Kolb ready to compete with Vick, even if he doesn’t have to

Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid has made clear that Kevin Kolb is the starting quarterback and Michael Vick is his backup. But Kolb says that he’s ready to compete with Vick in training camp.

“That’s not my decision, I was happy to hear Andy had the confidence in me, but I also know that it’s always a competition, regardless of what he says,” Kolb said on the Dan Patrick Show. “I’m out there competing every single day, and this first minicamp was very competitive, even with the young guys. So if you’re not ready to compete, you’re in the wrong league, and in my opinion you’re in the wrong business.”

Although Vick recently made comments that some interpreted as complaining about not getting a chance to compete for a starting job, Kolb said there’s no tension at all between him and Vick.

“It’s very good,” Kolb said of his relationship with Vick. “Mike and I have always had a good relationship. We actually have a lot in common. He’s kind of a country boy himself and we get along really well.”

Kolb also says he maintains a friendship with Donovan McNabb, who was traded to the Redskins to make room for Kolb as the starter.

“We talked three or four days after that,” Kolb said. “I think -- I know -- that we’ll remain friends.”
