Patrick Willis strikes gold with the Niners

NFL_willis1_250.jpgIn only three NFL seasons, Patrick Willis has established himself as one of the best linebackers in the NFL.  And now he’s going to be paid accordingly.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Willis has agreed to terms on a five-year, $50 million extension.  (It’s probably not a coincidence that Glazer and Randy Couture helped get Willis ready for the 2009 season with MMA training.)

His rookie deal runs through 2011.  The new deal puts him under contract through 2016.

It’s not yet clear how the 49ers navigated the 30-percent rule, which applies to all renegotiations signed in the uncapped year.  Per NFLPA records, Willis was due to earn a base salary of $760,000 in 2010, and $2.75 million next year.

We’ll break it all down once we get our hands on the contract.

    Bam Bam deserves it. He makes running backs quake with fear…

  2. CleanSlaton says: May 4, 2010 1:52 PM

    They were waiting for the better veteran linebacker, DeMeco Ryans, to sign his contract earlier this year. That’s what I’m talking about, Willis.

  3. Ryan_Mack says: May 4, 2010 1:52 PM

    Good for the Niners getting this done early.
    This guy’s a beast.

    People like him deserve the money. Works hard and is good in the lockeroom. People like TO need to be blacklisted and treated like a 1903 Slave.

    @CleanSlaton
    …Typical biased fan. Willis is far superior. Ryans is very good, not great. Willis is and will continue to be GREAT. This is coming from a Packers fan. Not biased at all on this topic. And since you are a Texans fan, enjoy another year of mediocracy.

    Are yiou suggesting that Ryans is BETTER than Willis? Ryans is a great linebacker, but Willis the best ILB in the NFL right now.

    WILLIS GOT PAID!!! This guy is THE next GREAT linebacker. He’s already great, but I mean GREAT, as in Butkus, Lambert, Singletary, Lewis GREAT.

  14. 49erFanLivingInDallas says: May 4, 2010 2:19 PM

    Worth every single penny. I hope to see him as a 49er for his entire career but you can never be sure about things like this. Big question is… at the end of his playing career, who’s going to be considered the better player… RayRay Lewis or Patrick Willis? Their careers are getting off to the same type of start on the field. Not so much off the field though…. P. Willis has been indicted on any type of a murder charge…

    @gurpbadesha
    Well, you just managed to ensure not a SINGLE football related comment will come from this point on with your “slave” post.
    Glad you thought that one through…

  16. 49erFanLivingInDallas says: May 4, 2010 2:22 PM

    @GurpBadesha
    Did you seriously just say that an African-American pro-athlete should be treated like a SLAVE?? Most. Ignorant. Comment. Of. The. Year.

    No LB is worth $10 million a year. I’m assuming that there’s a lot of funny money in that contract.

    You’re also an idiot because slavery was abolished in the 1860’s.. You ignorant f***…

  20. sluggerss says: May 4, 2010 2:33 PM

    THANK GOODNESS!!! I really didnt want to see him leave!

  21. Robert E Hunt Jr says: May 4, 2010 2:33 PM

    Wow. Could someone please explain to me why the owners are dead set on a work stoppage next year because they think the players are making too much money … While at the same time they’re handing out $50,000,000 extensions.
    Sense to me not make this does.

  22. sergep says: May 4, 2010 2:33 PM

  25. Levito says: May 4, 2010 2:42 PM

    Good for Willis, he’s earned it. Easily top 3 LB in the league.

  26. raiderrob21 says: May 4, 2010 2:47 PM

    Smart move. Lock him up! Dont want to lose him like they lost Julian Peterson and Andre Carter. With those 2 and Willis the last 2 years they would have been a lot better team.

  27. NinersRule! says: May 4, 2010 2:54 PM

    Worth every penny. He’s by far the best MLB in the NFL today

  28. pelters says: May 4, 2010 2:54 PM

    I think the niners wanted to get this done before the upcomming Santa Clara vote.

  29. tango says: May 4, 2010 3:04 PM

    Willis should get triple + what Al Davis gave that idiot JaJunk across the bay! Willis is the best linebacker in the NFL, bar none !

  30. Panda_Claus says: May 4, 2010 3:15 PM

    Great player, love to have him on my team. Still, that’s a whole lot to pay any LB. Have to wait and see what the guaranteed value of this contract comes down to.

  31. TP7 says: May 4, 2010 3:17 PM

    Is it bad that Justin Reis giggles everytime he hears that Dan LeBetard is guest hosting PTI?

  32. AZ Red Bird says: May 4, 2010 3:53 PM

    hope he gets injured soon :) J/K…no I’m not…

  33. Eric says: May 4, 2010 4:07 PM

    So how much a year does this make Beason worth?

  34. evrocka says: May 4, 2010 4:15 PM

    absolute no brainer move. after another amazing, league leading year the price would have only gone up. now they can concentrate on locking up vernon davis long term
