A week after 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis inked a five-year, $50 million extension, a key member of the team’s offense is moving toward a big-money deal of his own.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the team and tight end Vernon Davis are working toward a new deal. Per Maiocco, Davis has requested a five-year, $40 million contract, with $25 million guaranteed.

Davis, the sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft, is due to earn a base salary of $5.7 million for 2010, according to NFLPA records. It’s the final year of Davis’ rookie deal.

In 2009, Davis enjoyed the best year of his career, by far. After three years in which he maxed out at 52 receptions for 509 yards and four touchdowns, Davis racked up 78 catches for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns.
