And so on the same day that the mother of Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant told Thomas George of FanHouse.com that she believes Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland should apologize directly to her for the much-debated world’s-oldest-profession question, ESPN reports that Angela Bryant was arrested in April 2009 for selling crack cocaine to police informants. In August 2009, she was found guilty of two felony counts relating to possession of a controlled substance and the manufacture and delivery of
a controlled substance. She received a sentence of 10 years’ probation, an apparent slap on the wrist in response to such serious charges.
In 1997, Angela Bryant was convicted of selling crack cocaine, and she spent 18 months in jail.
So regardless of whether she sells sex for money, she has twice been convicted of selling crack for money. (To paraphrase the mother from Meet the Parents, “Is that better than a prostitute?”) That said, none of it matters to her son’s ability to play football. His story can be an inspiration to many children who endure difficult upbringings, and we hope that Bryant becomes the kind of role model that so many kids who can relate to his situation need.

When he played against ranked teams like Missouri, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, he was getting 47 yards of production, 74, 86, 91 – average numbers when considered that he played in a high-octane offense. Certainly not comparable to the best WR drafted in the past 10 years – Michael Crabtree.

What Jeff Ireland asked was behind closed doors, in confidence. He asked the question to his face, up front, without the expression of any judgment. That’s what’s getting lost here. If somebody asks me for information and that offended me, I would feel weak.
When you succumb to your emotions without thinking about the consequences, that is a sign of weakness. Dez was offended by the question, and regardless of if somebody feels it’s okay to be weak in the face of such a question, he didn’t think his actions through. He had a problem, and he couldn’t deal with it internally so he let it out in the open.
Now his mother is the subject of media scrutiny, and when he’s in a big game and his opponent needs a 1st down from a roughing penalty Dez provided that team with ammunition himself.
I understand a lot of people might disagree with my perspective, and think I’m being harsh, but please consider these metaphors:
The best prize fighters are those who shake off punches the best, without responding emotionally. The best comedians are those who shake off hecklers and stick to their routine. The best cornerbacks are the ones who can focus on the game the play after getting beat badly, without letting it affect them emotionally.
This media situation is Dez Bryant’s fault. He didn’t just let it happen, it happened because of words he spoke.

Wells is tight with Senator Royce West, who is up to his eyeballs in the Dallas cocaine trade himself, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Jerry Jones has a part as well. Jones said “he knew how to handle Wells and Parker”, the notorious duo who attached themselves to Michael Crabtree last year.

Dez Bryant’s football skills are unquestioned. The fact that his dedication, character, and work ethic are now in question is a direct result of the upbringing he had. Having a proper upbringing is under-rated. If one has a tough upbringing, then succeeds, isn’t it glorified beyond belief?

I said this on another post of this story. The NFL,NBA, MLB, pay big money for these young men coming straight out of college and signing multi million dollar contracts. When a story breaks that those young men have been involved or suspected of a crime, all people can do is comment on how the NFL, NBA and others should do more to clean up the sport. However when a question is ask that sheds light on the background of one of these players with a questionable past, then comes those forth who think its none of their business. These organizations are like any other employer, they should be allowed to know who their dealing with before they pay out the value of the contract for someone who can’t keep themselves out of trouble. You can’t have it both ways!! Either let them probe a players background or shut up about what kind of role models they are supposed to be when the gavel falls and they end up the embarrassment of everyone who knows them.
