Brohm hopes to get head start in quarterback battle

Brian Brohm was one of those that the draft graders gave high marks to.

Once thought to be a possible top-10 pick, he slipped to the end of the second round.  He didn’t last two seasons in Green Bay.

Not even a useful third quarterback for the Packers, the Bills see Brohm as a possible starter.  ESPN’s Chris Mortensen wrote recently starting quarterback position will come down to Trent Edwards or Brohm.

Brohm will get a head start this weekend at the team’s minicamp, which is for rookies and second-year players.  (Brohm qualifies as a second-year player because of his lack of action.)

“I think it’s a pretty big advantage going into OTAs and the next
minicamps to get this time under my belt,” Brohm told the team’s official website.

Brohm needs all the practice he can get.  It seems like a safe bet both he and Edwards will start games for the Bills at some point in 2010.

Must be exciting for Bills fans to have the winner of this battle be the starter.

Brohm reminded me of Peyton Manning coming out of college. Same delivery and stance, smart, and a film rat. Peyton got thrown into the fire and didnt exactly play lights out. Maybe brohm needs to have the same thing done for him. He was one of my favorite QBs coming out of that draft. The bills don’t have much to work with but if given a chance I think he could become a better then average QB.

if there is one thing that Mike McCarthy knows, it is quarterbacks. I dont think A-Rod would be half the QB he is today without McCarthy. Look at what Favre did in his last season with the Packers……with McCarthy calling the shots.

as a bills fan I could really care less who wins this qb “battle”. The bills are gonna blow this year no matter how you cut the cookie. If I had to pick, might as well throw Brohm out there. I have no confidence in him @ all but Cmon Trent again. We know what he is or is not capable of. The Guys a pussy…..insert trent excuses here ________

The knock on Brohm isn’t his ball skills or his study habits. He doesn’t practice well. He gets shook and loses confidence. It must have been pretty bad for McCarthy to let him go.

  15. DT says: May 6, 2010 10:07 AM

McCarthy knows QB’s? Really? Is that why he stuck with Aaron Brooks in NO instead of Jake Delhomme? How about Alex Smith in SF. The other QB’s he’s worked with: Gannon, Gerbac and Bono…. hardly a ringing endorsement for developing great talent. Saying that Favre’s success was due to McCarthy is completely misleading.

  16. JJCheesehead says: May 6, 2010 10:13 AM

There are so many guys around the league that would give them a better chance this season…….but on second thought, maybe they dont want a chance this season.
A top 3 pick would be a good one for them. There is a very strong QB class next year, and we all know that they Bills dont have ‘the guy’ on their roster right now.
Too bad Lee Evans will continue to face double and triple coverage even after they have a franchise QB….no other options at wideout.

After all the Bills have been such stellar evaluators of QB talent the last 10 years or so.
Another year of Ralph Wilson football, another year of being one of the worst teams in the league.

Some of those QB’s most productive years came when McCarthy was coaching them. Gannon’s has even credited McCarthy for his MVP season. He had Smith for one year and Brooks had his best season with McCarthy.
    .
Here’s another tidbit. Get your facts straight before you spout off. You look silly.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme gives Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy a large share of the credit for his success in the NFL.
Delhomme was starting his fourth NFL season when McCarthy came to the New Orleans Saints in 2000 as the offensive coordinator under new head coach Jim Haslett.
While Delhomme had shown promise as an undrafted free agent out of Louisiana-Lafayette, he was reaching a critical juncture in his career after spending 1997 on the Saints’ practice squad and the next two seasons as the team’s third quarterback.
He’d also gone to NFL Europe during the ‘97 and ‘98 offseasons.
Then McCarthy arrived and opened an offseason “quarterback school” in which he broke Delhomme down and rebuilt him into the quarterback who led the Panthers to Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2003 and made the Pro Bowl in 2005.

Man, I hope Brohm wins this battle. I’ll make a fortune betting against this stiff!! Dude can’t hit the broadside of a barn and has a pathetic arm. If McCarthy couldn’t make anything out of this guy what makes you think Gailey will? Laughing my ass all the way to the bank!!!!

  20. bobinpuertorico says: May 6, 2010 10:36 AM

The worst part for the Bills is that after they finish with a winning record this year, they will be drafting too late to be able to get one of the top QBs in the 2011 draft.

  21. r00tabaga says: May 6, 2010 10:38 AM

McCarthy DID NOT let him go! Packers fans around here are idiots!!! He was taken off of their practice squad b/c GB only keeps 2 active QB’s on their roster…and Brett Favre was pretty good before QB-mesia-McCarthy was there too. They tried to keep Brohm but he left for a better opportunity to start. Jeez!
    Go BILLS-

  23. darth_vincent says: May 6, 2010 10:39 AM

    Hey DT,
McCarthy wasn’t the head coach in New Orleans, he was the o-coordinator. It wasn’t necessary his call to keep Brooks over Delhomme.
I will give you a point though as McCarthy once said after drafting him that “Brohm understood the playbook faster than anyone else he had ever coached”. It just never translated to the football field as actual production.

The problem with Brohm in Green Bay was he couldn’t throw a football. He looked nothing like the guy at Louisville. It’s like he had amnesia. I’ve never seen so many ducks fall 15 feet short of the receiver on intermediate routes.
To be cut after one season says all you need to know.

  27. Sleazy Snake says: May 6, 2010 11:41 AM

    Head Start?
Brohm is so bad he couldn’t win a forty yard dash race with a fifty yard head start.

  28. mackenzie1983 says: May 6, 2010 11:42 AM

Bills might not be the best team but they do have one of the best fan bases in the NFL.

  29. Meldog says: May 6, 2010 11:46 AM

We couldn’t pick up any veteran talent, and the QBs at the draft were picked up too early. I think St. Louis is crazy, and Denver is just trying to sell tickets.
The Bills just have to do the best they can with what they have. Edwards gets one more shot, Fitzpatrick is a solid backup, I don’t know what Brohm is capable of, I’ve only seen him play behind the #2’s

  30. Lex Luger says: May 6, 2010 12:53 PM

I feel sorry for the Bills fans who actually think Brian Brohm is an NFL quarterback. He was barely a div 1 qb in college after petrino left.
The guys says all the right things but at the end of the day, he has nothing and was clearly inferior to Matt Flynn when he was in gb.

  31. mission says: May 6, 2010 1:25 PM

    Brian Brohm = Peyton Manning????
    LOLLOLOLOLOLOL
Have you ever seen him throw a football? His arm is in the league of Chad Pennington’s… nooooodle.
Bills are screwed. Go Pack Go.

  33. kiera620 says: May 6, 2010 1:58 PM

Being a bills fan is kinda difficult sometimes. I think they should just go with whoever has the most potential to suck the least, probably edwards, though I honestly don’t think it matters which one starts.

  34. Nard100 says: May 6, 2010 5:35 PM

Hey Buffalo, did you hear JaMarcus just got release. How ’bout a 3-way qb competition for suckiest(sic) starter in the league. LOL

If this guy starts week 1, bet your house on whoever they are playing. Worked for me last year when he started against Atlanta.
