"Ray Lewis Way" to be unveiled in Baltimore on Tuesday

A full 14 years after entering the league and a decade after taking the Ravens to the franchise’s only Super Bowl win (including its time in Cleveland — that should be good for 75 more comments), linebacker Ray Lewis is getting an honor usually reserved for folks who are retired and/or deceased.

On Tuesday, a street in Baltimore will be named “Ray Lewis Way.”  The Ravens announced the coming honor on Sunday evening.

Specifically, a section of North Avenue in Baltimore will receive a new label in honor of Lewis, a perennial All Pro and future Hall of Famer.

Sad isn’t it? Half of these morons were chirping left and right for the Big Ben talk to stop when there were countless witnesses attesting to the stupid and illegal stuff he does on a regular basis, but a guy who was exonerated of any crime over a decade ago still gets ‘stabbing’ comments posted any time there is an article about him. Stop trying to blow the dust off that old subject because its a foot thick now and done with. Instead find something new to talk about or just shut the hell up for god’s sake, because the phrase ‘beating a dead horse’ doesn’t even do that ancient story justice. Real original Steeler and Bengal fans. Looks at the proven criminals on your own franchises rosters before attacking someone who was vindicated of any and all wrong doing. Sad, so sad.

Hey Art, Ray Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, nothing more. The two guys who were on trial with him didn’t plead out and ended up getting off because of lack of evidence. Everyone seems to forget that part.
The point is, the guy learned from his mistake. He’s kept his nose clean since then. If that’s not good enough for you and your “common sense” standards, then so be it. I’ll be in Canton when they unveil the bust.

  69. r3volution11 says: May 9, 2010 10:21 PM

At the trial, the vast majority of testimony was either inconclusive or supported the defense’s contention that Lewis acted solely as a peacemaker. ESPN legal analyst Alan J. Baverman said, “as to Ray Lewis, there is no evidence that he assisted anybody in a stabbing or encouraged anybody to do a stabbing which would make him a party to felony murder, malice murder, or felony assault with a knife.”
    If people would only read.
    Ignorance is bliss.

  70. art vandelay-rau says: May 9, 2010 10:21 PM

@theravenlives2:I wonder why there was a lack of evidence? Couldnt possibly have been rayenthal helping his friends dispose of anything, could it?Then ratting on those friends, knowing there wasnt enough to convict those 2 anyway. That couldnt have happened could it?Maybe there wouldnt be so much snivling about Rayenthal,if he just played football w/out the preening, dancing, whining, complaining.

And it is admirable that after killing two people that Ray-Ray “kept his nose clean”
if ben deserves six games – ray should have been gone a long time ago and Stallworth should never suit up again – but Godell is not required to be fair or logical….

  74. zabam says: May 9, 2010 10:25 PM

When Rich Eisen asked him if he had spoke with Sergio Kindle yet he started his sentence with “when I drafted him…” he had to correct himself and say “when WE drafted him”….he has such over blown sense of purpose. So many people talk about how he “pumps” all his players up with his pre-game talk and bouncing around but if you watch his team-mates react to him they’re all basically saying “yeah, ok I get it….please walk away from me now”. I’m serious.. watch their body language. There’s a ton of youtube videos you can watch where his teammates just don’t care.

  86. Dont Taze Me Bro says: May 9, 2010 10:36 PM

Ray Lewis in not a murderer, but he did obstruct the investigation and he does know who committed the murder and he helped that murderer go free.
It doesn’t matter what Ray says, and let’s be honest, half of what he says is flat out jibberish. It will be sad day when we are subjected to him as an analyst, which we all know will certainly happen. For some reason the media treats Ray as if he’s a national treasure, hanging on every half nonsensical phrase he utters as if he’s Vince Lombardi and Martin Luther King rolled into one.
No, it doesn’t matter what Ray says. What he’s done has shown his true character. When put to the test, he knowingly helped a friend get away with murder. That’s the real Ray Lewis Way.

@IStateYourName & @Dont Taze Me Bro: Very well put.Lewis defenders say he only pleaded to obstruction of justice. The very charge shows what happened. Will it ever be “known”to the masses,no.Will it ever be “known”the lengths to which Rayenthal obstructed justice? No.The murder/murderers will remain free,& the person who knows who they are(Outside themselves and the 2 dead people)is Rayenthal. The defense concocts some story about him as a peacemaker, who is there to argue that? His boys he helped? The 2 people dead in the street? You can draw your own conclusions to what happened.Lewis fans will draw one,and the rest of NFL fans will draw another.
But for a city as much of a sh*t-hole and crime-ridden as baltimore to name a street after him, they are asking for mocking and ridicule,no matter what he does on the field.

But on the flip side I know Redskin fans wouldn’t mind it so much if we were here making “Sean Taylor is a murderer jokes”, as well as his family for that matter. Same goes for Derent Williams and Fred Lane. There are some envious crazy people out there and I’m not so sure that some of the commenters here aren’t crazy and envious.

If you are a Vietnam Vet, you are labeled a baby killer and murderer.
If you are in the NFL, you get another zillion dollar contract.
Of course, killing on behalf of the USA can get you into trouble and even prosecuted by the USA because you should know your enemy and know when to stop killing within a war zone. After all, you should know that hooded stranger was different from THAT hooded stranger.
Killing while in the NFL is based on how good of a player you are. You can be part of murder and still get a top NFL contract. Then you make the ultimate effort of raising your hand in salute of pricey fly overs of NFL stadiums.
    Life is good, ain’t it?

Im sure w/his mentoring,Donte Stallworth will have a killer year in baltimore
    ———————————————-
Gee, Art, you seem to just have all the answers, don’t you? Nevermind his attorney went to the DA in Atlanta and said, “Waddaya got?” It took a few days before he came back with the answer…NOTHING. Lewis plea bargained to obstruction of justice because he didn’t want to go before a jury and wanted to continue his career. Even a Raven-hater like you has to admit that he has kept his nose clean since then. You keep missing that point. You’ve already done what the legal system never could – you’ve tried and convicted the guy. Thank God that idiots like you don’t run the judicial system.

If Ray-Ray played on the Yankees, was paired with Tiger Woods in a major, had a Nike/and or Miller beer contract, and stabbed someone in a glitzy neighborhood like Brentwood, ESPN would devote a 24/7 channel to him.
Ray Lewis is just a guy who got accused of murder, but somehow got just an obstruction of justice charge, and then went back to play for millions in the NFL. If you were accused of murder and then pleaded it down to an obstruction of justice charge, would you still have your job?
The NFL and NFL owners love thugs and drug user AS LONG AS THEY ARE STARS. Brett Favre was an admitted illegal Vicodin user but never got one second of NFL suspension. But other players are suspended 4 weeks for drug use.
In the NFL, you can be charged with murder, plead obstruction of justice for refusing to give details about the murder, and get big bucks and streets named after you.
In the NFL, you can admit to being on Vicodin but NEVER BE SUSPENDED one day, because you are a star, but other players get suspended for drug use.
The key point in the NFL is if you are liked by the media or can pretend to like the media and give lots of quotes, you will be a star and can do just about anything, including having your home boys commit murder.

@theravenlives2:by the sheer name of the charge obstruction of justice,he obstructed the police from solving a fatal double stabbing. Why didn’t the DA have anything? Rayenthal and his boys obstructed justice and covered it up.You can drink your purple kool-aid and wear your purple camo, which can provide you w/a reason why you are so biased.Bottom line,if Rayenthal was a redskin or steeler, you would be blasting him all over this board. You make it seem like he has become a saint(and judging by some of the idol-worshipping of him on this board,he already is)just because he hasnt got arrested in years. He helped cover up a double murder!!!Just because he didnt do the slice n dice, doesnt mean he is ignorant as to who did it.But in your book,he gets a pass b/c he has been a model(like millions of other Americans NOT involved in a double murder)citizen for the past few years. It’s people like YOU who run the judicial system, letting murderers out after 5 of 20 yrs served,Sex offenders out 2yrs of a 6yr bid,b.c they behaved in prison.Or people w/6 dui’s driving around killing people, beacause you plead down and plead down to avoid “costly”trials. It’s idiots like YOU who keep the violent ones ON the street. You call a guy a dickhead for expressing his desire to move out of baltimore. Is it his fault he doesn’t want to live around the crime, filth, corrupt, city that you seem so proud of.There are more gangs in Baltimore then teams in the NFL and more gang members then cops. But hey,put your purple camo on hun, yell “O” in the middle of the National Anthem and support a team who supports a murderer(s),just like the city is about to on Tuesday.

    That doesn’t make any sense.
Consider the *facts:* Witnesses state that Ray Lewis was more involved as a peacemaker.
Witnesses state that Ben Rothlisberger was at the scene of the crime and acted accordingly as accused.
    That’s a huge difference.
You have the police in one case trying to accuse a big name of something they didn’t properly have the case for. And in the other case you have a city where the DA did his job properly to determine the facts. The DA determined he couldn’t win in the case but it was obvious Ben Rothlisberger did something wrong.
All I see is a bunch of football fanatic bias in all of these posts.
Everyone on here knows if they had Ray Lewis on their team during his best years they’d actually do their due diligence to determine the facts as best as possible.
But he’s not, so you do your best to ignore what has been stated and released publicly and base your opinion on rumors, assumptions, NFL conspiracies (seriously people, ridiculous) or some other crap to make yourself feel better.
In the end you’re still just as ignorant as the next fanatic who posted below you.
Stated one more time – ignorance is bliss.

@art vandelay-rau – give it a break already. ray lewis is a great football player. he is not a great person. he disappears when the team loses and he’s in your face when the team wins and it’s “his” defense. but you can not deny that the man is in the top two or three MLB’s to ever plae the game. he didn’t commit murder. he committed stupidity. you act like the men who were killed were innocent bystanders. they came looking for a fight and ended up dead. do you know the real story behind why they came looking for a fight? probably not. i have heard through the grapevine what the “real” story is and it isn’t pretty. so stop acting like these pieces of garbage that got shanked were actually angels in disguise. unless perhaps one of them was your boyfriend or partner or whatever. give it a break. we don’t care about your police and legal expertise. don’t go away mad…. just go away….

Following a Super Bowl XXXIV party in Atlanta on January 31, 2000, a fight broke out between him and another group of people, resulting in the stabbing deaths of Jacinth Baker and Richard Lollar. Lewis and two companions, Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, were brought to an Atlanta police station for questioning. Eleven days later, the three were indicted on murder and aggravated assault charges.
Lewis’s attorney arranged for the murder charges against Lewis to be dropped in exchange for his testimony against Oakley and Sweeting, and a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice.[20]. Lewis was sentenced to one year of probation and was fined US$250,000 by the NFL

Good job trying to change the subject.
My point is that the accusers report was substantiated by multiple witnesses to the events that occurred outside of the bathroom. Obviously since witnesses stated that Ben’s guards stopped people from entering the bathroom, there were no witnesses inside. But it’d be funny that she’d have everything else outside of the bathroom correctly stated according to time line but have that minor detail of rape incorrect.
Since what happened involving Ray Lewis occurred outside, there were multiple witnesses of the fight. Those witnesses stated he (let’s use numbers because it makes us look smarter) (1) did not have a knife (2) acted as a peacemaker (3) none of the group murdered those people.
That’s right! Ray Lewis, and the two people he testified against on behalf of Atlanta, never were found guilty of murder.
So if I’m wrong for *joking* that Ben is a rapist then you most assuredly are wrong for *stating* that Ray is a murderer.

No, because you’ve omitted key facts in your wishful account of what went on with Roethlisberger.
The bar manager testified he saw what went on in the back area: he saw Ben talking to the young woman, who was sitting on a stool. There never was anyone sighted in the bathroom as the accuser stated, and her story (which version are you believing by the way, as it changed several times?) simply doesn’t pan out.
The “minor detail” of rape she added later — her first report to the cops was, no I wasn’t raped, and I’m not even sure if I had sex.

Perhaps the best inside linebacker of all time…best Raven of all time. If you don’t respect Ray Lewis than you do not respect this game. Enough said from a Jets fan.

Oh yes…. There is Frankie Boy…. was waiting for you to crawl out from under your rock. Obstruction of justise certainly is as bad as rape isn’t it. What’s wrong Frankie… did you Ben blow up doll spring a leak? What do you do now that your god has been unmasked as a sexual predator. Poor Frankie Burns…. Take your thumb out of your mouth and you might type faster….. Miscreant!
    —————————————
Yes, that’s me — ooh you really got me that time! Next you’ll be calling me “scalliwag” or worse, “rapscallion.” Heavens to Betsy, I don’t know if I can take it!
Just pointing out the facts, scrotum squeezer — like for example, how when you talk about Ben you are dealing in SHADOWS and ALLEGATIONS. Versus Ray, where the charges are documented and the orange-jumpsuit pics are there for all to see.
Also how amusing it is for your boy r3volution to get all “c’mon let’s reason and not condemn on hearsay” when it comes to one of his own.
    Catch ya later, ball boy.

    Ignorance is bliss.
    ————————————–
I love the guy who busts on others for ignorance, yet manages to screw up the facts of a case involving some other team’s players something fierce.
Dude, you have the Roethlisberger “facts” so screwed up, it’s not funny. Typical PFT message board hypocrite.
Better go back and check who really saw what and when, in the back by the bathroom.

Oh Frankie….. I am wounded. Not as badly as your god rapistburger but wounded nonetheless. See the difference between you and me, other than the fact that I have XY chromosomal pattern and you don’t, is that I will admit that Ray is just a person who has foibles, foulups, and is human. That being said, he is the best MLB to ever play the game.
The more you hear about Rapistburger the more this is to dislike. He is a major league TURD. He is a sexual predator. Not well liked by his team. Jerkoff every time he goes to a bar. I don’t however, think I have EVER heard you question your god. Can’t do that now can you. Might get struck down by lightning. Go back to your mommy’s basement with your Ben blowup doll. Football season starts in a few months. By then you will need your seasonal shower anyway.

That’s right folks: Baltimore, only 7 pro football championships behind Cleveland. :) Good luck catching up!

When you have to name your history lesson “pro football championships”, you’re teaching ancient history. The “Super Bowl” has been around for almost 50 years. What have you done for us in the last 4 decades, Cleveland? You haven’t even played in a championship game since the merger. Smiley face or not, that is weak smack.

According to the Chris Rock formula the amount of violence on a given street is determined by the amount of violence that person supported in real life, only with an inverse relationship. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. street and Ceaser Chavez way will be very violent streets. Time will only tell how violent Ray Lewis way is, but in the court of the PFT irony committee, the guilt of Ray Lewis will be determined by how much violence is on the street barring his name.

Was going to chime in on Murderers Row, but obviously we havent forgot about his past…

Ray, the murderer, always does his interviews like a preacher now….
Ben is an idiot, but Ray Lewis “killed” somebody

Not my fault that you’re hurt by the truth. Don’t worry the Raven might catch up by the time your great-grandkid has grandkids. Also – check your language. Cleveland HAS played in championship games since then…

    @ Don’t Taze Me Bro
At least you tried to make an insightful comment about Ray Lewis, unlike the usual collection of hicks who oblige us with their hilarious Ray Lewis Murder quips any day Mr. Florio needs a few dozen more clicks. As predictable as Pavlov’s dog.
But here is what I’ll say about your comment, DTMB, regarding Ray helping to conceal the identity of the those who stabbed Baker and Lolar. Yes, his initial instinct when the police rolled up on his limo was to clam up and tell those with him to keep quiet too. And for that he paid a heavy price when he was convicted for obstruction.
However, Ray quickly came clean with the details of the events that occurred that night: how his group was attacked by Baker, welding a bottle, and how they responded by fighting back and then fleeing. In fact he testified on behalf of the State against his “friends” Oakley and Sweeting — whom a jury acquitted after a half day of deliberation.
Ray was wrong for hanging out with questionable people at questionable hours, and he was wrong for being uncooperative with police. But he learned a lesson and has noticeably changed in the ten years since it all went down. Which is more than you can say about a dozen other NFL players who have had multiple transgressions in more recent years.
Does Ray blather nonsense at times? Yeah. He has an ego and isn’t afraid to share it. But it hardly makes him a bad guy.
People rarely talk about the regular volunteering he does with local police to help train them. Nor does anyone mention that the street named in his honor was done because it’s in the part of town where Ray distributes thanksgiving turkey baskets every year.
But, you know, whatever. Back to the jokes.

Wow, you admit he has “foibles” pretty much like every other person — ooh you sure did admit a lot there bud. Right before of course you jumped into that sweet sweet compliment. Way to get all honest and fault-recognizing dude!
Listen, when you and all your Raven fan buds stop drooling over Ray’s pre-game chicken dance as they pretty much show their approval for everything he’s done — THEN maybe we’ll talk about how hard you hyprocrites want Steelers fans to come down on Ben.
Until then, you can take your double standard and use it for a suppository. Mmkay bud?

Like the ones you probably made or laughed along with when the funnies were directed at Roethlisberger? Funny how that works huh?
And yeah, never mind Ben came up with the Police K-9 fund, or works with Make a Wish kids, or footed the bill for a whole pee-wee team to fly out and play a game… nah we’ll get one-sided Sport Illustrated articles which all the sheep will baah at as they graze.
But hey, whatever, as long as guys like ppdoc can continue to live in their TMZ world all is good. Right?

  190. shaslers says: May 12, 2010 1:17 PM

Uh Frank, sorry I don’t fit your stereotype, but no, I haven’t made a single Rapistberger-style joke or done anything to pile-on at all on your boy Ben.
It would be convenient to brush aside my attempt to fairly characterize Ray Lewis by assuming that I’m not so level-headed when it comes to Ben.
Problem is, each man stands on his own actions–the one doesn’t have anything to do with the other. There’s that, and there’s the fact you just accused me of something completely wrong.
But hey, false and loose accusations are something you seem pretty comfortable with, aren’t they?

  191. Frank Burns says: May 12, 2010 2:54 PM

While you’re busy ragging, shaslers, maybe you should notice the word “probably” that I used. Sorry if this place is so full of hypocrites, I just assumed you might be one of them. If you didn’t join the sheep, then I congratulate you.
The rest still stands though — Ravens fans will have the right to demand things from Steeler fans, the minute they stop going all ga-ga over Ray’s pre-game antics. That hasn’t changed.
