Ochocinco claims that the Bengals are bringing in JaMarcus Russell

OCNN strikes again.

Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco, who launched the Ocho Cinco News Network last year as part of a brilliant personal marketing campaign, has dropped a very strong hint regarding the next destination of former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Ochocinco says to Russell, “I’ll see you at minicamp” and then, “Oops, did I just leak that info?”  (Which is dangerously close to, “Did I do that?” . . . which makes us think that Chad perhaps should be doing the Urkel on Dancing with the Stars.)

In response, ESPN’s Adam Schefter claims that the Bengals and others have called Russell, but that “there are no plans for him to be at any minicamps now.”

If the Bengals sign Russell, it fits with their M.O. of finding bargains.  Though the Bengals have a franchise quarterback in Carson Palmer, some think that an elbow injury that plagued him in 2008 was still bothering him in 2009.

I KNEW that they’d look at him. It’s actually not a bad move if they did. They’d get him cheap, they need a decent backup QB (which, IMO, Russell would be even though he was a shitty starter), and they just stack their roster with even more former first rounders.

  58. Kappy says: May 11, 2010 5:26 PM

Russell is an immature kid who still has all the talent in the world. Chances are the kid didn’t have or didn’t know his father growing up. He was given millions of dollars & thrown to a joke of an organization in Oakland. Russell could flourish under the wing of a player-friendly coach like Marvin Lewis & I can’t stand the Bengals. I still remember the Jamarcus Russell who tore apart the SEC & Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl a few years back. The talent is definitely there, now he needs to grow up & wake up before it’s too late. I hope this kid gets a fresh start.

  84. Voyager6 says: May 11, 2010 10:12 PM

If Carson fails to move the ball in the air again this year, he is washed up.
    His faults:
    1) Worries constantly about getting hit. Gets happy feet and dumps ball off when no pressure. Unwilling to take a hit to make a big play.
    2) Locks onto Chad or primary receiver and never looks off the DBs. Very slow to move to check down to alternate receivers. Doesn’t find the open receiver, based on the defensive play unless the play called was perfect.
    3) Audibles to run plays only. Will not audible to a pass.
    4) Inaccurate passes put receivers in jeopardy of getting hurt. Eventually they quit trying for him.
    5) Run fake is below average. Does not freeze safeties.
    6) Accuracy degraded as season went along, causing speculation that previously torn and unrepaired elbow tendon was not fully healed. Worry it is still not healed. Watch for Carson to be on a pitch count in training count – if so, it will tell that coaches believe he can’t handle the load.
    In Carson’s defense:
    1) Bad play calling by OC. Team does not put WR in motion to help QB see what defense is and who is covering whom (and create coverage mismatches or coverage errors) by the DBs. Bengals put WR in motion to hit point of attack in running game. WR motion is a tip off that the play will be a run.
    2) Weak supporting cast; receivers had hands of stone last year and dropped a lot of passes. Carson lost confidense in most of the receivers last year.
    3) Busted thumb affected handoffs and run fakes.
    4) Specific personnel in game reveal play ahead of time (unbalanced line, Leonard or Scott in game on 3rd down run play, etc.).

On a more serious note, this is why it is a bad idea:
I’ll use Pacman Jones as a comparison.
Pacman had a little too much hubris going on and he was essentially taken down a peg or two. He realized that either a) he wanted to play in the NFL or b) he needed to play ($$) in the NFL – so he cleaned up his act and is now marching to the NFL beat.
    How do we know this? Because of all the little things he is saying/doing. The usual little ‘athlete-speak’ that guys who are marching to the beat say;
    “Just happy to be here”
“Working on being a part of the team”
    “Happy to get another shot”
    or reporters saying he
    “Looks fit in camp”
    “Covering well”
    blah blah blah
    What does it really mean?
“I’m hungry, I’ve leaned my lesson and gonna do what I have to – no more BS”
Jamarcus was handed $39 mil. by the Raiders.
When he was cut he said he was “…going home to rest” (you can insert whatever joke you want at this point – “Rest from…the buffet line? Craps table? Champagne room?”)
He didn’t say he was headed to work out in the gym or off to throw balls to WR’s at his old school or ANYTHING TO INDICATE HE STILL WANTED TO PLAY.
For whatever reason, if you read between the lines (without any nastiness or judgement here) Jamarcus doesn’t seem to want to play football. Plain and simple. Maybe he needs a year off away from the game to see if he is willing to dedicate himself, I dunno.
Bottom line is that guys in the locker room will look approvingly at a guy like Pacman made some mistakes but is working hard for his second shot – and will work with him.
Guys will not be so happy sitting next to the $39 million dollar man, who thinks he should get more than the league minimum and isn’t quite sure about how devoted to the game he is.

Great move if they bring him in. Black coach(you just don’t know how far this goes), stable offensive system, great QB to study under, high profile star in Ocho to take the heat off him. Next to no pressure to perform as anything other than a backup. This could end really well.
I’m gonna laugh at people when this cat winds up being a serviceable NFL player.

    @Biff Henderson
Don’t insult Waffle House by lumping them in with Russell.

Everyone getting all bent out of shape about the Bengals signing a third-string QB to replace Carson’s crappy little brother Jordan Palmer. As crappy as JaMarcus Russell is, I bet he’s better than Jordan Palmer. Might be better than the Bengals’ crappy No. 2 QB, JT O’Sullivan as well.
Nah, probably not. Bengals would probably sign Russell as the No. 3 QB if they sign him. But go ahead and behave as if this were big news.

Too bad, a few years ago I actually respected the Bengals. Not going to be a fun year for Bengal fans
Based on……… What? How horribly the experiment went last year? Yea, good logic. Beyond that, he didn’t sign, this is speculation from a guy that likes to have fun with his twitter account, nothing more, Cincy fan, quit freaking out, D-bags, who is it that you root for again? Unless it’s the Jets Colts Chargers Vikings Saints etc then keep your ugly pie holes shut, you have no room to talk.

I would have to see a major league change in Russell’s overall attitude regarding playing at a pro level before I’d sign him to anything more than working concessions. Still, he’d come cheap if the Bengals decided to take a chance. Maybe his failure in Oakland woke him up a bit. Maybe.
It seems ironic that Russell who accomplished as close to next-to-nothing over three seasons with the Raiders is already being looked at by any team. To do what?

There are meetings held every year for rookies to advise them on how to handle the money they will be getting pain and to continue prepare for life after pro-football. There are eduactional outlets within the NFL to help players with post-football employment and the like.
Ironic, isn’t it, that brand new Titan Myron Rolle sank so low in the draft just because he got a jump on preparing for his life after football. This guy accepts a Rhodes Scholarship(one of the most prestigious scholarships on the planet) to prepare for becoming a neuro-surgeon after his playing days are over. All of those teams who then began to question his commitment to the NFL as a player just because he put off entering the draft for one year. Does anyone understand the previous commitment to his education that landed him a Rhodes Scholarship? Or the commitment he will have to have in order to become a neuro-surgeon which involves among other things doing surgery on the brain itself? This guy was and is all about commitment and intellect which I have no doubt he will demonstrate well for the Titans. He is going to make a lot of those teams who passed on him for bettering/preparing himself for one year regret it big time.
Ted Bruschi stated on tv that if he had had the chance to be a Rhodes Scholar at the exspence of one year in the NFL he would have jumped at the opportunity. Tedy couldn’t understand how what Rolle did should have caused a problem regarding the draft.
Myron Rolle will also be a player who will never show up on a police blotter or in clubs putting the hit on college girls or shooting himself in the leg or juicing up.
I am a Giants fan to my blue core but this is one non-Giant player for whom I will be rooting for as long as he plays. He has class and a ton of commitment, and and the kind of positive image the NFL could sorely used right now.
So when I read that the Bengals are already looking, perhaps, at a loser like Russell it makes me want to gag. Here is a guy who can’t even spell commitment and didn’t like to study his playbook and was picked # 1 overall when he was drafted.
While Rolle paid the price via his draft number for taking advantage of a Rhodes Scholarship.
    What a world!
