Whitner thinks the league should take away Cushing's award

One of the best (and some would say worst) parts about Twitter is immediacy.

The moment Brian Cushing’s suspension was announced, writers, fans, teammates, and other players around the league had their say.

More than one media member said they’ve heard rumors about Cushing’s use before.

Texans safety Dominique Barber summed up the reaction from Houston: “F*****kkkkkk”

The most interesting comment came from Bills safety Donte Whitner, who reacted angrily. “B. Kushing suspended for sterods! I don’t respect guys that CHEAT! . . . They should take his Defensive rookie of the year
away
!”

It’s not a crazy notion.  MDS mentioned the “Shawne Merriman rule,” which means that Cushing won’t be allowed to win any awards or go to the Pro Bowl this year.

But it’s fair to deduce based on the timeline of Cushing’s failed appeal that performance enhancing drugs helped him in 2009.

In the Olympics, they take away your medal for a failed test. The NFL should do the same.  Jairus Byrd: come collect your gold.

  1. so maybe they should take julius peppers 20 sacks away from him also back when he failed his drug test? seems fair. jairus byrd should be R.O.Y. though in my opinion. Cushing has always been a juicer.

  2. Whitner should spend a little bit more time learning how to tackle, and a little less time proselytizing on Twitter.
That being said, I appreciate his stumping for Byrd to get the award. He’s one of the only playmakers the Bills have.

  3. Donte Whitner should shut his piehole and quit whining like a little girl. East Coast Primadonna.

  4. He deserves worse than a 4 game suspension, trade him to the Vikings where he can play with the other cheaters.

  5. Texans safety Dominique Barber summed up the reaction from Houston: “F*****kkkkkk”
    lol

  6. The league probably just watched some game tape to determine Cushing was a spiker. Most rookies don’t go after guys the way he did last season.

  7. Byrd wants to know if accepting the award means he’ll have to submit to a drug test.

  8. Once you get an award, they should NEVER be able to take it away from you.
    Signed,
All the MVP’s in baseball who used steroids.
(and maybe even an all time home run king).

  9. Let me clarify…..Clay Matthews, are you next? (To be busted for steroids?) Hmmmmm………….

  10. God bless you Donte Whitner! Another University of Spoiled Children cheater.
Take away his award. He and Merriman, all cheaters shouldn’t win awards.

  11. One of Donte Whitner’s better Tweets, (the fact that I know what his other Tweets have been is kind of sad) the league can’t take away stats, but awards should be taken away and this one clearly belongs to Jairus Byrd.

  12. Good lord, I was really hoping the Saints were gonna draft this kid last year, but with all the bullshit that’s going on within our organization already THIS year, damn I’m glad we didn’t.
    Whew!
Take the award away… he’s a manufactured product… not the real deal.
    PA

  13. I was surprised Byrd didn’t win it outright in the first place. That guy made plays! Classic case of name recognition. Not saying Cushing didn’t have a good year, but if Byrd had been taken in the first round last year, he would’ve had a better shot at the award.

  14. Getting testy
Earlier this month, the website NFLDraftBible.com erroneously reported that USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews failed league-administered steroids tests at the scouting combine. The league denied the report, as did the players, and the website eventually retracted it and issued an apology.
Cushing, the only USC player among the nine draft invitees, said Friday that he doesn’t believe the story will affect his stock when teams choose today.
“Any kind of rumor that tarnishes your name will make you angry,” he said. “You work hard for 22 years, and someone who’s never played football probably in their life just writes something on their website and takes that away from you. I’m glad it’s cleared up now. I knew it would be. And, hopefully, there won’t be any consequences.”

  15. “immediacy?”
    What’s that?
Sounds like ampats wifes’ response when queried about his in-bed stamina…

  16. Where is CleanSlaton at? That retard was complaining about not enough coverage of the 2nd best city in Texas only a few hours ago

  17. @boltmancraft:
Whitner is from Ohio, which is in the Midwest. I swear. You can even look it up on a map.

  18. Nothing good can come from football players … tweeting.
A better question is why Cushing was selected in the first place? The AP selects the ROY. Well, after the allegation during the Combine, maybe those reporters should have done a little investigating. USC is a program with question marks. Cushing was a player with question marks. Those selections are rarely runaway choices. The AP could just as easily have chosen someone without so many question marks and this wouldn’t be an issue.

  19. Not sure why anyone would disagree with this notion. Hell, Peter Rose isn’t allowed in baseball because he bet on the game (without having any control on the games outcome). Cushing is a cheater and should be suspended + have any awards stripped.
Though DDub does have a Twitter addiction, he is 110% correct!!!

  20. Don’t matter the sport, if someone is caught cheating/doing ‘roids, any and all awards they won should be stripped away in addition to suspension. Funny how fans know who is doin’ droids before the NFL gets around to it…..just do the Barry Bonds test, if their head is dispoportionate to rest of body (Clay Matthew, A.J. Hawk etc.) their doin’ ‘roids. doesn’t take a genius or drug test to figure it out.

  21. Well now hand the award over to Clay Matthews jr, he deserved the award from the start. Did the Texans go to the playoffs??? Uumm no, I believe the Packers did. Hey Texan fan better hope he doesn’t get injured, we all know what happens when roid players get hurt, they miss the season…

  22. White guys need steriods to do what black athletes can naturally do. Take away Cushing’s award.

  23. you can’t take awards back…there’s no room for indian-giving in sports. history revisionists suck. put an asterisk by his name if need be…but the notion of changing history is bs

  24. So many Bills haters here. Totally unnecessary, the Bills suck as is, why this constant bashing.
But Whitner is right, take his award away and send a message to NFL players that this stimulant comes with more than a slap on the wrist like in the MLB.
I, as others, am not surprised to hear this either. I knew of Cushing when he was a senior in high school, and I had a good friend who played against him in the Governors Cup (I believe) New York v. New Jersey all-star football game, and there were whispers of him using then.

  25. And just when you think the internet can’t get any stupider, JimmySmith posts a comment.

I agree! This clown owes the Fans and the Texans organization an apology. Imagine if the Trexans were to give Cushing a huge long term deal after last season then his steroid use is exposed (as if we all didnt know already) and his play declines greatly after he has to stop or be booted out of the league.
what a clown. cheater and horrible role model. no respect at ball for this douche

  27. Thought u guys stopped following Whitner and suggested everyone else do the same after he had some lame superbowl ticket give away gone wrong or something

  28. Clay Matthews should be tested weekly. And A.J Hawk, even though he sucks, just because of the shape of his head. I heard he will be starring in Mask II this summer.
    JimmySmithLikesBoys.

  29. I guess this vindicates that Draftbible site that said he failed the drug test for roids. He looked juiced at USC too.

  30. The sad thing is they’re probably all using performance enhancing drugs, its just that some get caught and others are better at hiding it and getting away with it. It’s doubtful that Byrd was doing anything substantially different from Cushing so why give it to the guy who merely didn’t get caught?

  31. Whitner is right, he had an unfair advantage. Not to mention he probaly started juicing well before he joined the NFL, so he’s had this advantage for years. The 2nd place ROY should win, and from what I remember that was Byrd (even though he was put an IR towards the end of the season.)

  32. The league office will just burn the results and then let him keep his trophy. Ask the Patricheats.

  34. Taylor Mays and Cushing are best friends and lived together at USC and dreamed together about the NFL.
Wonder if Mays has ever used?

    ——————————————————–
wow. yea lets assume every player now takes roids. A free safety for the Bills must take steroids because you know—–steroids help you read the QB’s eyes and jump routes

  37. They ALL juice.
    Get over it.
He just didn’t mask it right.
    Whittner is a lying hypocrite.

Dumbest comment yet. Pretty sure Merriman and Peppers arent white.
…and black guys cant play QB etc, etc. Are people really this stupid?

  39. Clay Matthews was obviously the most dominant (play after play) of all those and got stronger as the year went on.
I’d love to see Byrd hit 9 INTs again…. (netgennahappen)
    CM3!!

  40. Noone deserved the RotY last year more than Byrd, even BEFORE Cushing’s drug test. A rookie for a sub-par team finds a way to lead rookies in INTs not even playing the entire season (out last 2 games due to injury).

  42. People are sticking their heads in the sand if they don’t suspect most O-Lineman, D-Lineman, linebackers & some RBs aren’t on some type of PEDs. Hell, one current QBs jaw has grown 4″ since college. Been lifting for 20 yrs now–seen lots of this stuff. One gym owner was happy to find out he was diabetic–yes happy–so now he could use lots of insulin legally. It’s not right but it is what it is & lashing out at those who bring this up is foolhardy.

Black players rape girls (lawrence taylor) because they can’t pick up girls like white players do.

  46. It’s too bad Cushing went this route because he might have been close to being just as good without the ‘roid use. We’ll just have to wait and see how he plays coming off his suspension and ‘roid free. I have to agree as well with The ToolofTools statement about MLB MVP’s. Unless someone breaks his record without the slightest hint of being juiced I will always consider Hank Aaron(whom I saw play as I am 56 years old) as MLB’s All-Time Home Run King.
Jairus Byrd should be given the D-ROY award, and Cushing should make a public apology to the Texan fans for this self-made mess.

  47. JimmySmithBlows says:

Clay Matthews should be tested weekly.
Are you still pissed that Clay yanked the ball out of Petersons hand and took it the other way for a T.D.? Better get used to it, Matthews is a BEAST.

  48. DB26 Pete Rose bet on games in which he was a manager. So it’s safe to say he had control over the outcome. Keep quiet unless you have checked the facts.

  49. Whitner should be pissed off. His teammate got ripped off. I think Jarius Byrd should of won the ROY outright now that its know that Cushing cheated his way to it there’s no doubt in my mind who really was the winner.
The sad part is if the NFL doesnt strip him of it 20 years from now the only thing people will remember is Cushing won ROY and everyone will forget who the true winner of the award was. Im not a Texans hater or a Bills sympathizer. I just think fair is fair and Byrd should get his place in history.
Same thing should go for who ever was the runners up to Julius Peppers and Shawn Merriman. You shouldnt be able to cheat your way to Canton.

  50. Everyone has failed to mention the fact Byrd had 9 ints in only 14 games. Award should be his hands down. O and also did not start the first three games. Not bad for a second round pick who was CONVERTED to safety in the offseason, which is what almost EVERYONE fails to mention. give him some cred.

  51. Bazooka joe is obviosly a white dude intending 2 rile the white ppl up. lol and he did just that!! what black guy calls himself bazooka joe?? LMAO well done joe, well done.
