Minnesota Governor doesn’t like stadium proposal that includes new taxes

On Monday, Minnesota legislators introduced multiple proposals for a new Vikings stadium. One is touted as imposing costs only on those who would benefit from the new venue.

But the costs imposed are taxes -- and Governor Tim Pawlenty isn’t inclined to support any proposal that entails new taxes.

“We remain opposed to any stadium plan that includes tax increases, including the hotel tax, jersey tax, and rental car tax in one of the plans unveiled today,” Pawlenty spokesman Brian McClung said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

McClung also said that the Governor wants the project to find a local municipality that will partner with the team in the construction of a stadium.

The Vikings were noncommittal regarding the proposal, calling it (via exec Lester Bagley) a “a great start to the conversation.”

The conversation needs a great finish, too, or the franchise eventually could embark on a journey with a finish line in Los Angeles.
