Dolphins on leaked version of Dez Bryant question: "Don't know where it came from"

At times over the past hour, I’ve felt like I’m trapped in a bad episode of The Twilight Zone

Four days ago, Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports asked the Dolphins for comment as to the contention that G.M. Jeff Ireland had asked receiver Dez Bryant whether his mother is a prostitute.  Three days ago, without the benefit of any response from the Dolphins or an opportunity to interview Ireland to obtain his side of the story (including the all-important “context” of the question), Silver reported that, indeed, Ireland asked the question.

Ireland quickly apologized, with speed that now makes more sense given that the team knew the report was coming.  At no point until today did the Dolphins attempt to provide their version of the events.

Even now, the Dolphins officially are saying nothing.  Reached for comment as to the report that Ireland asked about Bryant’s mother only after Bryant said that his father is a pimp and his mother works for him, team spokesman Harvey Greene said via e-mail, “Don’t know where it came from — we haven’t talked about this since Steve Ross’ statement.”

Of course, Greene didn’t admit that the leaked version of the events is true.  But he didn’t deny it, either.

And because the team has opted to push its side of the story via multiple media leaks and not by manning up and telling the story in an on-the-record setting, we’re not inclined to accept it at face value.

The problem, of course, is that Bryant has a documented history of lying.  Still, he has provided his version of the events in his own words, straight from his own mouth.  The Dolphins are, apparently, hiding behind off-the-record remarks, and they’re benefiting from writers and reporters who are too happy to get the scoop to question whether they’re being fed something that rhymes with the word.

Am I upset about this?  Yes.  Because the approach assumes that we’re all too stupid to do anything other than accept the team’s leaked version of the events as the absolute truth.

Frankly, I’d be less offended if they’d simply call up and ask if my mother was a prostitute.

Florio, is your, was your, a person who had intercourse for money?
If so, let me know, I may have a job for her…

    Mike,
Look at what Bryant actually SAID in the original interview with Yahoo! Silver! He was making a general blanket complaint about the reputation he’d acquired as a potential problem child. He just tossed in the prostitute bit offhandedly to emphasize his victimization.
It was Fat Corrupt David Wells who pushed this along with Yahoo! Silver!. Those two were using each other to promote their private agendas and could care less about Dez Bryant or his mother.

Also just to be clear. Dez Bryant’s mother tossed my salad for $15.

  11. KingJoe! says: Apr 30, 2010 12:32 PM

The Dolphins are allowing this to die on its own. I dont recall a bigger deal being made out of less, post-draft boredom I suppose. After Dallas commits a ton of cash to Dez, than maybe Parcells will showcase the truth. He would love to see Jerry burn himself again with WR. First TO, then a 1st and 3rd for Roy WIlliams and now another first on Dez. Nice job Jerry.

There, did that pep you up some???? :)

YESSS!!!!! Good old context!!!! Hey Florio: and the truth shall set you free!!!!!!……..and yes, you are too stupid for believing a liar without listening the other side of the story.

I see now. This isn’t even about Bryant himself being upset over the question. He’s probably over it by now and doesn’t even care any more, especially since the guy apologized. This is about you and the media not liking how the Dolphins are filtering information to you. Keep posting more stories about it because it isn’t obvious enough already.

  15. Rasta says: Apr 30, 2010 12:35 PM

I would have told Ireland ” now that I’m going to be rich you can’t afford my mama, so why ask the question.”

While you’re searching for the second shooter behind the grassy knoll, did you ever think that perhaps they don’t owe YOU or I or anyone else other than BRYANT anything? You’re actually criticizing them for apologizing and not qualifying the apology.
The horse is dead Florio, put the stick away and start up Favre watch 2010.

My theory is that incompetent salary cap person who f***ed up the Porter release must have pictures of Parcells and Ireland’s mothers…………..cuz you know, they’re both prostitutes.
    Ross must be proud……

  29. texasPHINSfan says: Apr 30, 2010 12:57 PM

give me a break. who cares.
ALL this because an NFL executive asked a player during an interview if his mom was a prostitute.
    really? i mean, really?
    WHO CARES.
Ben raped multiple women, is that not worse? i almost miss daily roethlisberger stories. rape is alright though – god forbid ben ask the women if their mother was a prostitute. give me an effin break.
what ever happened to “sticks and stones?” Dez must be the biggest p*ssy on the planet – and an idiot too. if he’s so embarassed, why the hell did he spill this to the world?

  30. Big Stretch says: Apr 30, 2010 12:57 PM

Get back to posting rumors… for instance Did the Packers contact Pacman recently about coming to Green Bay.

  31. texasPHINSfan says: Apr 30, 2010 1:06 PM

    Florio,
if what the phins say happened is true (with regards to context & line of questioning), maybe you might consider they have not officially released any statements because they don’t have to – they didn’t do anything wrong. Maybe Ireland apologized to Dez just for public reaction – that – let’s face it – would be much worse had Ireland not bothered.
sometimes you have to apologize when you didn’t do anything wrong to help smooth things over – PR. Maybe ireland was just being the bigger man.
It would be great to see PFT take a more objective view sometimes – i think you’ve been drinking too much of Silver’s kool aid without giving the other side the benefit of the doubt.
ultimately you’re casting aside a 50+ year-old franchise and taking the word, complete, from a 21 year-old who was suspended for lying. think about it.

“Am I upset about this? Yes. Because the approach assumes that we’re all too stupid to do anything other than accept the team’s leaked version of the events as the absolute truth. ”
    1. This story is reported under a banner of “PFT Latest News & RUMORS” so why feign offense about whether the story is true?
    2. On another note, I saw ANOTHER talking head last night on TV say they would have put Ireland through the wall had he asked that question of them.
Oh really? Had Dez done that, it would have added to his “questionable character” rep and “confirmed” a sterotype that these same people would have killed him over. They are hypocrites.

  33. Jack Acid says: Apr 30, 2010 1:10 PM

Mike, can you please start a whole new website that covers just this topic (Dez vs. Miami?)
I want to read about it, daily, for the rest of my life.

    All of them?
J/K. Actually I have never really seen an episode so I should not comment on that.

  35. The Wishbone says: Apr 30, 2010 1:12 PM

How are you still upset? If Dez Bryant was considered trustworthy, he woudn’t have fallen so far in the draft. The Dolphins can ask anything they want. He shoulda kept his mouth shut instead of blabbing about it.
We still haven’t gotten an answer. Is she or is she not?!

  36. BRUTUS9448 says: Apr 30, 2010 1:16 PM

All I know is that bryant hasn’t started a single game in the NFL and has burnt many bridges. He will not get hired if/when he’s cut from the cowboys.
I’m sure a lot kids get asked a lot different questions that are probably even worst than this. But he opened his mouth and squeeled. And to boot he’s crossing lines with Bill Parcells. the person that has a lot more leverage in NFL than bryant.
his mom probably needs to go back to her old profession to pay the bills soon enough

  37. bill s says: Apr 30, 2010 1:18 PM

Stick to being a lawyer, you are not good at this football reporting, the story is over, report the news, don’t make the news. Bill

“Am I upset about this? Yes. Because the approach assumes that we’re all too stupid to do anything other than accept the team’s leaked version of the events as the absolute truth. ”
Well isnt everyone just taking what bryant said as the truth? Do you know for a fact that the call was made to tell bryant he was sorry. All I have heard is that the call was made and no proff of anything other than that.
Most importantly wouldnt it be irresponsable for the Dolphins to talk publicly about this situation? I mean that is really between them and bryant. To be honest bryant is stupid for ever saying this was asked in the first place. Sounds like he wants attention!

You’re upset that the Dolphins are hiding behind off-the-record remarks? You, Florio? You?
At times, it’s felt as if entire months of this website have been kept afloat by off-the-record remarks left largely unsubstantiated, made by sources who were not named. I don’t care if you write about Dez Bryant every day, but you do the self-righteous act so terribly. But at least you didn’t quote scripture.

  40. smilergrogan says: May 1, 2010 6:35 AM

florio is right. if it happened the way this story says, ireland would have been out the next day with a transcript, and then an apology based on a less-than-great choice of words rather than a ridiculous insult. it took the dolphins three days to think this up and get it out…
if parcells had the stones to call glenn “she” in public, they would be out in person with this report if it were true….
