Dez Bryant calls Dolphins' leak "a lie"

On the same day that Jim Trotter of SI.com reported — and a large chunk of the football-following world accepted without scrutiny — that Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland asked receiver Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute after he volunteered that his father is a pimp and that his mother works for him, Bryant called the “context” information provided on an off-the-record basis by the Dolphins “a lie.”

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that Bryant was resolute in two separate discussions regarding the story that the Dolphins have been pushing privately and without anyone from the organization going on the record.  The franchise’s official position, as we pointed out earlier today, is that it doesn’t know where the leaked report came from.  (We’ve got a feeling no one on the business side of the operation has the nerve to ask V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells whether he knows anything about the situation.)

Meanwhile, Bryant separately told Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports that the unnamed Dolphins sources are “lying,” and that Bryant did not say his father is a pimp.

Again, we realize that Bryant has lied in the past.  But football coaches and executives lie all the time.  More importantly, in this case Bryant is providing his position directly.  The Dolphins aren’t.  Unless and until Ireland, Parcells, or someone else repeats the team’s unofficial version of the events via a written statement or a press conference, we’re going to believe the guy who has opted not to hide behind anonymity.

Bottom line?  Several years after a Cowboys receiver named Bryant reportedly threw a jersey in Parcells’ face, another Cowboys receiver named Bryant is cramming his foot up the rear end of the Tuna’s current organization.  Why do we have a feeling that Jerry Jones is secretly loving every minute of it?

Enough…. I swear this website runs with 2 or three stories at a time and takes all of the interest out of it. Look, there are 32 teams in the NFL and all of them have to be doing something with personnel right now, how about we focus on something else?

Why is uncovering the truth about this story so importanat. Dez Bryant has zero credability in my eyes. Wasn’t he suspended from NCAA football for LYING. Yeah, I believe him though. I really hope we can keep up with 10 or so threads a day on this story for about 3 months.

Dez has asked the media to move on. He got an apology from Ireland that wouldn’t have been offered if he didn’t think he’d been out of line. The Dolfins are leaking obvious “spin control” while trying to maintain plausible deniability about the substance of the leaks and what is now being offered as an explanation of the way the conversation supposedly went. Ireland abused his right to dig into the background of a prospective draft pick and it bit him in the a**. Now they’re trying to make Dez out to be the bad guy. Puh leeeeez! All of this extra coverage is doing Dez Bryant more harm than good. He has tried to take the higher ground in all of this but it’s being stroked for all it’s worth for the media’s sake. I hope Dez learns to be cautious in who he trusts with info from now on.

    So lets get this straight.
Until the Dolphins provide you video and transcript proof, and thereby make every person whose ever done a confidential interview with them – nervous as Dez Bryants mother in church… your going to continue to believe a known liar, and trash the Dolphins organization.
    Got it.

Hey look, Mike Florio’s 100th post today about a tired subject.
You’re opinion is so unbelievably slanted that the only conclusion I can come to is that you DESPISE the Tuna and his regime. I mean look at your comments comparing the two Bryants.
You’re a real piece of work Florio. Taking sides in a he said, he said with various unnamed sources…. LOL ….Can’t wait to see the next slanted entry on this.

Funny how Florio bashes ESPN for taking the side of a former ESPN employee but somehow manages to overlook that he’s doing the same thing for a fellow NBC employee. What a complete hypocrite. Not that it’s a surprise. (Why do I get the feeling NBC is loving causing discomfort to ESPN via Florio?)

  30. robert ethan says: Apr 30, 2010 5:31 PM

The context of the conversation is being reported by some pretty reliable journalists.
Obviously no one wants to pile on Dez Bryant. The league will go out of it’s way to protect him. Especially if they perceive that he is being manipulated by individuals around him.
I’d say the one being pimped here is Bryant, and the whores on their high horses are Silver! and Lifestyle Coach.

  31. sundays and beer mmmm says: Apr 30, 2010 5:31 PM

I watched the Interview with Ed Werder. Dez did not want to talk about it. Werder kept going and going with the questions. This story is now irrelevant because the only interested parties are the media. Here is the link to the interview. See for yourself.

  32. joneildu says: Apr 30, 2010 5:32 PM

Dez Bryant isn’t saying anything, but you’re backing him. He said publicly “It’s a lit, but I don’t want to speak on it”. He said nothing about the context. Florio, really, who do you have it out for in the Miami organization? Ben didn’t have this many stories after [allegedly] raping an underage girl.

Who friggin cares. Apparently she’s not a prostitute. She did all those guys for free.

  34. joneildu says: Apr 30, 2010 5:39 PM

Also, since Dez deemed it appropriate to release this to the media, why does he now not “want to speak on it” and provide the context. If he was the one to take the story to the media, shouldn’t the onus be on him to provide the context?

  35. Rock Sexton says: Apr 30, 2010 5:42 PM

Since Florio is an “unnamed source” addict, I’ll post one of my own straight from a new CNNSI article…
“But I have to tell you that the story going hard around the Combine — and everybody heard it whether it was true or not — was that his mother was a prostitute and his father was her pimp. That doesn’t make it right, but that stuff was out there.”

  36. StevieMo says: Apr 30, 2010 5:44 PM

All the usual readers on here insist on saying that this is not a story (because these idiots have no lives and have nothing else to do other than to tell the guy who created one of the most successful sports blogs in history what he should and should not post). Loserville….
Anyway, it is a VERY big story that a GM and his team is trying through lies and underhanded means (a “leak” via a “friendly” reporter) to clean up a mess the GM created at the expense of a guy who was subject to answering idiotic questions in an official interview.
The fact that they are making up shyte in order to try to make themselves look better is an affront to the NFL and its brand. All they have to do to look more credible is go up to the podium, tell this story directly to the media and we’ll sort it out ourselves (I think Miami is lying their asses off). The fact that it was leaked and not addressed directly to the media points to the Dolphins lying about it. So does the fact Ireland apologized to Bryant.
It’s a very big story, so STFU, you candy-ass PFT critics. Go back to your mom’s basement.

  37. bertochini says: Apr 30, 2010 5:53 PM

poor Bryant :( he is now realizing that this is never going to end. he is even saying he is trying to put this behind him, but with Florio around he will keep hearing that his mother is a prostitute for ever. but hey! at least Silver was on the news for a week.

  38. fisherman says: Apr 30, 2010 5:59 PM

One thing is certain. Dez Bryant has a case against Jeff Ireland if he wants to sue. There’s no doubt about that. He could sue for assault and battery.
Because it’s pretty clear to me that Ireland bruised Bryant’s delicate vagina.

  42. randyextry says: Apr 30, 2010 6:03 PM

If you could somehow tie this story into the Starcaps saga you will have achieved nirvana…and by that I mean nothingness. Give it a rest. “He said that she said that what they said contradicted what I said.” You’re just reporting on the reporting at this point – and nobody cares except you and Dez Bryant. The Tuna certainly doesn’t.

  43. funi says: Apr 30, 2010 6:04 PM

Dez is a prover LIAR! He should got o Ga and hook up with DTF, they woudl make a good pair. Where is Dez’s mother at anyhow? Why dont ESPN go to her door ans ask her that or get TMZ to follow her! That will prove if she’s a ho!

  44. robert ethan says: Apr 30, 2010 6:04 PM

There seems to be confusion as to who was in the room at the time. ESPN hostess said that it was just Bryant and Ireland. Silver! says that Wells was there with Bryant and confirmed to him that the question was asked. It seems unlikely to me that the two of them would be on their own at the interview. Bryant is known for his entourage and most NFL teams interview with a team of coachs. So there have to be a few people out there who know exactly how it went down, and most probably tape that confirms the exact convo.

The Miami Dolphins — and Bill Parcells in particular — are revealing themselves to be very bad people in this mess.
Seems to me that the ugly and unacceptable question Ireland asked of Bryant has become the can opener that is prying open and revealing an ugly culture at that club.
The fact that the organization chose to follow one disgraceful act with another says a lot about the people who are running that franchise, and none of it is good.
Thank you for following-up on this, Florio.

  49. Santonio'sBluntWrap says: Apr 30, 2010 6:20 PM

First off, I can’t believe the Fins even responded to this BS. Second, I can’t believe what I huge story everyone (ie FloHomo and his crew) are making out of this. When this broke, it seemed as if Bryant didn’t give a hoot about the question, but leave it to the media to make something out of nothing in the interest of hits on a blog, or sales out of the ad department, or a personal vendetta…whatever fits.
If someone asked me in a job interview if my mom was a prostitute, I would be very offended. I might even slug the bastard, if my day was already going bad enough before the question. The difference between myself and this rookie is that the company I am interviewing for is most likely not about to dump millions in my lap, so that kind of makes that question off limits. This kid doesn’t have that luxury. Whatever team took him was going to end up gambling millions on him, and that gives them the right to ask whatever the hell they feel like.
“Are you a homosexual who is later going to be featured in photos of gay naked beach parties with men?” – Fair
“Do you do drugs?” – Marcellus Wiley – Fair
“Are you a strip club addict who thinks ‘Making it rain’ is just the sh!t?” – Fair
“Is your dad a dope dealer?” – Fair
“Are you a couple of shots away from a bathroom rape allegation?” – Totally fair.
I will say that I am most disappointed in my team for not being more forthcoming with this. If they asked the question (which I fully believe they did…and it was probably out of the blue), then they should have come right out and said, “You’re damn right we asked it. We’re not about to give anyone as much money as these rookies get without knowing EVERYTHING, so suck it.” That would have squashed this whole thing, and probably gained a ton of respect from the fan base. Instead, they chose what looked like the PR friendly way out, and it ended up blowing up in their faces. Honesty, folks, it’s amazing what it can do.

I’m filing a formal complaint with the ombudsmen for both NBC & Sporting News. At this point, it’s clear that either Florio has a personal vendetta against Parcells &/or Ireland, or that someone at NBC does. Either way, this blog is clearly being used to trump up ridiculous speculation about a story that is way overblown. When this used to be a pissant blog that repeated nothing but lies & rumors, it was just some nobody getting his jollies. It’s now being done under the official auspices of both NBC & Sporting News, so there should at least be an attempt at journalistic ethics (which, true, is an oxymoron but let’s pretend there still are some organizations that try to practice at least a modicum of ethics). Considering the other stories that are out there–& being ignored by this blog–it’s clear that this story is being hyped for some personal reason.

Wait a minute. If I’m with the Dolphin organization, or any other organization, and I’m interviewing a guy whom I’m considering paying tens of millions of dollars, and I ask the guy, ‘ what does your father do’; he answers, ‘ my father’s a pimp’; I then move on and ask him what his mother does, and the guy tells me his mother works for his father the pimp, I’m going to at least put two and two together and figure that if the mother works for the father, who is a pimp, there’s a decent chance the mother might very well be a hooker. I’m going to ask the question because before I pay out those tens of millions of dollars I want to know what kind of a guy I’m hiring and from what kind of environment he comes.
