 2010 4:31 PM

ohh and lets not forget Donte Stallworth…. he murdered someone and spent 24 days in jail… and a couple of years probation as he continues to make millions in the NFL…… BUTTTTT a 16 year old kid who had CONSENSUAL SEX with his sister is worse than him? Really think before you answer this one…. seriously….

  105. skf727 says: Apr 30, 2010 4:40 PM

I can’t believe some of you morons are playing the “sex was consensual” card.
I think Mark “Hard Hittin” Whiten used that card after he was accused of raping some broad who was not his wife back in 1997. Why wasn’t he with his wife? She had given birth to their second child two days prior!
My point is sometimes the simple fact that the intercourse even took place is enough to convict someone in the courtroom of public opinion and rightly so.
And I am sorry. It doesn’t matter if Washington’s sister was a prostitute and it was her “job” to have sex with men. That doesn’t trump the pesky fact that SHE IS HIS SISTER!!
And Florio, I will refrain from making an obligatory West VA swipe though when you write something like…
“If a grown man who was a convicted dogfighter and admitted dog killer deserves a second chance, a kid who did something really stupid does, too.”
    it absolutely begs for one!!
    Doing something stupid is
    a. wearing a belt with suspenders
    b. putting an empty ice cube tray back in the freezer
    c. asking for a price check at a dollar store
Note that gaining carnal knowledge of one’s sister was not one of those choices because let’s be frank.
Unless Tony Washington was the mother of all late bloomers- dude is 6’6″, 311 pounds. I’m sure he was smaller seven years ago, but, how much smaller, a mere 6’2″ 250!?!? How many 15yr old girls are going to be able to fight that off?!?!
    Of course it was consensual.

  106. rdebs812 says: Apr 30, 2010 6:38 PM

How you can consistently use the word rape when describing this kid is absolutely wrong… him AND his sister chose to have sex… is it right? definitely not… but why is he the only one who is paying? and does this make him a threat to little children? cmon man use some common sense u little John Walsh drone….

  107. skf727 says: Apr 30, 2010 9:58 PM

    rdebs812,
When did I ever use the word “rape” except when referencing the Whiten case? When did I ever say he was a threat to little children? And is he the only one paying?
Suffice it to say that if his sister was applying for a hyper-competitive job that pays $500K or whatever the league minimum is- I’m thinking that this little kernel of info would disqualify her from consideration for the position.
The whole point of my post was that it doesn’t matter if it was “consensual” or not-
HE HAD SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH HIS SISTER!!!
What more do you need to know about the guy?
I do have my doubts that due to his physical size that his sister would have been able to stop him if he intended to rape her. So as far as that goes, in a weird way, I give her credit for not claiming that he raped her if it was, in fact, consensual. She could have saved herself and tossed him firmly under the bus.
That being said. Why would I care that his sister doesn’t harbor any ill will towards him? She obviously has issues, too!! Doubtful I would pen her to a multi-million dollar contract either.
16 is not 9. Yes, in the eyes of the law he is a minor but c’mon. Society considers 16 yr olds mature enough to drive a car and hold a job. Unless this dude is severely learning disabled and no one has ever mentioned that- there is no excuse for doing something like that. This is something that he did stone sober and drug free by all accounts.
Would it have been out of bounds if it was his mother? his father? his brother?
This moral relativism is shocking. I really weep for the future. I am flat out embarrassed for this country that these posts are running 50/50. Sometimes black is black and white is white.
And I have rarely seen something as easily black and white as this story. Playing in the NFL is a friggin privilege that very few people attain and for each one that makes it there are easily 20 who are talented enough but don’t.
Why don’t YOU use some common sense.
If you are the one signing the checks why would you even bother with this one when there are at least 20 guys as good without the history of at least one moment of colossally sick judgment!?!
This is the same league that wouldn’t let the most popular radio talk show host in the country buy a small piece of a struggling franchise because it was worried some people might be offended.
Yet, you think no one would blink an eye at the NFL employing someone who was convicted of having sexual intercourse with his sister…consensual or not.
    Get a clue, moron.

Did they even grow up together and was she a just a step of half sister? Many unanswered questions. All that said he was just a kid, as she was, and sounds like he has stepped up and tried to make amends and move forward to be a productive person. geez give this kid a break, many other athletes have been given a second chance…………..And besides, we could use a good offensive lineman :>)
