Former Raiders pile on JaMarcus Russell

JaMarcus Russell is still an Oakland Raider, but his impending absence has empowered some of his former teammates to speak openly about the No. 1 overall pick.

Here are some highlights of a recent Outside the Lines episode focusing on Russell, compiled by the San Francisco Chronicle and clip from ESPN.

1.  Dominic Rhodes said Russell would often fall asleep in meetings:  “Is that the guy that’s going to lead us? . . .  I don’t think he has that mindset to be great.”

2.  An anonymous ex-coach said Russell was a “binge eater.”

3.  Former Raider offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry said Russell was way out of shape and “more comfortable with a role as a backup.”

4.  Former Raiders quarterback Andrew Walter blamed the Raiders some:  “If he was drafted by somebody else, it could be completely different,” Walter said.

Other than that, the report was fairly positive.

  4. SATAN567 says: May 4, 2010 5:03 PM

The fourth point has got to be the most telling. While JaMarcus has to take responsibility and act like an adult, the organization clearly does little to further the careers of its employees.

gee lets get this right, first BSPN, we all know that is the mecca of raiders haters, and the sf chronicle is filled with nothing but niners fans, and even David White who was the raiders beat writer now covers the niners, and the raiders beat writer is with the taliban.
Then you have all players who were cut/fired by the raiders beccause they sucked. The difference between these guys and J-Russ is J-russ will still be in the league after he gets cut.

  12. ceetown22 says: May 4, 2010 5:10 PM

damn… this just says a lot about the Raiders as an organization… they got fat and the culture changed… Walter’s comments really make you think… what if JR went to GB, PHI, NE or something like that? who knows…
either way, I’m glad we didn’t draft him (or Quinn for that matter)
    HAIL SKINS!

Once I saw the guy donning a faux mohawk tinted dark blue, and wearing a goofy winter hat with the ball on the end (you know the kind a 5 year child or a fruity NYC hipster might adorn) on the sidelines I knew he was trash..
NFL qbs don’t behave like that (winners or losers)
That and him being 280 lbs during the season, no QB at this size has succeded in pro football

  16. swervinmervin says: May 4, 2010 5:16 PM

Andrew Walter is just a bitter man. He stunk with the Raiders. And he stunk with New England. And it wasnt just that he stunk. He would get sacked and then put his head down and practically start to cry.
Bruce Gradkowski looked like a bum in Tampa nad Cleveland, and then he looked good in Oakland. So it goes both ways, Andrew.

On behalf of the University of Louisiana I apologize to all Raider fans.
That said part of the blame lies with your team. The dude should have never went in the top 10. Take a look at his game tapes from LSU. Specifically see the LSU v. Auburn game from 2006. The guy never had anything between his ears. He has all the talent in the world but I bet you can ask just about any fan of LSU were they shocked that he went first over all and they should say yes.
Blame the Sugar Bowl for that pick. He went head to head with the other can’t miss QB and smoked him. Turns out him and Quin are each busts in their own rights.

Exactly…which is why Walter’s comment makes no sense vis a vis J Russell and must be pretty much only his own agenda vs Oak. If he said it about someone who was a Raider but was then successful somewhere else at least it would have some basis. He might as well have said that about DeAngelo Hall who was a punk bitch in Oak..and everywhere else he has ever been too. JR is what he is just like DHall. I honestly think the Raiders would be just fine if they just let Cable coach the team and decide who to play and what system to run etc. They do have some talent, do play well at times and aren’t a bad team. Al needs to butt out of day to day ops/decisions on the field.

So anyway when that moron would come on the air, I would turn the radio off. The only source of entertainment and I would have rather spent it NOT listening to him. That guy just plain s-u-c-k-s.

  45. Shanahan's Rat Teeth says: May 4, 2010 6:13 PM

Dominic Rhodes: Was suspended for 4 games in 2007, just 4 months after signing with Oakland. Couldn’t get on the field & was cut in April 2008. Signed a 1-year deal with the Colts and rushed for 538 yards, then was cut. Signed a 2-year deal with the Bills in 2009 and was cut before the season started and is currently out of football.
Andrew Walter: was cut by Oakland in 2009 after failing to make an impression despite the struggles of Russell, Aaron Brooks, Marques Tuiasosopo, Dante Culpepper & Josh McCown during his stay. Holds the NFL record for most sacks taken by a QB in a single game. Signed with New England in 2009 but could not even win the number 3 spot, was cut before the season started and is currently out of football.
I guess Oakland was the reason for all of their problems, right?

The rest of the report included a story about how JaMarcus Russell beat the rest of theRaiders, by himself, in a game of tug-of-war–by tying the rope around his waste and sitting down until the other team got tired of pulling.

  49. 8man says: May 4, 2010 6:19 PM

That’s a load. Look, Dallas went 15-33 under Dave “5-11″ Campo and when they replaced him with Parcells, a lot of players that coasted under Dave and his coaches, started putting out and they went 10-6. Oakland made a big mistake by hiring Kiffin and THEN hiring a snot-nosed “kid” to be their QB coach. What they needed was a head coach that could put the fear of God into him and QB coach that would kick his ass.
Hell, the military would be a mighty lonely place if they didn’t kick some ass and take some names in boot camp and that’s what Russell needed (That and maybe a little tough love from Al).

“Afterall Russell isn’t the first QB the Raiders have ruined, eh Andrew?”—You actually believe Walter or Marinovich would have been good QB’s anywhere else? What about the “ruined” QB’s like Plunkett & Gannon who came to the Raiders and succeeded?
“They haven’t developed a QB since Ken Stabler, and George Blanda was mostly responsible for that”—So, the guy who drafted Stabler gets no credit for his success, but is solely responsible for all the team’s failures?
“I think Andrew Walter is right. Russell needed to go to a professionally run organization.”—Andrew Walter went to New England & got cut before the season started.
I’m not saying Al Davis doesn’t deserve blame for the team’s failures over the past 7 years or any past mistakes. Of course he does. But if you are going to hold him solely responsible for every misfortune, then shouldn’t he be given the same consideration for any success the team has had?

I read the tribute for me there today. I just want to let you know that I was banned for posting Richochet’s address. Richochet was stalking and calling me using a blocked number for over 6 weeks. I finally had enough and had some people trap his calls and found out his identity.
Maybe some of you could ask Jerry about this.

I have no problem crediting Al Davis with the success of the past, although he had Ron Wolf and John Madden.
But that was 25 freaking years ago, man!!!!!!!!!!!
FYI, Al Davis, the General Manager, is 80 years old now, and non-ambulatory, ok?
29-83 over the last 7 years. If he didn’t own the team he would have been fired 20 years go.

Anyone who really thinks Russell would have done any better on another team, is completely out of their mind. Sure, the Raiders have never been a QB training ground. Even in better times, they haven’t. Still, most of Russell’s failures fall on his shoulders, and to think otherwise is just being ignorant of the entire situation.

    Vegas,
The OTL segment by Ray Ratto, said everything I’ve been saying for years.
Nobody over in the Raiders Organization has any skin in the game, any ownership of the results, or any kind of emotional investment other than Al Davis.
It’s his show, he calls the shots. Everybody else there is just collecting paychecks.

  85. KoolKell says: May 4, 2010 9:07 PM

    Vegas
Did you hear what Dominic Rhodes said about the Raiders in that OTL piece?
“All Al Davis all the time, Coaches have no leadership ability because of it” He said it was a very different structure in Indy, where the football people put their heads together and came up with strategy.
    I paraphrased it.

  86. Vegas Raider says: May 4, 2010 9:12 PM

If Jamarcus was a DE it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.
But he is a QB. Those HAVE to be the hardest working guys on the team and the leader.
It’s that way in HS football, and the same in the pros.

  89. Vegas Raider says: May 4, 2010 9:35 PM

    KK,
No doubt Al is the enabler in all this. Ratto said Cable wanted to bench Russell, but was overrided. (wonder what week he actually wanted to bench him).
The Colts are a great well-run business, one of the best in all of sports, so tough to compare to them.
I don’t buy that Russell would be great somewhere else. Maybe he wouldn’t be on the cusp of being out of the league, but the kid just doesn’t have “it”.

  90. KoolKell says: May 4, 2010 9:52 PM

    Vegas
True. What I’m saying is, the Raiders either should have known the person they were drafting at #1, or drafted him with their eyes wide open and provided the mentor, stability and structure he needed.
    JaMarcus Russell 39 million
    Javon Walker 10 million
    DeAngelo Hall 8 million
5 Head Coaches in the last 7 years.
6 winning seasons in the last 20.
There’s something wrong with that Organization bigger than JaMarcus Russell.

  91. KoolKell says: May 4, 2010 9:58 PM

Russell was #1 on everybody’s draft board. In 08′ he was a developing QB who finished the season strong, then something happened in 09′.
The Raiders have a history of players sleeping in meetings, as Gannon and Rhodes said. Going around coaches to Davis, etc, etc, etc.
Another organization may have straightened his arse out.

  94. drummer1279 says: May 4, 2010 10:49 PM

The Raiders most likely didn’t do Russell any favors by changing most of the coaches so often, and by handling him with kid gloves. A lackluster O-line and WR core didn’t help either.
Reguardless of the situation, HE is supposed to be a proffesional at this level. He was given boatloads of money to lead a team. He failed to lead, study, work out, ect. Pretty much all of the thing’s he was paid to do, he either did not do, or did poorly. I’d say the vast majority is solely his fault. Perhaps another team could have made his potential surface, but with the lack of work ethic, I seriously doubt it.

It’s the pro’s. If you need someone to tap you on the shoulder and say that you should be in shape, that you should try, that you should stay awake, that you should care, you need to be cut.
The only one that is understandable is falling asleep in meetings. of course a mile run afterwards is usually deterrent enough

  99. Raiders757 says: May 5, 2010 7:54 AM

I’m sorry Indie, but Russell wasn’t the “consensus pick by EVERY expert”. There were quite a few who saw the warning signs and judged him by his entire career at LSU, instead of just the last game and pro-day workout. Many said there is no way he should be a #1 pick, but predicted he would be, because they knew Al Davis would fall for his big arm and ignore the obvious flaws this kid has. In reality, it was stupid to pick him anywhere higher than the third round. I felt this way at the time, and it blew my mind how a lot of the media gave him so much stock. Most LSU fans will tell you that he wasn’t all that great. Even when Al picked him #1 overall, the pick was criticized. Most everyone who blew smoke up Russell’s ass, turned tail and mentioned his well known lack of work ethic and will to do what it takes to succeed at the NFL level.
It was not a no brainer of a pick. You don’t pick an obvious project QB #1 overall, knowing you’ll have to pay him beyond what he is worth and be forced to throw him on the field right away. I was pissed when Al Davis picked Russell. The team had more pressing needs, and still do. It was easy to see that Russell didn’t have IT, and never will.

Walter is obviously still bitter. He obviously still feels he should have been the starter in Oakland and probably should be to this day. That he was ‘ done wring’ by the Raiders. Despite, as pointed out, there were like 6-7 guys he never could beat out. He played his way out of the starting job.Guys like Josh McCown and Tuiasasopo beat him out routinely. Then as mentioned he goes to NE and gets cut before the season and to this day is out of the NFL because no team will even make him their #3. But he deserved the starting job in Oakland. If he is right about Russell, it means Russell has been stealing money from the Raiders and intentionally putting forth no effort in the hopes of being released, with all his money, and signing with a “real team”. And that would be despicable. He obviously doesn’t want to be a Raider, probably never did.

Rhodes was already old by the time he got to the Raiders. In case you didn’t know, he had a pretty solid career with the Colts. Then the Raiders ruined his will to play. I guess mentioning the first 6 years of his career (pre-Raiders) would have made your point invalid about him. You act like he’s a disgruntled employee.

    Shanahan’s Rat Teeth,
“You do realize Rhodes played for the Colts for 6 years and won a Super Bowl before he went to the Raiders, don’t you? Or are you that stupid?”
—Jerry Rice played for the 49ers for 16 years & won 3 Super Bowls before he went to the Raiders, yet still managed 2 more 1,000 yard seasons + another 869 yard season, a Pro Bowl, and a Super Bowl appearance. Charlie Garner had 6,376 total rushing & receiving yards by the time he came to Oakland, but still managed 4,259 more in 3 seasons. Rhodes had 2,923 total rushing & receiving yards in 6 years w/ Indy, 372 in 1 season w/ Oakland. Yes, he had a good Super Bowl, but so did Timmy Smith.
“Rhodes was already old by the time he got to the Raiders.”
—He was 28, didn’t play in 2002 & was used sparingly except for his rookie year in 2001 & the latter part of 2006. Garner was 29 when he came to Oakland, Rice was 39 & both had played more. Don’t even try “Rhodes was a kick returner too.”
“In case you didn’t know, he had a pretty solid career with the Colts. Then the Raiders ruined his will to play. ”
—You saw the numbers above. How come Rice & Garner’s will to play weren’t ruined? I guess it was the Raiders’ fault Rhodes got a DUI & pissed his pants despite only blowing a .09, resulting in a 4-game suspension just 4 months after signing with the team.
“I guess mentioning the first 6 years of his career (pre-Raiders) would have made your point invalid about him. You act like he’s a disgruntled employee.”
—Actually, it validates my point even further. He was given an opportunity to become a lead back after an impressive stint in 2006, but instead violated the NFL’s substance abuse policy & missed the first 4 games of 2007. He blew his chance, got cut, played 1 year in Indy before they let him walk AGAIN, then couldn’t make it past training camp with the Bills.
So, a guy who FINALLY gets the chance to be the lead RB, after being a career backup & allowed to walk by the team he just won a ring with, responds by getting a .09 DUI, pissing his pants & getting suspended, thereby squandering his chance to be an offensive leader & letting down the team who took a chance on him.
Yet, he blames the team for not giving him playing time after missing those games, and is now giving his opinion on what a great leader should do?

You can make all the spoiled grapes accusations you want against:
Dominic Rhodes–out of football, see above
Randy Moss–did nothing to better his situation in Oakland after Vikings gladly traded him away, attitude & effort now questioned in NE
Rich Gannon–I respect his opinion. Great Raider who deserved better. Has been critical, yet objective.
Warren Sapp–did nothing to better his situation, was bitter that Davis didn’t publicly acknowledge his retirement & withdrew offer to have Sapp assist on pregame shows, etc.
Tim Brown–I respect his opinion. Has been critical yet objective.
Marcus Allen–I respect his opinion, but 2 sides to this story.
    D Burgess–5 sacks, 35 tackles in 1 year w/ NE, who gave up a 3rd & 5th. Out of football.
Andrew Walter–couldn’t even make 3rd string in NE. Out of football.
Charles Woodson–Hasn’t really had much to say. Good Raider who finally realized he needed to work harder.
Lane Kiffin–Ask Tennessee about this guy. Being a Raiders fan, you support a guy who purposely lost games & sabatoged your team?
Media–Plenty of anti-Raider agendas for various reasons.
Referees–Read Jerry Rice & Charlie Garner’s quotes about the officiating after coming from SF to Oakland.
NFL–Do some homework. Why do you think Rozelle & Tagliabue might have had something against Al Davis?
Illegal Immigrants–Based on what I saw on the blog, you’re the one with racist tendencies, not me.
But Al Davis record, 29-83 says it all–Every player on your list, as well as “coach” Kiffin, was a part of that record besides Marcus Allen. Aren’t any of them the least bit accountable for their performance?

JaMarcus Russell has official been cut from the Oakland Raiders. Though many were not amazed by the change in players, many are nevertheless wondering if his replacement, Jason Campbell, could bring the team to success or not. Just what exactly does Russell’s future hold? You never know, he may play for the next team, or never again. As for me, I am really ecstatic to see how the Raiders do this football year.
