Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reported earlier today that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has parted ways with CAA. Since then, Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco has “reported” via Twitter that Merriman fired CAA and signed with David Dunn.
Ochocinco’s decision to mention Merriman’s move makes little sense, given that Merriman and Ochocinco routinely squabble on Twitter, and in light of the fact that Ochocinco is represented by neither CAA nor Dunn. Making the situation even more strange is the fact that Merriman “retweeted” Ochocinco’s report.
In SportsBusiness Daily‘s “Closing Bell,” Mullen points out that five days must pass between the firing of an NFL agent and the hiring of a new one. Though Mullen doesn’t specifically state that the five-day rule possibly was violated in this case, she reports that the firing of CAA by Merriman occurred over the weekend.
If true, this means that the transaction violated the five-day rule. But we can’t imagine Dunn, who has a history of having the NFLPA chasing him around, committing what would be a blatant violation of the five-day rule.
florio why do put quotes around ocho reporting things? he is more factual than u are with his reporting
Just what every player needs, an agent who can’t count.
Florio, I used to wonder why people hated on you in the comments section; the more I read PFT the more I realize why. Your incessant whining about some inane rule infraction makes me wish I could slap people through the internet.
P.S. Merriman is a turd and Ochocinco has chronic diarrhea of the mouth.
Mike, this one’s a waste of electrons….
An agent doing something shady, man that is shocking.
Perhaps they just agreed and will sign any papers when the 5 days are up? I would imagine this is the case, certainly the agent knows that the rule exists.
Why not the dumb ass violated the steroid policy?

Who cares what a dude with shrinking forehead muscles or an overrated Nancy of a wideoit does? Seriously – stick to Favre Watch.
The “five day rule” is a myth. It was placed into the agent rules to give the old agent 5 days to change the client’s mind. It merely prevents the new agent from negotiating on behalf of the client for 5 days; other than that there are NO other ramifications.
In other words THIS IS A NON-STORY!
