JaMarcus has limited snaps to close minicamp

Yeah, the reports about JaMarcus Russell weighing 300 pounds were overblown and he participated at minicamp over the weekend.

But Russell’s role has clearly changed and it’s fair to wonder what Oakland’s plan for Russell is, assuming there is one. Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune writes that Russell’s snaps were limited in the final two practices of minicamp.

Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote Russell “seemed to regress each day” after a solid first practice.

It’s no surprise Russell is beginning to take a back seat.  Why take snaps away from Jason Campbell for the sake of a phony competition?

While there were some small signs of progress, McDonald noted Russell hardly looked like a quarterback worth $9.45 million this year.

Perhaps Al Davis wants Russell around as insurance in case Campbell struggles or gets hurt, but the risk is not worth the reward.  Bruce Gradkowski, Kyle Boller, and Charlie Frye work just fine as insurance policies.

JaMarcus is going to be a huge bargain for someone if the Raiders cut him. The guy is 24 freakin years old. Tom Brady was 24 before he made his first NFL start. I think Brady’s NFL stats when he turned 24 were 3 PASSES ATTEMPTED, 1 COMPLETION.

Using Russell as an insurance plan would be like having using Heyward-Bey as a #1 WR,,,, oh yeah never mind this is still Al Davis’ Raiders.

I’m sorry, as much as I hate to say it. Al is not going to give up on this kid. That’s the reason Hue Jackson was hired. He has what….3 more years on his contract? We already paid him most of his guaranteed money. Hopefully at this point we can get him to restructure his contract. I think that’s the only hope we got of saving some money on this.

There you go again, overblowing things, like his weight. Took limited snaps on the last day of minicamp? Gosh! Couldn’t be cause of other things than him playing poor. At the first day of minicamp, Russell did in fact seem better than any of the other QBs.

3/4 of the posts are pretty uncreative fat jokes. Yeah the dude is out of shape for a qb, but every time this guy is mentioned it is the same old tired jokes.
As for the post saying someone is going to get a bargain…that could be true. I, personally, do not see this guy doing what it takes to be an NFL QB. But given the right coaches and team (motivators), he may be ok. It may be true some team can get a bargain out of the guy, but the Raiders still should dump him based on what he is owed.

” Bruce Gradkowski, Kyle Boller, and Charlie Frye work just fine as insurance policies.”
    Really?
Russell will not be out of work long if the Raiders cut him. If Kyle Boller and David Carr can keep getting jobs holding a clipboard he should be able to.
You really should see what he can do with some decent coaching and real comp for pt. He is only 24, and he does have one of the strongest arms ever. He seems a little more like Vinny Testaverde than Peyton Manning, but he has just as much of a chance to become a good starting QB as any of the draft picks or Jason Campbell for that matter. That is not exactly a lopsided competition, Russell could win the job if he gets in shape and stays motivated.
He was brutal out there at times, but lat year vs the Ravens, Russel made some throws that you can not teach. He has a Dan Marino, John Elway type of cannon and a pretty quick release, tight spiral and accuracy. He has a long way to go in reading coverages and blitzes and anticipation of where to go with the ball, but no QB in the NFL right now has more raw talent. What is another 9 Mil for Al Davis? He did stink, but plenty of guys have and then played well, or would have stunk had they played, but they sat on the bench until they were 24 or 25.

  30. Not a member? says: May 3, 2010 11:55 AM

The only reason he hasn’t been cut yet is that the media started announcing that he would be cut. Al Davis doesn’t want the media to be right. So, he won’t cut JaMarcus until it’s his idea.

  31. Bobby Bushay says: May 3, 2010 11:55 AM

The keys of the Raider QB kingdom were given to Russell. He did little to earn them except being drafted #1. Perhaps a little competition will get him going.
I have heard reports that the extra 6+ million is guaranteed once he makes the 2010 roster, so in watching Al Davis history for over 30 years, I believe it’s easy to see that Al will wait and ponder the correct move by the final roster cutdown day. He will allow JaMarcus to develop this summer thru this “competition” phase while at the same time allow Russell to twist with uncertainty of his fate until the final roster cuts with all of this media speculation. This is Al Davis 101, folks, in handling underperforming players. If JaMarcus works well enough, they’ll let him sit behind Campell and Gradkowski and press for a restructured deal. If he continues to regress, they will hold onto him until the final roster cut, and then cut him loose or trade him in a Campbell style trade. OR, he could always give him the Marcus Allen treatment. The worst thing that could happen is that Russell succeed elsewhere. If Al waits until the final roster cuts, chances are Russell would be no more than a clipboard holder for his new team.

  32. MrONE50 says: May 3, 2010 11:58 AM

Get the story straight, JellyMarcus was giving his food time to digest, so he let the other QBs were givng more snaps.

He stays is he accepts the vet minimum. He is gone if he wants 10 million a year.
But you see, Russell isnt Brady. Yes Russell has a big arm but:
1 – he can’t read defenses fast enough (aka low football IQ)
2 – he has no touch on his passes
3 – he has no leadership ability
4 – he has a poor work ethic
Can he turn his career around? Yes, he might.
He doesn’t have ANY of the intangibles you want in a QB at this point though.

I’ll tell you guys again….. There is no loss in keeping him. $6 mill, $9 mill, whatever. There is no salary cap! Al Davis has won so much money vs the NFL $9 mill is a drop in the bucket. Russell is a piece of Sh*t, so what. Move on. Campbell is here to be the starter and thats it. If russell decides to turn it around while watching Campbell light it up than great. Then he can lean and move on to continue his career elsewhere.
    AGAIN… THE MONEY MEANS NOTHING!
